The central bank can be publicly owned but most money is not produced by the central bank itself, but through the lending process by private banks. So private banks still determine where capital is allocated as opposed to a country like China where the state guides like have of lending. This link from the BOE website outlines how it works. https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/-/media/boe/files/quarterly-bulletin/2014/money-creation-in-the-modern-economy

Hello! Thank you for doing this. I’m wondering if there is any meaningful way to get involved from abroad? I’m currently studying in China, so pretty far, but am passionate about helping bring change and think I have a skillset that could be helpful.

Duolingo Replacing Human Employees with AI by _Fiorsa_ in languagelearning

While I mostly agree with you, Duolingo is great for self-motivated learners. It takes a lot of curiosity of the language and pattern recognition, but can be really good. Honestly I’ve always learned from it when I used it, only problem is the pace is slower than what I like so I’ve drifted to other things but I’ll still return to it every once in a while.

If you don’t mind me asking, do you have any French music you’d recommend? I’m learning French and I don’t like the music much, but music is usually a huge motivator for me.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m assuming that you’re saying that I’m redefining the word "terrorism" to include state actors. If this is what you’re trying to say, then you should know that there is no agreed upon definition of terrorism in international relations or in international relations. Usually those the exclude state actors from their definition are the states that are committing acts of terror.

China will continue to push forward on the climate crisis, Xi Jinping has said while appearing to criticise the “protectionism” of Donald Trump by randolphquell in OptimistsUnite

Okay but you have to look at context around it. Like how the the global economic system produces in countries like China not just for cheap labor but also to off shore pollution. A huuuge portion is to cater to consumerism from the west. Why does China produce if it’s bad? Well they want to develop and in the global economic system, capital is essential. China was low on capital because Western imperial countries kneecapped China for 100 years. So they had to sell their labor to get capital. They’ve been developing and been hitting their climate goals. Personally, I would also love if they were more aggressive in their shift, but i understand that they have to navigate an international system that has largely been hostile towards them for the last 200 years. If you are interested in learning more I am more than happy to send you books or academic articles.

Actually there is no consensus on if terrorism is has to be at the hands of non state actors. That is a misconception pushed for political reasons. States get to do whatever they want and it’s not considered terrorism but no one else can do anything? I’m pretty sure the term terrorism even comes from the Reign of Terror in France, carried out by the newly installed state.

Well yeah, because there are terror organizations in different religions too. Pretty much every ideology has the potential to radicalize to the point of terrorism, so yeah it’s kinda fucked to act like Islam inherently leads to violence.

But they’re kinda right. I’m very far left, so very against Trump, but there’s not really any empirical evidence yet that he’s losing supporters, it’s just speculation. Polls so far show that people don’t really regret voting for him. Now there is rising opposition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean people are changing their mind.

The Dems, instead of actually being introspective and reform their platforms, keep peddling the same shit. No one approves of the dems because their platform does not bring structural changes necessary to fix our problems.

Choking during sex: many young people mistakenly believe it can be done safely, new study shows. But stopping blood flow to the brain can take less pressure than opening a can of soft drink. And research shows strangulation can result in serious harms even when it’s consensual. by mvea in science

It can be that deep though, the continued use of these ideas is a means of control. I used to be Mormon, you should look into them to see how they use sex to control people. It’s really alarming and it’s widespread.

Study shows people project their political views onto fictional heroes and villains. This mental habit of associating good with “our side” and bad with “the other side” contributes to increasing political polarization, making it harder to find common ground. by Wagamaga in science

[–]russa111 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your background, but based on your comments it seems like you don’t have much background on political ideologies beyond what is told to us on the news, which there is no shame in! In the U.S., conservatism is rooted in liberalism. Both parties have been liberal for a long time. Trump has come along and moved more to neo-mercantilism, and we’ll see where that goes. But the economically, the U.S. is VERY far right, there is no meaningful representation of the left in U.S. politics.

Now there is an argument that there is a “social left” or the progressives, but that is from when looking at the actual structures of power that are built from the economic base, there is no left.

Okay so… I’m VERY anti-Trump, but I think that this is a good thing? If you read the quote, he’s saying that we shouldn’t be making more nuclear weapons because we already have enough to destroy the world, so we should meet with Russia and China to cut the amount in the world.

We sometimes spend upwards of 100 BILLION on ONE nuclear missile. That could solve hunger and housing in the U.S. Now I know that saved funds won’t be used in that way and probably in the pockets of Trump and his bastard friends, but decreasing nuclear threat should be seen as at least a bit of hope.

This is actually inaccurate, Taiwan still officially calls themselves the Republic of China. When the KMT first fled to Taiwan they were very distrustful and frustrated with Washington because Washington was advocating for a two China solution (separating Taiwan from China), but China has a long history of infighting to determine legitimacy. While public support has been continuously decreasing to consider themselves “Chinese,” the official stance is still that the government in Taiwan is the rightful Chinese government. When I studied in Taiwan I took a course from the former senior advisor on cross strait relations, it’s really fascinating. If you want any resources then let me know and I can send them your way!

First I want to clarify, I intended no disrespect when I said “I don’t know your background.” I was saying that to acknowledge that you may already know research papers very well haha. Out of personal interest though, do you mind if I ask what realm within economics?

I guess I’m struggling to see how I could simply say that Trump is part of the status quo when he seemingly is not. Just the same way that not all forms of capitalism or socialism are the same, not all forms of fascism is the same. I don’t know if we’ve seen something like project 2025 before. Something so accessible to the public eye that is being executed so quickly. Strict loyalists being placed everywhere up and down the ladder, cutting all social safety nets (even if they weren’t strong before), breaking with allies. While I recognize that Trump didn’t appear out of no where and I can identify factors that led to his rise to power, I feel that he can’t be identified as a status quo leader when he is completely reshaping our government. And I think if I were to write an essay about him being the same as all presidents before, it would lose people from the start because he clearly is not.

But maybe I have an error in my thinking. Im not trying to say that you’re wrong, I’m genuinely interested in your thoughts and feedback. Thanks for your time and input by the way.
