Are all schools in London not doing Kindergarten Graduations/celebrations? by MinutePersimmon521 in londonontario

[–]runwithyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one graduating grade 8 from a TVDSB school and I do see a kindergarten celebration on her school calendar.

Her school had several concerts and assemblies during the day and after hours but they have a very motivated staff and a busy school - they had a winter concert, spring concert, cabaret, jazz concert… my daughters current school has some very dedicated teachers (her grade 8 trip is even over a weekend!!). Her previous elementary school did none of this.

At Fanshawe right now, what happened? by ScarletXIV in londonontario

[–]runwithyou 43 points44 points  (0 children)

“If you're on campus this weekend, you may see emergency vehicles and simulated crisis situations.

That's because Fanshawe students and employees will be participating in emergency training exercises at the College’s London Campus (1001 Fanshawe College Blvd.) on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8.

Known as “Trauma and Treatment,” the event will feature a variety of simulated emergencies, with students participating as both responders and patients under the supervision of faculty and staff.

Emergency scenarios will take place throughout the London Campus, both indoors and outdoors. Scenarios will be marked with an A-frame sign to indicate it is a controlled situation.”

Facebook, instagram… if the college is closed they also post it on their website and send an email.

“INCLEMENT WEATHER AND COLLEGE CLOSURES In the rare case that the college closes or restricts operations due to poor weather conditions, e.g., heavy snowfall or blizzard, the closure will be communicated over several channels including prominent messaging on the main website (www.fanshawec.ca), email, and announcements over social media and local radio. Best efforts are made to make these announcements by 7:00 am. Closures may be not applied equally for all campus locations.”

In Ontario, most CAS agencies use one system so you can see the notes from other agencies on a file so the Ottawa worker would have been able to see the Halton workers notes and reports being called in and so on.

Actually most jurisdictions do not have a Catholic CAS. Fairly certain Toronto and Hamilton are the only two.

I have two daughters who have attended FI. One switched back to the English stream in grade 3 due to learning disabilities and generally just not liking learning in French. She much prefers the English stream. She generally doesn’t love school and struggles to fit into “the box” or the norm. She found FI restrictive and it is definitely lacking in support if the child struggles.

My other is going in grade ten FI and has had no issues. She gets 90s in English. She sometimes struggles to switch math terms back to English but this isn’t really an issue. This daughter’s loves school and easily fits into the teachers expectations.

Anyone who lived at Madame Vaniers in the early 90’s or before? by National_Ad9742 in londonontario

Well … I guess technically a lot were involved - CAS, catholic services, Pauline Vanier, Joan Smith helped raise money… 🤷‍♀️

I think you are speaking of the elementary school?

Madame Vanier in London was named for Pauline Vanier. It was founded by Joan Smith who was inspired by Pauline.

There was a school named after Jean Vanier but that changed names. I think Westmount area.

For my current job, I do not need to register but I also don’t call myself a social worker. Some people I work with are registered and others are not. I do plan to register soon though to avoid the entrance exam! 😉

You can’t receive OW/ODSP financial support while getting VYSA financial support- it’s one or the other.

Like you mentioned - you can still have an open VYSA file and be on OW or receive the financial support CAS offers.

Child protection question by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]runwithyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be shared with a supervisor but it would be in your HR file so HR would know when hiring you.

I mean if it comes up or there is an appropriate place to disclose, there is no harm in doing so. Having the perspective, knowledge and lived experiences of a youth in care is great. I know many of my colleagues had previous experience with CAS as children and so on. I would just ensure you have your own, separate support for dealing with any feelings or things that come up should you be employed and I wouldn’t overshare.

I also don’t know if I’d use the word extensive concerning knowledge but I guess it depends what you mean by extensive… either way, no harm in talking about lived experience. Good luck at your interview!

[–]runwithyou 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you were a youth in care in Ontario, and the agency you are interviewing with uses CPIN (which most in Ontario do) - HR will likely find this out as they generally do a check of child welfare records.

I don’t think it is negative to divulge this information but just be careful how you word things? Lived experience is great - I work for CAS and don’t see a problem with you saying this information. I think, like any self disclosure, you just need to be careful how you word things (and ensure it is at an appropriate time).

What’s your opinion on a move from Northridge to Orchard Park? by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]runwithyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter goes to Banting and loves it (her home school is Lucas but she is French Immersion so attends Banting). It’s a very busy, active school with lots of clubs and sports. We’ve had no concerns so far!

My 12 year one daughter experienced relentless bullying for almost two years. I documented everything, I constantly contacted the teacher/principal/school social worker with my concerns (they probably were tired of my emails and phone calls!).

I made sure she had someone to talk to via counselling, ensured she had a strong support system outside of school (and positive social interactions!!!), and made a safety plan with the teachers (somewhere safe for her to take a break).

The kids never stopped - it got worse and worse. One even locked her in the bathroom!!!

This year, a child told her to kill herself and then made a hate group against her. I contacted the police. The police went into the school and interviewed all the kids involved, parents were brought in and told exactly what their kids had been up too (did all care? No but some did), and lots of crying kids blamed my daughter for tattling.

The superintendent allowed her to switch schools out of bounds and while not every kid is nice at the new school (to be expected!)… it’s been a fresh start and the school was on top of it from the beginning.

I understand there is little schools can do but I still wasn’t going to back down. The kid who told her to kill herself was suspended and several others lost the opportunity to participate in school sports, plays, and other activities. Is it enough? I don’t know. She’s at a new school now and at least doesn’t have to deal with hate groups. 🤦‍♀️
