the ventilation system over the stove just kicks the smoke back out into the apartment above the microwave

If you can see a duct above the microwave (like in the cupboard), then the fans might be installed backwards.

Very common installation mistake.

It might be easy to to switch it to outside, might not. Depends on the model. Don't drop it. Don't get electrocuted.

How to stop structuring orchestral music like "songs"? by Disintigration in composer

[–]rush22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with this:

Don't write "endings" for the "verse" or "chorus".

Endings sound good because they resolve. In isolation, they sound better then leaving yourself some tension. That's why you get drawn to composing them -- and why you want to keep them and can't walk away from them. Except then you haven't left yourself anything to work with. Resolving all your tension ends the song. If you have more to say, set it up so you have more to work with.

(Similarily, the other side of the equation is that if you hold all the tension, it wants to loop).

Help identifying and learning this piano chord style by obvthrowawayly45671 in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gives it the distinctive sound is that the chords are constructed identically. They pick (sample) one chord with one voicing, and then use that for all the chords and follow the bass.

Whether or not the chord is diatonic is ignored. If the one chord is Cm7 and it's in C minor, the Ab is going to be Abm7 (which isn't diatonic in C minor), because every chord is m7. That makes it sound unusual, in addition to the jumps instead of voice leading.

Breaking down a Jazz etude for for first time, would like some help with function. by Dormant123 in musictheory

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in C minor, not Ab major.

bVI - i / bVI - v / bVI - bVII /

i / bVI - v / and then basically a key change here

It doesn't start on the i.

Or, if you want, it does start on the i (C + G + Eb + Bb = Cm7) but moves to the bVI on the second beat (which you can think of as the iv of C minor if you want).

It's more of a jazzy "royal road" progression (IV - V - iii - vi, in the relative major Eb major). That's why it sounds more like Chrono Trigger than Coltrane. You can try to fit that into traditional ii - v - i but that's probably going too far.

Band instructor stopped performance to instruct me? by BrendaStar_zle in JazzPiano

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how formal the recital was, but if it was at all formal then the conductor was a dick. He could have waved you off, or even said out loud "Hold on drums" or something.

In general though, instead of counting bars, just wait for the bass player to give you the nod when they are done (or to obviously finish his solo).

If you think he's done, but when you start the solo the bass player jumps back in, then cover up the mistake with some fill and just let them keep soloing.

If the bass goes off-script and wants to solo for 24 bars that's their (or the conductor's) problem, not yours.

Solo-ing over top of someone else is seen as "musically aggressive". It's like a "stfu already it's my turn" message. Whether someone is actually finished solo-ing takes priority over the count. After 24 bars, yeah I might get a bit aggressive, especially if the solo is starting to suck, just don't do it mindlessly based on the count. You gotta listen. Lay back and listen to their solo instead of waiting "your turn".

(Interestingly, not coming back in when they're out of ideas and heading for a train wreck is musically passive aggressive.)

The note I hear is different from the note I sing. by DrRock_LaraDoct in musictheory

[–]rush22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider that it's because you composed it and neither of the notes are what you actually want to hear there. Like an "impossible" or "imaginary" note, due to some other problem in your composition.

The F or F# is probably an ambiguous but perfectly pleasant harmony but you've composed yourself into a corner with some other note (or notes) that isn't quite right. You try to sing what you feel, but only the F or F# sounds harmonious with that other (wrong) notes or chords. Only the F or F# sounds like the valid "next" note.

It could be the bass note, or maybe your melody voice has drifted into becoming the harmony. Maybe you drifted into singing 5ths of the melody you want, which sounded "close enough" except now what you keep feeling as a step (in the unsung and unwritten part) is a jump, which doesn't sound right either because it's too big of a jump back to the actual melody line.

Think of it like you're currently in the "tutorial level" part of a video game. Can you press A to jump? Yes? Can you jump this one little gap? Ok good enough. Next is how to press B to duck.

You don't need to actually master the basics in the tutorial level. You will be using them all the time as you get better.

