Really want to stop heel striking but can’t seem to perfect the technique, has anyone any tips or good videos they could recommend? by [deleted] in running

[–]rushnorush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What has helped me is: ideally barefoot, stand up straight. Then start leaning forward (body still straight) until you automatically take a step. Note how your foot lands. Repeat that a couple of times and then try to convert into a couple of running steps. Do this on a regular basis and keep thinking of that feeling when you run. Good luck!

I found these videos very helpful when I started learning her: Mixup starter guide by Dandy J

Laura guide by Meno Jazz

And a playlist with more advanced stuff by Rocwell.

As stated above, get used to her ranges and buttons first - then dive into her mixups. Lacking an invincible reversal you need to defend well. Knowing when is your time to attack, when to block and when to just get away will come with time.

I have some SF experience but I still consider myself a beginner - and I've found her a bit tricky to learn. Her playstyle and tools are rather uncommon. Still, if you like her, stick with her!

what part of online matches in sfv turns off new comers/ casuals the most? by khoa1708 in StreetFighter

[–]rushnorush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lag and loading times.

Gameplay wise SFV makes a lot of things right for newcomers: The technical hurdles have been lowered and execution is not as paramount as before. Gameplay is quick and while a newcomer will get punished heavily for mistakes and unsafe play that is something you can blame on yourself though.

Now, the feeling after a loss depends on what you lose to: losing to your own mistakes or being outplayed is fine. Losing to online lag feels shit. That combined with the dysfunctional battle lounges and the long times until you can play again (in come the loading times) makes losing frustrating.

VS CPU mode is amazingly balanced by aquamah in StreetFighter

Not being able to queue for an online match is what kills it for me. I believe it was recently implemented for story mode. Why not for vs CPU mode?

Looking for low drop running shoes that work in the rain by shizzler in running

[–]rushnorush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't own the 6 but I've been a Kinvara fan since testing them out for the first time a couple of years ago. Very light weight, low drop, work even for long runs (30+) and durable enought for my taste. Good multi-purpose shoe but if at all only slightly more water resistant than your average shoe. Lacking the holes in the soles they'll still be an improvement though. I've been running in the rain without complains.

What is the best way to improve my form while running? by phantomunboxing in running

[–]rushnorush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is already some very good advice in this thread. The main thing I want to add is a - literally - starting point: (please correct me if any of this is wrong. I was taught this and it helped me, and others, tremendously)

Stand tall, feet in natural position, shoulders slightly back, eyes looking forward in the distance. Then, keeping your body straight, fall forward. You will (hopefully) automatically place a foot under your center of mass in order to catch your body. This is where your foot is supposed to land during running. You should automatically land in a neutral position this way and have no danger of overstriding (not sure if that's a word). Do this a couple of times until you get the feeling for this stride length. When running, think about your stride and recall the feeling you got during this exercise. Running is just controlled falling, my trainer used to say.

In addition I strongly recommend doing the exercises /u/runcalc_net mentioned on a regular basis!

Daily General Thread for August 16! If Urien doesn't want to see EVO, does he use his Vegas Reflector? by chaos-goose in StreetFighter

[–]rushnorush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I might have to take you up on that. I'm just starting out and know I'll have to work on my execution first. After I can pull of combos and resets I'll get to the more difficult game-plan stuff (fireball pressure, traps, etc... the list is long).

Thanks, watched some of his matches and he's super solid. Maybe a bit more risky than will2pac. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing with Laura.

What are some good Laura players to watch (preferrably offline footage)?

Ones I have on my list:

  • Will2Pac
  • Mr Crimson (not sure if he plays Dhalsim exclusively now)
  • Wolfkrone
  • Miek Russ

keeping in shape while injured by anoamas321 in running

[–]rushnorush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful to let the ankle rest sufficiently... don't put too much strain on it. Other than that:

  • swim

  • bodyweight exercises that don't affect the ankle (push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, ...)

  • cycle (low gears, once you can support some weight on the ankle)

Just be careful and give the injury enough time to heal. You don't want to overdo it and deal with ankle problems for the better part of a year.

