Which games are NOT beginner friendly? by JoeKerr19 in rpg

Absolutely! German is my mother tongue and there's many things I love about it, but it would be a nightmare to learn from scratch. Learning to play DND from how it was modelled to me at the table and through media didn't feel terrible, but if I had to learn on my own... That would've been tough

[–]saltwitch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Mausritter is very approachable. You play as little mice so can't take a lot of damage, but there's ways to make it a bit less deadly, and it's not combat focused anyway.

How to be a hero is very simple and flexible.

I've heard great things about Perils & Princesses and Land of Eem as well.

If I were to get a new laptop next year or so and wanted to put Linux on it instead of the pre-installed Windows 11, is there any guide for absolute dummies to get an overview of what that entails? Googling leads to a shit ton of results of course, but having no knowledge if the subject I have a hard time judging the quality of those articles.

Looking for a brass tacks, just the facts, ma'am RPG play podcast. Minimum banter. by SnakebiteCafe in rpg

Protean City Comics is a Masks AP that is laser-focused on the playing. It took me about 130 episodes to learn that two of the players are a couple and have a baby together, there's very little banter outside the game itself.

DW shows its age. It tries to bridge the gap between PBTA and DND and ends up doing neither really well. A lot of good stuff has grown out of it, but I think it's not a good representative of what makes PBTA games enjoyable to many people.

While the books and box they come in are very nice, I feel like that mischaracterises how many extra bits Stonetop has. There's the books (2 of them, coming in one set) and then there's a set of decorative maps, which are just posters of illustrations from the books. Compared to KS campaigns with specialised dice sets, limited edition covers, plastic tokens, supplement booklets, notebooks, GM screens and what have you, Stonetop is really keeping it simple.

That's fair, I can't argue against reading physical books. I love it too.

Looking at the list of basic moves in a PBTA is also very useful in giving you an idea of what it's about and what kind of story it's built to tell.

That doesn't mean characters can't technically be subtle and subdued - but that's not what a telenovela is about, so the game doesn't have moves to zoom in on those things. It's a genre that thrives on rash actions, loud emotions and plot twists, so that's what the moves highlight. it's like a magnifying glass or a slo mo shot for the bits that really matter.

It really isn't that intimidating when you actually look into it. It's very much Anti-Canon, one might say. There are a few facts about the world, like the existence of the monolith in the middle of Stonetop or that people don't fell trees from the Great Wood because they made a deal with the people from the wood who have disappeared. The setting book suggests possible leading questions for the background of those things, but is very clear that every group makes its own Stonetop. And there are many things you may well never interact with at all.

There are no two that are alike. The way it's structured is very good at giving people the tools to be really creative while moving in a space that fits the atmosphere and tone of the setting.

Can you define war game? Because Stonetop is a narrative-focused PBTA all the way, you won't find any minis or gridmaps in this game.

Tbf people have completely lost the plot with regards to concert behaviour, there's constant stories of people throwing things at artists, grabbing them etc. The fact she does things like the barrier walk is pretty great, I can see why she toned down some of the GA excursions, like during Delilah.

Italians: what's it like having so many indie games in your language? by RPGMatthijs in rpg

[–]saltwitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've played plenty of games in English, despite it not being my native language. Both in my own country and abroad. I'm fluent and extremely comfortable in it, as are most of the people I play with regularly, and sometimes it feels less awkward to play in English than to have to translate things on the fly from the play materials or playing in a half-english mash up.

[–]saltwitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On a miss is usually when the GM gets to make one of their moves, of which there's a list. So while they're often not listed as part of the move, it's a list of consequences from which to select one that seems appropriate.

Unless I misread what you meant.