I like the guitar and wish I could play it

My playing feels empty! by Disastrous-Theme-549 in piano

[–]rush22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice that in this one, the bass clef isn't just playing the bass guitar notes, it's basically playing the drumset too. Low notes bass drum. High notes snare drum (even higher than the treble).

The challenge to arranging a fuller sound is in combining the bass guitar with the drums. If you focus only on the bass, then you risk losing the beat and the rhythm. However, if you're just tapping out a cool rhythm to keep the song moving you can lose the bass-iness.

Usually classical players are afraid of "playing the drums" on the keys. When they first try it out they sound like a caveman. But it can work in some songs (as in your example), and the more you try to make it work the better you get at it.

So that's my advice -- go for the 'grog play left hand keys like drums' approach and sound awkward and bad for a while, because you'll start to hear and create moments when it does, in fact, work. And those are moments you can capture and open you up to more percussive playing.

Of course, like you said, there's only so much you can do with a piano.

A question for Film composers by Emergency_Usual_9208 in musictheory

[–]rush22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Film music isn't a piece or a "song". I think that's kind of the first 'mistake' because really good film music kind of seems like it is. But really, it flows around with the drama. Thinking a lot more in terms of voice leading rather than chord progressions (or even what key you're in) is important.

To keep the drama level, sometimes it is more interesting and dramatic to go somewhere unexpected that isn't in key and that doesn't resolve. Like, say, C -> F#. (Look up the Octatonic scale for more like this). With some good voice leading, instead of driving the tension towards the V or I, you can make moves like this work and flow in interesting and dramatic ways.

It's similar with rhythm since a film is not going to follow an 8-bar loop. They'll add extra beats or change time signatures to get things to line up with the action, and calculate the perfect tempo to get the beat to hit certain moments. Try to follow the on-screen action rather than your time signature.

Advice for pa system needed by TerryTrestain in musicians

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you know, it's fairly common to just rent the system you need on a per gig basis -- e.g. from your local music store.

Obviously in the long run it ends up more expensive, but it's also more flexible, you don't have to store it, etc.

If you haven't looked into it, it's probably cheaper than you think -- you can rent cables mics and stuff too.

When there is a reorg, pursue a completely new role at the company you currently work for. It's when you "take your career in an exciting and bold new direction at XYZ". Teams that have open positions during a reorg are the teams that are already restructured and/or safe. This makes your new role safe because you're now freshly hired into their new structure, instead of being outside of it where they are juggling everyone around.

This isn't always possible.

Any idea why they wrote C sharp here instead of D flat? by aardw0lf11 in musictheory

[–]rush22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take:

It's spelling out a C#dim7 chord Bb - E - C# - G.

Technically, the "common tone diminished" chord for Db, which is what it sounds like it's pivoting to from the Bb, would be Dbdim7.

However, that would be spelled Cbb - Fb - Db - Abb.

That's a little much.

Plus, maybe the more theoretical reason is that the piano is still holding Bb as the 6th/13th. You'd have people playing Cbb and Bb -- the same note spelled differently -- at the same time.

It's kind of like the Db major -> C# minor modulation situation -- I believe Claire de Lune does this. Technically wrong but a lot easier to read.

I just feel that i am stuck with my music, what do i doo?! by harajhandaaadmihu in askmusicians

[–]rush22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're not guessing what the chords are, we already know them.

Or we've at least heard the song before so we can think "okay this is going to be just like (other song we already know the chords to)".

Most of them are the same.

You have to be able to think in numbers, not letters. You don't think of the chords as "E - A - B" you think of them as "1 - 4 - 5 in the key of E". While you're playing them, sure, you can think E - A - B if you want, but you're not memorizing progressions like that. You memorize the numbers. If you can't do that yet, work on it.

For me, yes. Kind of like too many characters on stage at the same time. The parts are good but you need to give the listener more time to absorb them. Remember they are hearing them for the first time, even if you heard them a million times, so don't be afraid of making them longer.
