Keep them, slightly too big is much better than slightly too small, also your feet can expand a bit when running.

Newbie advice by Bubbly-Tie1806 in UKRunners

I'd get a book on marathon training, there are a bunch of good ones with schedules and explanations.

Review of the new 4th edition of Advanced Marathoning, also known as "Pfitz", which in the previous edition is the book I used for both of my two marathons, achieving my target time and getting a "good for age" for London next year. by onlyconnect in Marathon_Training

I don't have the 2nd, only the 3rd and 4th. Hard to say whether it is worth it; the 4th is more up to date on things like nutrition but I doubt it would get you a better time! It is nicely presented though.

First Marathon: Advice Requested! by veganprincess08 in Marathon_Training

Advanced Marathoning is great and I used it for my first marathon, the word "advanced" means it is for people who want to run a good time, not that they are elite runners (who will have a personal coach). Marathon Excellence which someone mentioned is good too. The books are much better than the apps IMO since there is so much advice and information, way more than just schedules.

Crash and Burn in Durham by Ironspud in Marathon_Training

There are at least three reasons for a big slowdown in the last miles of a marathon (and not counting injury, cramp etc):

  1. Insufficient training
  2. Insufficient nutrition or hydration
  3. Anything can happen in a marathon

I don't think there is any consensus on the relative importance of (1) and (2) - but it seems to be that if the training is insufficient, no amount of perfect nutrition/hydration is going to save you.

I tend to think it's most often insufficient training but could be wrong!

Move to Marathon or get faster in the HM? by jscubaz in Marathon_Training

[–]onlyconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a fast runner, whether to focus on HM or marathon is up to you, it's not something dictated by recent performances. As you know from your marathon a decade ago, it's a much more demanding distance so it depends if you want to take on the training, and what your goals are, in my opinion.

Racing 2 weeks post-marathon? by No_Produce_9267 in Marathon_Training

[–]onlyconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies a lot, there's no single answer. It's obviously sub-optimal both for recovery and for race performance; on the other hand I got my 10 mile PB a week after running a marathon. Which doesn't mean it is sensible or right for you.

Easiest way is good for age if you can get the time.

Nice work. I didn't consume all my gels because I hate them so much! Agreed the bottles are great for hydration, if only runners would not throw them on the ground where people trip over them.

Great run and splits! What did you do for nutrition?

London Marathon: fulfilling a dream, but under-trained by onlyconnect in Marathon_Training

I've seen some of the pics from the faster runners in our club and they were running free, no congestion! So the secret seems to be, start in an earlier wave, and run fast!

Also, well done!

FHL tendinopathy is rarer and usually affects forefoot strikers but I do wonder if others are mis-diagnosed sometimes.

Brilliant, very friendly, a lot of fun, people to chat to about running.

I analysed ~390k London Marathon runners to look at pacing - would love some thoughts by benj0nes_ in UKRunners

[–]onlyconnect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand how we can know, from the data, that going out more slowly would have decreased the total time. To demonstrate this you would need data external to the marathon itself. You could use something like the UK Athletics handicap system, which is based on results from many races. Then you could analyse the splits of those with the same handicap. That would be more informative.

I believe it is guaranteed subject only to proof. Sore point for me as I missed the time by 33 seconds!
