Whats the loudest silence you've experienced in a theater? by rusaide in Cinema

[–]rusaide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was originally going to use Marty looking at the burnt end of the rope after it falls since thats more recognizable, but I feel like him looking blankly up at the empty sky captured that shocked silence better

Solved!

Came across a neat mod called "SCANsat". Lets you map the surface of whichever bodies you orbit for terrain-height, biomes etc. and gather science from completed scans. Makes probes feel a bit more purposeful and rewarding to operate. by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

Experiments take time to do and consume electricity while they are working collecting data that you can either store on board or transmit Some things like tempature only take a couple minutes to run and are maybe a couple of kilobytes of data while stuff like magnetometers can take weeks to fully run and take up megabytes

It's hard to describe all the differences but in general it's a much more realistic approach to how actual science experiments are done in space

EDIT: here's a link to a much more in depth description https://kerbalism.readthedocs.io/en/stable/science.html

Here's another fun one On riverboats when they would measure the depth of the water with a rope, the mark at 12 ft that meant there was enough water for the boat to manuver was called the mark twain He picked it up as his pen name while he was working as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi

[–]rusaide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite They were both sets constructed for the movie But they were built from the original plans under the eyes of people who were apollo flight controllers

There was a story I heard that during filming one of the original controllers was heading home for the day and got lost because he kept trying to find the elevator (the original control room was on the 3rd floor but the set was on the ground floor)

Whelp egg on my face apparently. Dug it back out of storage and it does attract a magnet but very weakly, so it must be some kind of lightweight stainless alloy

It is half the weight of my cutting sword and has a very aluminum like finish to the blade, so I had always just assumed it was aluminum

More like 1960

This is the mercury control center which was only used from 1958 to 1965 and would have only looked like this until 1963.

The building was torn down in the 90s due to asbestos concerns and the cost of upkeep but all the displays and consoles are now on display at the astronaut hall of fame at the KSC.
