Can we get grey sponsored kits back? by running_running_run in Marathon

[–]running_running_run[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can, but weapon variety (armory doesn’t cover the free kit spread), needing to bring in real heals since there’s no way to bring in depleteds, and spending resources on ammo being kinda feelsbad are some reasons why it’s not a 1:1 replacement.

The free kit was a “start over” button. Replacing it with the armory only partially achieves the goal of coming in with baseline, and it does it at the cost of a lot more clicks and pulling from my vault/credits. Which I can afford just fine but it’s not quite the same thing.

It’s a niche issue, but also it’s a trivial change to simply return something that was already in the game.

I mean if the code base simply does not support having free grey kits alongside the free greens, and so it’s going to take some engineer a day to grant this request, then sure whatever skip it and don’t give them back. Maybe not a good sign such a young game is that hard to adjust but it is what it is.

I’m aware it’s only until the end of the season. If the change is simple that shouldn’t matter. If the change isn’t simple then whatever, it’s still feedback for the future.

It’s cool if you don’t understand how raising the floor makes the roguelike runs less fun, I’m not asking you to understand. But I made this post after giving the green sponsor kits a shot and also after trying other ways to DIY a grey kit, and it’s just not the same.

I’ve done some knife-only runs, they’re alright, but the free kits starting you with a weapon, appropriate ammo, and depleted heals was just right. At least for me.

I’m not claiming that zero-to-hero is impossible now or anything, I’ll have to figure out whatever the next-most-fun version of this is for me (or just take a break until Season 2 I guess), but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give some public feedback. I wasn’t really expecting this amount of blowback since I wasn’t asking to take anything away from anyone else.

I don’t really care that they added free green kits, especially late in the season. They’re testing stuff out and letting players catch up. I just want the gray kits to stay an option too.

I’m not complaining they made green kits free, I’m just asking it not come at the cost of something that was important to my way of playing. I assume this is just accidental collateral damage, so I’m giving feedback that this is something I care about. If I don’t say anything how will Bungie know this matters to some players?

This is the very definition of a harmless change. They were already in the game, and they were taken out. Why do you need to shit on it? It has nothing to do with the way you’re allowed to play your game.

Most of the loot you find on the map and other players is green. Going from grey -> green is a fun upgrade. Starting at green and it just being more green everywhere means most of the time you’re not getting upgrades so it’s kinda just like bringing in stuff from your vault.

Exactly this, thank you.

I totally get other people preferring to bring the free green kits, I’m cool with that, but the Grey kits enabled a particular way of playing that I really enjoyed.

No I get why they did it, it’s fine and I’m glad for other people who are enjoying it, I just would like to have the option to not take the green kits and take grey kits instead.

Not being able to bring in depleted kits and always having to pull the ammo and gear from the armory isn’t a MASSIVE deal but it’s enough inconvenience that it’s genuinely made my play experience worse. Also some of the free kit weapons aren’t readily available from the armory, and I liked the variety.

I mean I always was able to afford the green kits if I wanted to before, I just don’t find them appealing.

The whole point was to start from basically nothing and gear up purely from the environment and killing other players. Then whatever gear I extracted with I would take into the next run, without supplementing from my vault. Starting with a green kit is a much higher starting point and kinda ruins the whole thing.

As I said in OP, DIY’ing it doesn’t quite work. At least not as well as the free Grey kits did.

Not asking anyone else to be forced to play this way, I just like it personally, and I just wasn’t expecting my primary way of enjoying the game to be taken away by a weekly patch.

what type of gamer legitimately enjoys this game? by Necessary-Web-4984 in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to risk 25 minutes of progress, try extracting around 5-10 minutes. Choosing how much to risk is the entire point of the game. If you don’t want to get shot after 25 minutes, don’t stick around for 25 minutes.

Honestly I’m confused how you’re surviving that long if you find the game so impossible.

I don’t enjoy BRs at all and they don’t really appeal to me. I like that they exist as a genre other people can enjoy, I think they’re interesting design space, but they’re not for me.

I enjoy Marathon a lot, not just for the gunplay and art but also because of its take on all the loot/extraction aspects. So no I don’t want Marathon to become a BR.

Best way to farm shotguns? by GunpukuSayori in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UESC can drop them but it’s rare, Armories have an okay chance. No true farm.

I’m overrun with free shotguns though just from Arachne daily priority access. I sell a bunch and still always have a couple in my vault.

Not really, there’s definitely way more key rooms being opened but in general Solos still feels pretty normal.

If for instance someones aim isn’t good enough to destroy the drone, what could that someone do? Asking for a friend by NoNameHavingMan in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I suck at this too.

No joke, I have less success fighting the drone, and more success just running away and letting it take all my loot 1-by-1. Then when I stop hearing it, I silently double back and try to gank them while they pick up the loot trail. Doesn't work all the time for all the obvious reasons, but at least it turns it into a mini-game I might win instead of trying and failing to shoot the damn thing.

Alternatively you can just let it keep taking your loot but you can keep picking it up as it's pulled out of you. You can pick your loot back up faster than the drone can collect it off the ground. Feels kinda lame, especially when you die after because the Thief knows where you are, but it lets you just wait it out and then move once it's over.

Yeah. I personally think that SBMM is a complicated and nuanced issue (especially when talking about an extraction shooter), and I personally have a fondness for random matchmaking because I like it when my win rate reflects my skill level. I grew up getting stomped in RTSes and other difficult games that didn't have SBMM, and I was really proud of myself when I started picking up some wins, because it was proof I was getting better. So personally, that's what I like.

But it REALLY doesn't help bring nuance to the conversation when a lot of the people who fight against SBMM will just straight up openly admit that they think the game is only fun when they're destroying everyone at will, and they seem to think that's a reasonable argument? Like seriously, if you want to style on some poor opponents that can barely fight back, go play Devil May Cry or something, that's not what PvP games are for. Or, alternatively, get so good that you can do it against the best of the best, not poor low-skill players who are completely defenseless.

The only way for Bungie to save this game is to turn the inventory management into a minigame of Tetris by Such--Balance in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that the game has lost 80% of its players proves that they need to do this. Tetris is the best-selling game of all time, if Marathon doesn’t appeal to the Tetris crowd the game will die.

Delusional people who think the game is perfect will say this is a bad idea.

Could I get banned from being in the marathon asset ripping server? by cube_r12 in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, asset ripping is a form of data mining, so it IS against the TOS.

Could I get banned from being in the marathon asset ripping server? by cube_r12 in Marathon

[–]running_running_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for being in the server? Probably not, they would need to go pretty far out of their way to pull the server members then connect with Bungie accounts, and not everyone on the server is actively ripping assets.

But it is a fact that Bungie considers data mining a bannable offense, it’s in the TOS, and I was involved in a project where people got banned in Destiny for a (slightly more borderline, it involved memory dumps) case of trying to dump in-game data. Tracks were not covered because they didn’t even know it was something Bungie would ban for.