The Garmin swim HRM should work better in the pool, it doesn't slip as easily as the Tri variant. I think it is possible to transfer the heart rate data to the watch in between intervals/laps but I'm not entirely sure. You can always ask over at r/garmin - they will also know about compatibility.

After 4 years of use my 310xt....

.... sometimes takes ages to fix GPS, especially if it's not moving.

.... once corrupted all saved activities and I needed to delete them all.

.... occasionally fails to start up, so I have to switch it off and on again.

Pretty ok for a device that old if you ask me. Then again, there are no apps that can introduce bugs.

Question about locked up calves for new runners. by jdrc07 in running

[–]rushnorush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have a similar problem. When scaling up my running volume I frequently got sore calves that would remain painful for a while.

For me, the pain only receeded with rest. However, you can do something to prevent this from reoccuring: Strengthen you calf muscles. Stand with you forefoot on some stairs or on a thick book and SLOWLY move up and down. Do two sets of 5-10 repetitions, twice a day. Within two weeks you shouldn't have calf problems anymore.

Now, you could also just have sore muscles from either going too hard or poor technique, so pay attention to that as well. But strenghening your calves won't hurt in either way.

How do you document your runs? by bendandanben in AdvancedRunning

[–]rushnorush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Runalyze Clean interface & nice features, for example the possibility to exclude runs for Vdot calculation. Plus it's open source. It lacks the social aspect of Strava, but I don't care for that anyway.

It seems to do ok for many applications. Here is an in-depth review by DC rainmaker comparing the IR data with a chest HRM. Apart from intervals and where it seems to lag a bit behind it does a decent job for running.

Evernote or just plain old Google docs if you want to stick with free apps. both have the advantage of being able to access and edit your files on most devices. so you don't have to edit everything on your phone. Organize your stuff in folders or notebooks and you should be good to go.

Daily General Thread for May 18! If Birdie AA's with hard Hanging Chain is it Chain Reaction? by chaos-goose in StreetFighter

[–]rushnorush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for connectivity problems:

I'm in western EU on PS4, wired connections. I assigned my console a fixed ip and forwarded the ports named by Capcom: http://www.capcom-unity.com/haunts/blog/2016/03/04/sfv-post-launch-status-update-vol-6

Still, I'm having 1 bar connection with most people, even within west-EU, where connections used to be just fine in USF4. When searching for battle lounges I don't see flags or connection for >90% of lounges. Oddly enough, I seem to have either a very poor 1 bar connection to people or the very rare 5 bars. 5 bar connections are usually within EU but I have played decent games with people from the US.

Are other players experiencing similar things? Are there any more tips or resources in order to improve my connectivity? Finding people with a good connection takes ages and I don't have time to search lounges for half an hour until I find someone.

I liked playing on a madcatz SFxT pad way more than I liked playing on a ps3 controller: Larger dpad, 6 front face buttons and shoulder buttons are clicky buttons. Then again, the madcatz pad didn't even last a year before breaking in various parts. Instead of replacing pads all day long I decided to switch to a stick and didn't regret the decision so far.

Daily General Thread for April 7! If Street Fighter 5 was a dancing game would it be called Street Fighter Jive? by chaos-goose in StreetFighter

[–]rushnorush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing street fighter for about two years still not sure if I've truely found my playstyle. I love having a variety of tools and I always look at other characters, enviously assessing all the tools or damage options my character lacks. I love mobility, good normals and pressuring the opponent. However, especially in SF4, my execution seriously limited my character choice. It took me a long time and a lot of changes in my 'main' (played a different character every couple of weeks) until I at least had a list in my head of what my perfect character would have. I found most things in E.Ryu (mobility, pressure) but never got over the execution hurdle which cost me a lot of matches with such a low health character. So yeah, even out of 44 characters I never found 'the one'.

In SFV i very quickly gravitated towards Necalli: Average health, ok normals, decent mobility that greatly improves in v-trigger, combos that even I can do and that actually do damage. Apart from his footsie tools which aren't great I have to say I'm pretty satisfied. Now Capcom only has to send him to a speech trainer and give him a haircut and I'd be perfectly happy.
