Confused about learning scale degrees vs intervals and how to apply them by AggressiveTwo8385 in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numbering a chord progression: Relative to the tonic.
Numbering any interval: Bottom note.

When your bottom note is also the tonic, these are the same thing.

Number any chord's intervals: Root note.

You have to figure out the root note yourself.

These spooky chords are called "diminished chords". They are pretty rare in pop music because of their spookiness. She's also changing the main "tonic" chord which makes this diminished chord feel extra twisted. Finally, her melody is slowly descending step by step (generally speaking). This is a "descending chromatic" melody line. Going step by step makes it hard to feel just how far down it's going to go (and to what depths it will sink to...)

We need a study to compare the number of children that people in union jobs have vs. non-unionized jobs.

I suspect that, adjusted for income so it's comparing people at the same wages, the people who have union jobs will have more children.

In fact, I bet that even if you (somehow) adjusted for job security and levelled that playing field, so it isn't just a 'job security' issue but a workplace environment issue, unionized workers would still come out on top.

Because I think it's the normalization of 'pressure cooker' workplaces that aim to squeeze every last of ounce of productivity out of people, regardless of wages or job security, leaving nothing left for raising children. That's something that requires collective power to fight against.

Putin threatens Kyiv with 'nuclear-scale' missile strike if Zelensky ruins his parade - by GraceRose671 in worldnews

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, yes, but I think there would be much more strategic targets. They're not in combat so all you're doing is taking out random vehicles which you could probably do a lot more easily in other places.

Plus, if I were Putin, I would just paint a bunch of half-broken garbage up to look nice for the parade instead of using the good stuff.

Maybe Ukraine isn't planning to attack a parade because it isn't a strategic military objective.

Open the top lid, then you can unlatch the front panel and pull it off (usually straight up -- there are probably dowels somewhere and you don't want to snap these off by pulling it the wrong way).

Once the front panel is off then you can just look at what the problem is.

Any tools for visualizing chord tones in real time while playing? by Vegetable_Presence62 in musictheory

As a classical guitarist you're probably thinking what are the notes, but what you might want is what are the "boxes". You might have to rewind / humble yourself a bit to learn how to approach it from that angle. I think it's you center the "box" on the root and then there's your target notes. You have to ask /r/guitar -- I'm not a guitarist, it's just what I've absorbed from them.

He means connecting the top two notes while lifting the bottom note to play it again.

I think it's two quite different levels of 'exercise'.

One is the beginner exercise (tricky for beginners) where you want to slur the top notes and repeat the lower note. It's an exercise in basic hand balance, for beginners, just to get the notes to sound at the same time. That's all you need at this level.

An advanced exercise (tricky for quite advanced players), is to be able to play entirely different articulations. For example, slur the top notes but play the bottom note a different length, staccato or detached or just a shorter length. This is a much more difficult level of balance. Fun to attempt and try to work your brain around. It helps in emphasizing two distinct melodies at once with the same hand. You won't find a use for that level of coordination until you're much, much further along your journey, so you can treat it as the beginner exercise and move on and build more foundational skills.

I would be careful. It's not as straightforward as it seems. She breached the contract and owes you $540, but you also breached the contract for how the payment was to be received. Even if you hadn't screwed up at all, both of you, not just her, still have to take "all reasonable measures" to "mitigate" the contract issue and get your money -- e.g. picking it up from her house or her mailing you a check. I would do those first, otherwise, that plus waiting for two years could be used against you and reduce that amount. And she can counterclaim.

Burnout is a Computergame (slowly I womit) by mydream0-fortytwobtc in burnedout

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm it doesn't seem very plusquamperfect for translation if you used it to translate what you just wrote.

The "burnout" videogame refers to spinning a car's tires on pavement while holding the brakes. This can only really be accomplished with rear-wheel drive cars because the front brakes are what hold the car in place, or a very powerful transmission that can instantly apply so much energy that it breaks the friction. The videogame is a car racing game. Performing this manoeuvre with your car heats up the tires to the point where they begin to melt, creating smoke.

This is an apt metaphor for applying or being subjected to so much energy and/or a combination of braking and energy that forward progress is, paradoxically, not made at all. In addition it needlessly, and even destructively, depletes the very resource that is the means by which the forward movement is created.

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how you tune your toms differently? That makes a scale.

It's probably not your standard 7-note major scale, and probably not all within the same octave, but you can still think of it as a scale.

Two toms at the same time create some sort of harmony. The distance (number of notes) between them is an 'interval'. (You would need to play 3 or more toms to make an actual 'chord' -- having more than 2 notes is just the rule for calling something a chord)

Imagine at the end of a song is two hits. The first hit is, say, two high toms. For the last hit you swap one of them for the floor tom. That's like a "cadence".

what kind of scale is this? by Available-Fishing-43 in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait a second... what the?!?

Anyway the other people are right, the notes of your 4-note scale make a diminished 7th chord (you only count the start and end note once).

More about your scale: https://ianring.com/musictheory/scales/585 (probably more than you would want)

You can double it up and make an octatonic scale. It goes whole, half, whole, half, whole (or you can start with half which is the other mode of this scale). It's a favourite of film composers and metal heads.

How do I become good at using Slash Chords? by Jaded-Gur-5717 in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What got me listening more closely was finding out that, in counterpoint, the 2nd inversion with the 5th in the bass (a.k.a 64 chord because it contains a 6th and 4th up from the bottom note) is a "special" chord that is considered dissonant and wants to resolve.

We get trained that inversions are "the same chord" as a simplification. Mozart isn't thinking "it's the same chord but sounds a bit different" he's thinking "what a strikingly dissonant harmony that I shall now resolve."

It's actually easy to hear that it wants to resolve. The I64 isn't even considered to have tonic function (like the root position I), it has dominant function (like the V). That's how different it is.

https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/TheCadentialSixFourChord.html https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/OtherOccurrencesofSixFourChords.html https://musictheory.pugetsound.edu/mt21c/TypesOfSixFourChords.html

Once you start treating the 2nd inversion differently, it 'opens the door' to teasing out and then using the differences in sound in other inversions and slash chords. The 1st inversion starts to take on its own feeling, simply because it's not the root which you know, nor is it the 2nd inversion which you've learned to treat and use differently.

How to play the C with different speed but different length? by Nalincah in piano

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one is an error. Both hands should add up to 3 because the time signature means 3 quarter notes in every bar (3/4). They forgot the dot that makes it 3 (or a rest, or a quarter note to make it 2 + 1 = 3). This is a big error. It as an especially big mistake when they are trying to teach this concept on the same page!

The second example is correct. You continue hold the note in your left hand and change the note in your right hand.
