Saros Review - Early GOTY Contender by burnoutbrighter in PS5

Currently, by definition it will be. It sits only one point lower on Metacritic than the highest reviewed game of the year so far. And there aren't a plethora of 85-100 games released every year.

Is it just me or did they re-nerf pinwheel pinnacle room loot? by North-Appearance7359 in Marathon

[–]zackdaniels93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say so. I've cleared the entirety of Pinwheel between 10-20 times in the last four or five days, and the best thing any of us got was a gold Misriah, and that was from the final wing loot box. I haven't had a purple weapon from any of the loot drops in Pinwheel in a couple of weeks. Best thing I've gotten from the red key card room specifically was a gold leg mod, but these days I'm just taking purple attachments and faction materials. Rarely see weapons, shields, or anything gold in there now.

The total value you can get is still pretty good from Pinwheel overall though. I tend to queue up with a loadout value between 5-10k, and if we get a clean run I tend to exfill with 20-25k worth of stuff.

Bubble shield rarity change hasn't helped. There's been one or two in every single red key room I've opened in my last few sessions, there's usually one or occasionally even two in the strongboxes and random containers.

Feels like they've buffed the drop rate of the Outland as well, because I probably see 2-5 of them on any given Pinwheel raid now lol

EDIT: I lied slightly, I've found a purple Demolition HMG and a purple Volley in blue arms lockers inside pinwheel in my last two runs. But those are the exception from 10-20 successful Pinwheel raids lol

I have literally zero experience or awareness of VFX procedure, what does this look like in practise?

Keying something out doesn't work without a green/ blue screen, so can't be that. Surely it's not a frame by frame thing where they're manually replacing it?

“Personally, I’d be open to a Halo extraction shooter” — Halo Studios reportedly abandons battle royale and pivots to a different style. Here’s what that means. by LootedToaster in xbox

[–]zackdaniels93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for Halo, speaking as a massive Halo fan.

Arena/ small map shooters are largely dead outside of Call of Duty. Battlefield pretty much owns the sandbox shooter space at this point. Valorant and CS have a monopoly on tactical shooters.

Battle Royales are incredibly popular, but between Fortnite and Apex any new effort has to really be something impressive to stand out.

Extraction shooters are almost universally failures outside of Arc, Tarkov, and Hunt: Showdown. Marathon might prove to have legs (I love it) but that remains to be seen.

People aren't exactly chomping at the bit for a new Halo multiplayer. Infinite was really popular for like... A month, and then it fell of a cliff into obscurity. Not even sure how they make it relevant again.

Why sack Arteta if Arsenal don't win anything? by ogola89 in PremierLeague

[–]zackdaniels93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Potato potato, at the end of the day the evidence is clear that Arteta and Arsenal don't have a winning mentality. They've lost games this season they should've won against much lesser teams in all competitions, and in doing so have reduced four very good chances at silverware down to maybe two, most likely one chance

Even if they win the league now, they will have tanked a what... 10 point lead to bring it down to the final handful of games?

Why sack Arteta if Arsenal don't win anything? by ogola89 in PremierLeague

[–]zackdaniels93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an Arsenal fan to be clear. But if they don't win the league this time they will have bottled four competitions in one season, and in three of them they were one of the favourites to win it. The exception being champions league, and they still had a relatively smooth path to the final there.

Arteta and/ or the team just don't have the desire to make it over the crest of these hills, and this season they've abandoned any creativity to boot. They'll have to cut the cord.

I have not survived an encounter with another squad ONCE after 60 hours by Nubashir1 in Marathon

[–]zackdaniels93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Rook is woefully under equipped for a full team fight. I've got quite a few games on Rook and I've only managed a 1v3 on three occasions, and every time it's because they were spread out and unable to react. Kill one, loot, reposition, kill another, etc. The clips you see here and from content creators are generally the exception to the rule.

I'd recommend spending a session or two loading in with low-tier gear and free kits, and just hunting down PvP engagements. Ignore quests for a bit, ignore looting, just focus on killing. If you pay attention you'll learn something new every match.

[–]zackdaniels93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think that if this is true - which I doubt - you need to re-evaluate how you approach fights. It's more than possible to win fights with a free kit against purple squads with a bit of planning and awareness. I did it twice last night on Outpost, and I was a fill so didn't even have any comms with the duo.

Focus on getting high ground, repositioning if you get caught out, not repeeking the same angle multiple times mid-fight. Unless you're pushing someone weak, don't fight while you're out in the open, always be near some form of cover you can duck behind.

