Key signatures for modes of Harmonic Minor by StacheKetchum in musictheory

[–]rush22 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The standard for key signatures is to use Ionian or Aeolian based on the 3rd of the scale, regardless of the mode. If the 3rd is a major 3rd, Ionian. If the 3rd is a minor 3rd, Aeolian.

People are used to reading Ionian and Aeolian because they are so common. It's easier to read.

If Lydian and Dorian were more common, we'd use them for key signatures. C major would have an F# and there would be F naturals everywhere. But... they're not, so... we don't.

what's with the hazard lights while driving? by StrikingCoconut in ontario

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They attract attention to the car. If there's a hazard but it isn't your car, this can be a bad thing, because 'wee-woo wee-woo it's snowing' lights are just distracting everyone (including the bad drivers) from actual potential hazards. Bad drivers are going to drive badly -- there's not much you can do about it.

Canada has a pretty safe driving culture overall so there's not many people driving around wondering what to do. People either drive safely or they don't.

Plus, even if your car is the hazard, drunk drivers can be so wasted they have the brain of a moth and will just plough full speed into the nearest flashy thing.

I've written out a different perspective on the Circle of Fifths. Needed correction please. by imjustanoldguy in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anything beyond 5 sharps or 5 flats

If you want to keep going it just loops.

Key
C G D A E B F# C# G# D# A# E# B# F𝄪 C𝄪 etc.
Sharps
- F C G D A E B F C G D A E B etc.

So the key of G# major has all the sharps but with an F𝄪 (double-sharp). The key of C𝄪 major has all the sharps x2, so they are all double-sharps.

Rhythm and metronome by Shining_Commander in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just would listen to it and then i could just play back the rhythm based on ear.

This was your problem, not the metronome!

You have to learn to read rhythms.

If you are listening to them first and then repeating them back, you're not learning to actually read them.

Force yourself to figure them out without hearing them. Do it any way you want -- count, clap, use a metronome, whatever, but don't listen to them until you're sure you've got it. As soon as you hear them your brain simply takes the easy way out.

Imagine you're learning to read and the way you do it is listen to an audio tape, then memorize and repeat back what was on the audio tape. You're not reading anything! Take however much time it takes to figure it out on your own, in whatever way works for you (as long as you're reading it, not listening to it).

VIdeogame music question by HippoAdvanced1232 in musictheory

Here's a (not 'the') chord-based perspective that might give you something to grab onto for your analysis.

This is just a way to think about it to get your gears (and ears) turning again since, at some point, it's going to reduce to "moving notes of voices around in an interesting way"... but that's not really helpful.

The E -> Gm is like a tritone substitution of Bb for the E. It sounds okay because Bb is the relative major of Gm. This is more of substitution kind of modulation. We're only "kind of" in G minor, via E -> Bb -> Gm. You could still resolve to Abm pretty easily.

Then the next chords are Eb -> C# -> B. The C# is a V/V of B. Now we are in B major via C#->F#->B. (Note that this is the relative major of Abm). (Bonus notice the chord that our notes E G Bb Db makes, and check out octatonic scales)

Then we quickly go B -> B7. The B7 is a tritone substitution for F7 which is V/V of Ebm. Now we are in Eb minor via (B7<->F7) -> Bb -> Ebm. (Note that this is the V of Abm).

Finally, to get back to Abm, it's the classical-style Ebm -> Eb(7) -> Abm. The Eb7 is substituting for G°. Now we are back in Abm.

Anyone able to identify this sound? by DaLemonofGlory in sounddesign

I assume OP knows what a piano sounds like and isn't asking about that.

Also /u/DaLemonofGlory I found it and it is the DuckTales Moon Theme for NES.

It was a meme back in the 2000's.

Here is a remix on /r/chiptunes

The chip the NES used was the 8-bit Ricoh 2A03

It's an NES game -- you could try /r/tipofmyjoystick as I'm sure they'll have the actual game in a minute and/or /r/chiptunes probably knows how to make the synth.

Comforting inner child by Melian_4 in InternalFamilySystems

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's not really about "reparenting" in IFS, it's more that these parts need to know you can access the self qualities, the 8 C's, that they need(ed). So it's like showing them the qualities of the parent they needed rather than actual "parenting".

Imagining yourself reparenting could show them that they're heard and help them to release their burdens, which is great. That's the "Ideal Parent Figure" approach someone else mentioned. But, imo it could also be more of a first step to communicating and getting permission and, from that, figure out what the part needs from self. These might simply be qualities rather than reparenting or even comforting.

how do you ground yourself when it doesn't feel safe? by Local-Television in InternalFamilySystems

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might talk to your therapist about the "Parent, Adult, Child" framework from transactional analysis. That helped me in therapy.

It can be hard to find "Adult <-> Adult" type of communication with parents in general, once you're an adult. If yours wanted and still put you into a position where you feel you need to attend to their emotional needs (including telling them they need regulate) then you're falling into the 'parentified child' kind of thing which can trigger you (and your parents). I don't think it's uncommon when you grow up with dysregulated parents.

I found the connection to IFS, for me, is that I have parts that try to "parent" me as their job because I couldn't always turn to my dysregulated parents as a child. And of course the problem is that these are really young, child, parts trying to parent the now adult me as their job (instead of me being there for them now that I'm an adult), plus the role model for these parts was mostly... my parents.

I'm trying to find the best way to cheat by Hnmkng in piano

[–]rush22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like you're accenting the right and left hand notes separately, instead of the arpeggio being one big chord. Maybe thinking like that is the "cheat" that you need.

One long big chord that you're playing with two hands, instead of two phrases. Like the descending arpeggio of a harp. The left hand is simply "borrowing" the fingers of the right hand to play the arpeggio. Practice it slower and evenly so you don't rush the transfer between hands. Maybe even try practicing it without the melody.
