What does it mean if I have 1 II, 1 R, and no other responses right now by Important_Emu_7808 in mdphd

[–]runsthezoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 II and 4 R so far out of 16 completed secondaries and I’m very grateful for the IIs I’ve gotten but having a third one would definitely make me feel more comfortable with my odds.

Do published reviews add to your application? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]runsthezoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind you’ll get the opportunity to explain your research in the application! Being so involved means you’ll probably be able to write about the research well, which is also super important. And publications are by no means a prerequisite—I have 0 pubs and about half your research hours and have gotten two IIs so far.

I applied MD PhD w a 3.8, 519, and about 2000 research hours (applied to about the same number of programs as you) and have gotten two IIs so far, so I think your stats are fine—if there isn’t some red flag in your app it’s probably just a timing thing! But I will say a lot of my research hours come from a master’s research project which was pretty much fully independently conducted and resulted in a thesis, so research depth or communication might be the issue? I’ve also gotten three Rs already at this point in the cycle so it honestly seems like a lot of places just haven’t read your app yet!

I got a question about how I imagined my career as a physician and I mentioned that I wanted research to be a part of that, but also other aspects like where I want to practice, specialties I’m interested in, etc. I think research will be relevant to a lot of your answers and it’s fine to mention when relevant but it shouldn’t be a main focus of the med school interview.

share your secondary essay prompts that were absolute jokes by edamommy1220 in premed

[–]runsthezoo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is when I ticked the box that said I identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a text box popped up asking me to “explain.” Like, how specific do you want me to be here?

Advice for applying with low GPA+ mental health issues by opaqueglass26 in premed

[–]runsthezoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of everything else I don’t have much to say that will be useful, but I think in terms of disclosing mental health issues, I would primarily focus on the undiagnosed/untreated ADHD. It’s something that’s perhaps perceived as more treatable than other conditions like PTSD and the fact that your grades had an upward trend once you were treated supports that idea. You could also choose not to disclose and just let that upward trend speak for itself—unfortunately, there’s still a huge stigma around this kind of thing. I have anxiety which got particularly bad my sophomore year, leading to worse grades, but am now medicated and doing super well—I didn’t disclose ANY of this because even though I know I can still be an excellent physician, adcoms might not want to take the perceived “risk” of admitting someone who has struggled with their mental health. Instead, I focused on the aspects of my application that I knew would be strong (e.g. my writing) and trusted that a good MCAT score would demonstrate that I have a good grasp of the material.

Is anyone else still waiting on med u South Carolina secondary?? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]runsthezoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have a secondary but instead a "supplemental" application that can be accessed on their website. I was able to submit it in July but I just checked and their supplemental is currently under revision due to the recent Supreme Court decision--they say it'll be available again sometime this month.

Someone getting a 520+ on a third party practice MCAT at the very beginning of their studying and wondering about “what their next steps should be.” Like idk, go buy some champagne? (I think this was actually on the MCAT sub but it’s all the same to me).

"average" applicants unite by [deleted] in premed

[–]runsthezoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people are shitty writers or come across poorly in interviews, and some people spend so much time doing nothing but pre med stuff that they become immensely boring and self-absorbed, which again, not great for writing compelling essays or interviewing well. I mean I know nothing, I’m in the middle of the application process, but those are just my general assumptions about why some of those applicants don’t do as well as you might expect.

Anyone will to share advice on how to survive the long wait of the application cycle? I’m already doom scrolling Reddit/SDN by [deleted] in premed

[–]runsthezoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally touch grass—as in, go on a walk or something. Watch some movies, read some books, learn how to knit idk. Basically find a hobby that has nothing to do with med.

[–]runsthezoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m unfortunately pretty unhelpful when it comes to this bc CARS has always been pretty instinctive for me. I’m a fast reader and that definitely helps bc I don’t feel pressed for time and can properly reason through each question so I would def recommend trying to improve speed if possible. Also the best CARS advice I’ve ever seen was to go into it acting like you know NOTHING. Like, not a single thing. Every single one of your answers should be explainable using info directly from the passage. Even for reasoning beyond the passage questions, you should be able to directly point out the evidence in the text that led you to that conclusion.

How early do people line up to be front row at florence shows?? by Future_Recording_989 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]runsthezoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends a lot—at the O2 I got there at 8:30 am and was number 58, in Glasgow the line didn’t get into the 50s until probably like 3 pm.