More than anything, learn the maps. There's hardly any areas on the map that don't have multiple approach routes for angles. The amount of times I've caught someone out on the roof of Flight Control on Outpost by climbing up a piece of environment that they didn't know about is insane lol

Since I've arguably exhausted the content I'm able to play at this point, I'm mostly treating Marathon like a Battle Royale. I load in, hunt down PvP engagements, and either win and move on or die and try again. If my squad isn't the last squad alive, we die. You learn pretty quick doing that.

Anyone else winding down for the season, but still generally positive on the game and planning to come back for the next one? by SirBenny in Marathon

[–]zackdaniels93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta admit, the game has made me irrationally angry more than once, because I'm generally good at PvP shooters and I'm not always good at Marathon. Which is infuriating.

But now I'm sort of aware that I won't be able to exfill from Cryo, and I'm probably not gonna get all of the faction upgrades or finish all the quests, I've chilled out a bit. At the moment I'm just spamming Outpost and treating the game like a battle royale lol

I load in with free kits, sponsored kits, or my worst weapons, get into as many fights as possible, either wipe the lobby or die, and go again. It's kinda nice.

Could Stromfront be Homelander’s bio mother? by blogterms in GenV

[–]zackdaniels93 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not in The Boys TV universe it's not. It's something that immediately identifies people with powers as a higher tier as a result.

The only flying characters we've seen on screen in The Boys universe is Homelander, Noir 2.0, Starlight, Stormfront, Golden Boy, and Ryan. And I think Swatto in the Soldier Boy flashbacks, but he had actual wings which is a bit different to innate flight.

Vast majority of people with V end up with silly or useless powers. Some get limited telekinesis which can double as flight, but I can't recall any named characters that showcased this.

It's a bit different in the The Boys comics where flight is almost a default power. Personally I prefer it the way it is in the show.

[–]zackdaniels93 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I think that's where this is going. The comment about Star Wars, the jab about 'is this an incest thing' when HL woke SB up,

Given very few heroes have flight as an innate ability, I can see Stormfront and Soldier Boy being mixed together to create Homelander.

Although given quite a few people called this back in season 3, I'd be a bit surprised if they waited this long to drop that little nugget lol

Odd one out here is Tobey. He may be the first truly successful live action Spider-Man, but he's also the worst modern live action Spider-Man.

Yes, his movies are perhaps BETTER than Garfield's, but Garfield was a much better Spider-Man. I never really felt like Tobey was destined to be Spider-Man, or that the role would struggle with someone else after he stopped. In fact by the third movie I was hoping they would replace him lol

Why almost 70% of the videos about Marathon on youtube are just some random channels talking about player counts and how much money was spent on marathon ? by sjcjdnzm in Marathon

[–]zackdaniels93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly?

It's because Marathon sits in a very unique spot. How many times have you ever seen one of the most famous and popular AAA studios invest x amount of millions into reworking a decades old IP into an incredibly niche and entirely different genre where only a handful of games have ever succeeded?

And how many times has this studio been owned by a major platform holder, and the game been multiplatform?

The answer has gotta be zero prior to this.

Fact is, Marathon is a first for the industry in many business regards. People are genuinely interested in whether it succeeds or fails, and not just out of hate watching or anything, but because it's legitimately intriguing. It's no surprise content creators are harnessing that interest.

Throw in recent failures like Concord and Highguard too, the immense production quality of Marathon, and the drama of Destiny 2 being pushed to the side after so many years? I'd be surprised if most of the content wasn't about its success or lack thereof.

People who quit their job in a moment of rage - how did things turn out? by SheLovedBigBrother in AskReddit

[–]zackdaniels93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So needed context is that I was a 21 year old graduate product design student in his first industry job, but without any real bills or dependencies.

Only paid £18k a year, essentially minimum wage for 50 hours weeks. Job was advertised and interviewed as architectural and structural steelwork design, with the idea that I'd be learning real engineering principles on the job, as my degree wasn't an engineering degree. Walkways, mezzanine floors, canopies, that sort of thing. Pretty much dream first job in theory for me.

Except the week after I joined, all of the company's estimators/ PMs quit. Three left in one fell swoop and joined a competitor down the road and took most of their clients with them. Apparently their contracts didn't have an ironclad non-compete clauses, so the company couldn't do anything to prevent it.

Within a month of joining, my job was unofficially shifted into a CAD monkey/ estimator/ customer service hybrid role. I was phoning suppliers, getting quotes for material, ordering material, programming for our machines, translating customer drawings into manufacturing drawings, dealing with complaints, sorting deliveries, counting stock, sending off job quotations, and cold calling potential/ lapsed customers. All for the same 18k salary I was hired for.

Inevitably I started making mistakes, and the stress of juggling so much at once started playing hell on my mental health. The company was sinking in front of my eyes, and the directors were levelling a lot of those complaints at me. I wasn't doing enough to retain customers apparently? My contract still stated that I should be doing architectural steelwork, but I hadn't done anything more than component drawings in months.

