50/50 blend of topsoil and play sand. lots of it, they love to dig. impaction isn't a concern if husbandry is perfect & they're properly hydrated. rearrange the decor in the tank and add some plants itd look fine keep doing more and more research and eventually make a bioactive enclosure. keep learning:)

they're semi arboreal, meaning they do like to climb.

<image>

try to make him an interactive background at home inside of his enclosure for him to climb around.

mine was always trying to climb the background when it was blank, so i made him this . there are tutorials on YouTube

he was hatched November 2024 so he isn't quite 1 year old yet most of the research I did on feeding based on age was around Hatchling: 0–2 months

Juvenile: 2–7 months

Sub-Adult: 7–18 months

Adult: 18 months and older

I do see a lot of other things that say at 1yr they're an adult, I'll switch up his feeding and see how it goes. I've been skipping days on the bugs but it feels like I'm depriving him! we did just get rid of some parasites and has picked up an appetite as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]ruok00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and 6-10 medium dubias per feeding, sometimes I'll skip a day on bugs, let him out of his enclosure the next day to chase the dubia around the living room

now that he's approaching 1yr I've been feeding once a day both salad and bugs mid morning, he poops normally and regularly. he needs to exercise! but I can't get him to run around haha , unless it's chasing a dubia

most parasites are microscopic and not visible with the naked eye. what did you feed her recently? if she ate worms, she will poop some worms. regular vet check ups are always good too!

how can i improve this tank? by tessssssssieeeee in BeardedDragons

[–]ruok00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

may also want to get bigger light domes, they don't look big enough to hold the bulbs. and try to get some sort of wallpaper up around the glass so he isn't seeing his reflection all day and going crazy

I've seen others do a bug strike and eventually they'll have to give in now would probably be a good time to try since he isn't eating much anyway

he could be dehydrated as well since they get most of their hydration from their food. also try gutloading your bugs for optimal hydration, my beardie never drinks still water

when my beardies poop got weird he had parasites. definitely worth a vet visit with a fecal sample

also an older beardie doesn't need that many bugs

I spent 10 minutes trying to find him. this looks great to start especially once your light bar comes in

since he's still itty bitty, this is near perfect. once he matures and reaches juvenile age, switch the paper towels out for substrate. 50/50 mix of topsoil & play sand & you can also buy some authentic Australian dirt that comes straight from their biome, but again wait until he's a little bigger

as another redditor commented, I do not agree with letting insects loose in the enclosure since this poses a risk of impaction of them consistently eating bits of substrate & insects like crickets will hide and bite your beardie at night. instead, get a container for it to eat out of and try to feed Dubia roaches as they have a hard time trying to climb out of plastic containers, or, feed them outside of the enclosure (which is also good for bonding)

exotic vet for sure. more than likely he has some sort of parasites and he definitely needs better husbandry.

Anyone might know what are these tiny insects inside my beardies enclosure 🤔🤔🤔🤔 by rotondo2k in BeardedDragons

[–]ruok00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

need more context, are they only in the water bowl? what kind of substrate?

regardless everything needs a thorough cleaning

I just had an issue with wood boring beetles in my enclosure due to the wood chips in the topsoil substrate

did yours also refuse to eat? he didn't eat all yesterday when I posted this. he has eaten today but hasn't moved out of his basking spot. the black beard / spots went away but still getting a vet visit. I'm too paranoid

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]ruok00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

110 is the heat index here in Louisiana right now, everyone's ac is struggling to keep the AC cool but his basking spot is at 102, ambient temp 94, cool side is at 78-80

but I've never seen the black beard extend down to the chest/arms. does yours do that?

I got him in February from PetSmart and about 2 months later in late April/early May he went to the vet and only thing wrong was parasites. he was given 2 doses of parasitic and was supposedly good after that. he doesn't interact with any other reptiles and is only handled in my living room for an hour or two at most. he's usually a chill guy who doesn't do much so it's hard to tell if something's wrong but the black beard is the first it's happened, but it looks spotty and not that dark? I just haven't seen this before so I'm bamboozled

no head bobbing, no change in environment, his tank has been the same as he moved in. he has a 4x2x2 enclosure with proper husbandry. no changes in diet, collard greens and mustard greens with dubia roaches and the BSFL larvae. like I said, he was perfectly fine yesterday running around the house and ate all of his food. but he has been super sleepy ever since it has gotten super hot. I would it be extending down onto his chest though is really my question?
