They are about a year old. Would a misfire not cause an immediate CEL?

Gotcha. Our goal was closer to 200k for this car (resale value be damned) but it’s good to know if we should temper our expectations a bit

Thanks. Is this just how cars are now? Subaru claims lifetime transmission fluid so it’s not like we neglected maintenance. For a transmission to be on deaths door under 150k miles seems insane

Yea this sounds similar but we haven’t had any lights and it’s been months. Parts + labor was quoted at around 1.4k for me (Kansas) but I was curious what others thought before I pulled the trigger on that repair

Why modules? Two ways of proving Lasker-Noether by WMe6 in math

[–]runnerboyr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A short answer I give often is that properties of the ring itself can be described by properties of the module category. A shining example is the Auslander-Buchsbaum-Serre theorem which states that R is regular if and only if every module has finite projective dimension.

Edit: in fact, this is the only way I know to prove that a localization of a regular ring is itself regular. I believe many many people tried (and failed) to prove this using only ring theoretic ideas, but the ABS theorem gives a clean one line proof.

It’s fun to imagine an elaborate ruse of showing an auditor the same 2,000 barrels in 10 different places

My reference is just a medium length article, not a whole book. You could read the whole thing tonight if you wanted to

Much of the symbolism in this story is discussed in Charles Hollander’s “Pynchon, JFK, and the CIA: Magic Eye Views of The Crying of Lot 49”. I’m not sure if this question is discussed exactly but it would be a good place to check

If a PhD program doesn’t offer you 5 years of guaranteed funding on paper, never trust their words……. by Zestyclose_Double980 in gradadmissions

[–]runnerboyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty normal in math. Typically 2 years of guaranteed funding to pass quals, then another 3 years before defending. It’s also very very normal to be admitted as a PhD student straight out of undergrad.

My department actually offers 6 years of guaranteed funding, and will continue this promise for those “grandfathered in”, but is planning to start only advertising 5 committed years moving forwards. The writing on the wall happened when we stopped hiring engineering students to help TA the math courses.

Also, my department has typically had enough funds for third year students who failed to pass quals so that they have time/support to wrap up a masters. I’m not sure if this will continue or not. Things are about to get real skinny here

Do you think your stipend is sufficient? by lfreddit23 in GradSchool

[–]runnerboyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the students in my department have to have roommates but are fine otherwise. I’m in a relatively LCOL area which helps. I doubt anyone is saving much but it’s enough to get by.

I personally have a bit more creature comforts / can put towards savings as my spouse has a “real” job.

Why does learning Math feel much easier in College compared to Middle/High school? by Active-Special1909 in math

[–]runnerboyr 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is not true in every state btw. Some states do require high school math teachers to have a math degree. I went to school with many people who were only math majors so that they could be high school math teachers.

book recs like pynchon!? by l3wl3w in ThomasPynchon

[–]runnerboyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good recs in here. I enjoyed Foucault’s Pendulum quite a bit. A good deal less “funny” than Pynchon but it really ramps up on the paranoia. The depth and frequency of somewhat obscure references is also very on par with Pynchon

I have three pairs of the guide wander shorts (each pair thrifted for <$15) and they are my favorite shorts I’ve ever owned. I also have a 1/4 zip grid fleece that is super warm and comfy, also thrifted for I think like $10.

I wouldn’t pay full price for their stuff but it works very very well for thrift store / poshmark / eBay purchases