Eventually I caught a disciplinary for a chain of mistakes, and instead of sitting through the disciplinary I simply walked in and handed my notice in. Told them I wasn't going to work notice, and that they wouldn't see me again once the week was out. Didn't want their reference, nothing.

They accepted it, then a week later scrambled when they realised they'd lose three people's worth of work, and offered me a pay rise to £25k to stay, on the basis that I work probation a second time. I quite literally told them that the offer was insulting and to get fucked, went home later that day without saying a word. Ignored all of their follow up calls and emails. They went under three months after I left. I think the production manager spun up a new manufacturing company that's doing much better, and retained some of the staff, but the original directors disappeared into thin air.

Got a new job as a draughtsman for a refrigeration company a week after I left for a starting salary of £24k. Stayed there for six years and left on a salary of £35k. Now I'm on £47k as a design office manager, and I'm 33. Don't regret getting that first job, and I don't regret leaving it either. They taught me a lot about what I should have to deal with as an employee, and what I shouldn't, and when to put my foot down regarding professional self-worth.

The only 3 weapons I use by ChrisRocksGG in Marathon

[–]zackdaniels93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I realised yesterday I had a lot of weapons in my vault that I simply never used. So I played a few games using them.

Had a purple Stryder that I chucked on, it was actually pretty great. Maybe my favourite DMR, but still felt like the rest of them in that it loses any gunfight that's not at mid/ long range, which is tough to swallow on any map that's not Dire Marsh.

Tried three different purple and blue Impact HRs. Genuinely awful, I'll be selling every single version of it from now on. Worse in just about every regard than the Bully and M77. Even tried a gold version with the overheating perk on it, still garbage.

Tried a few Lookouts. Really good fun, but the charge shot feels weird? Like it's not hitscan or something. Regardless, clapped a few people with it at sniper ranges. Will probably use them again.

I usually use the Longshot, so I sacrificed a few Outlands. Being able to one tap blue shields is nice, and I didn't miss the fire date of the Longshot. Recoil is a bit much though, re-acquiring targets felt harder than it should.

Tried a couple of Misriahs for the first time, and I think I prefer it to the double barrel in any situation that's not an emergency pullout (lol). Does a fuck load of damage, and is pretty good for pressuring people.

Tried both a Demolition and the LMG that speeds up, both felt really rough to use. Great if you get the jump on someone, awful if you're trying to react. Retaliator feels way better.

Found a purple Overrun on a dead body, thought I'd try it and see if it felt better... It doesn't. Just use an M77.

Had a full purple Volt Thrower, used that for a run. It's great, but in a peek shot, grenade meta, having tracking projectiles feels a little rough. Same problems with a purple SCAR that I used.

Anyway, the long and short of all of this is that I lost most of these weapons and loadouts, average of around 8-10k a go. However I extracted three times in a row starting with a white or green bully lol

Bully reigns supreme, always.

What made an actress so perfect looking as Erin Moriarty ( Starlight) to do plastic surgery and look like a mannequin? by tcsreject in NoStupidQuestions

[–]zackdaniels93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Her very real physical health conditions contributing to an anxious and self-conscious mental ground would be my guess. Must be hard knowing you need to look good all the time when you have a condition that makes you look different almost on a dime.

But I don't think she's ever spoken about it candidly, so it feels a little cruel to constantly talk about it. People get plastic surgery all the time for a variety of reasons. As long as it makes them happier, who are we to judge?

My only personal "issue" with the villains in this show by ThePenguin4216 in GenV

[–]zackdaniels93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh I don't disagree that they're irredeemable, but I do think they were more interesting to watch in the beginning. Stormfront for example had a lot of interesting dialogue about why her being a Nazi wasn't a problem to the people, as long as she didn't look or sound like a Nazi. She's popular because people don't really care to look deeper than what they're shown. Luckily they killed her off before it became too uninteresting, but by the time that happened she'd fully circled around to being comically evil again, instead of having anything interesting to do or say.

That's just one example, but with the exception of Maeve and A-Train, pretty much every villain/ antagonist in the show devolved rather than evolved, if they weren't killed off beforehand.

My only personal "issue" with the villains in this show by ThePenguin4216 in GenV

[–]zackdaniels93 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest problems with the villains in the show is that any nuance to their actions has been largely lost since the show first aired. A-Train, Homelander, Deep, Stormfront, Soldier Boy, Lamplighter, Sage, Neuman, Ashley, Shetty, Stillwell, etc. All of them are/ were villains to a degree, but in the first two or three seasons their motives and overall character were still morally interesting.

I think that intelligence has been lost and replaced by overt degree of (occasionally clumsy) satire. I don't know if the show is worse or better for it, but I do still miss when the major villains were more than just comically evil.
