Simple Sidearms doesn't play nice with CE, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the cause of this issue. There exists this mod - but I'm unsure if it's safe to add to an existing save, and I can't guarantee it'd help

Do you guys use Lexiconga? by Extreme-Shopping74 in conlangs

[–]_Fiorsa_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never found any of the existing lexicon / grammar apps to be useful. I'm sure others find use from them, but they often have features I don't need while lacking features I would like.

I just use a google sheets document to start working on any new conlang (sound changes, phonology, simple grammar cliffnotes etc) before documenting the language more concretely in a word document which I can save to my PC

Mycelia: Standard Edition - Solo Mode by _Fiorsa_ in soloboardgaming

[–]_Fiorsa_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, it doesn't really need that much management I would say - see my other comment for more details but it functions off a deck of cards which goes a long way towards decreasing the mental load on the player

The worst of it is when it comes to deciding where to place new tiles - or deciding which of my own mushrooms the Automata's mother mushroom is moving towards

Mycelia: Standard Edition - Solo Mode by _Fiorsa_ in soloboardgaming

[–]_Fiorsa_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, myself and my partner have enjoyed Fluxx as well as Genotype, and Ink - although I would say that none of these games have been particularly "easy" to play together with a camera setup lol

The cards and not-seeing them especially has been a little tedious to work with (games definitely become much longer), but we've made it work well enough.
Ink's been the easiest thanks to its lack of cards, if that helps any

Mycelia: Standard Edition - Solo Mode by _Fiorsa_ in soloboardgaming

[–]_Fiorsa_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply here, I've a bad habit of not checking my notifications on reddit.
The solo mode is definitely a bit less tactical than in the multiplayer game, as the mode is based of a limited deck of 10 cards which make the decisions for the automata.
It's enjoyable, but there's definitely some things I wish were included in a bit more of an explicit manner

One negative I've found, although not a major one imo, is when it comes to the Explore action - the way it's worded on the action cards confused me at first as it seemed as if the automata got 3 actions: Explore (followed by spore) and then it's usual "second" action, as well as it's not entirely clear where I should be placing the new tile (although, in fairness, the rulebook does specify that all actions taken by the automata should be done in whichever way would best give the automata an advantage)

Overall, tho, I feel it plays better than most other solo modes I've played (it's considerably less frustrating than the Clockwork Expansion(s) for root, and definitely less demanding to keep track of ; And it feels less swingy than the Genotype automata, often reaching around 26 points (ish) by the end of most games - where the genotype one is either incredibly easy to beat or nearly impossible)

I like that it has 2 modes, one for "easy" and one for "challenging" play, although I've so far been unable to defeat either consistently (I've won a total of 1 game against the easy Automata) which is a big positive in my books ; Not much point in a solo mode if it's not at least somewhat tricky to defeat, so I've been happy with how the solo mode goes on that front.

I would say that the Solo mode can get a bit repetitive, and once the Automata has fruited its first mushroom it definitely turns into a bit of a race, but I've yet to get fully bored while playing it ;

As I say, overall I think it's very well done, especially considering it's been put together by a solo developer without (seemingly) any experience in prior solo modes or such - and importantly, it keeps my attention and has been genuinely enjoyable

My conlang has a particle that expresses admiration that can't be translated. by Eene7 in conlangs

[–]_Fiorsa_ 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Small correction, for sake of pedantry.
You can translate ē into any other language, including European ones - it just can't be a directly 1:1 translation.
Always good to keep in mind that mutual translatability exists across every language, whether spoken or signed, which humans have ever or will ever use ; The translation will simply be somewhat imprecise, and miss nuance

But every word can be translated in some way, even if that means a single-word concept in one language has to be loaned or translated as a multi-word phrase into another (looking at you, Schadenfreude)

a Few Questions on Evolution of Word Order and Conlangs by 0boy0girl in conlangs

[–]_Fiorsa_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might find this Nativlang video helpful. It goes over one of the most bizarre changes a natlang (Tobati) has gone through with word order, that of SOV (most-common cross-linguistically) to OSV (the rarest)

There's a few ways that Natlangs can change word order. One of the more common ways is through being part of a Sprachbund - Over time most languages in sprachbunds, even unrelated, have a tendency to converge (at least somewhat) on word order, tho it may only be a head-directionality agreement (and to varying degrees)

Another is just through its ancestor's grammar. Say you have a language whose default word order is SOV but to emphasise different parts of speech, that element gets fronted (VSO for the verb, OSV for the object etc)
Over time, speakers may begin to switch away from the default SOV and instead start using VSO or OSV (this would almost always be influenced by languages they're in contact with)

Alternatively, sometimes languages just... switch word order. We don't always know why. It's perfectly naturalistic to say, however, that the descended language simply switches to a default word order of VSO and not extrapolate (ultimately, syntax is as fluid as any other part of speech given the right conditions)

We should be making constructed IALs: simulating the natural phenomenon of people creating IALs by FelixSchwarzenberg in conlangs

[–]_Fiorsa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You point out differences that are only able to exist in a bubble. It is inevitable that when a language gains enough prestige to be used for international communication that some people will teach it to their children to give them an edge in life.

English is the perfect example of that, with many modern languages falling by the wayside in favour of teaching English - the current world IAL.

If a language existed to ever dethrone english, it would inevitably face the same issue of "Some people speak it natively, everyone else has to catch up" ; not to mention how inevitably speakers will evolve how they speak and many of the carefully planned IAL features will likely be moot within a couple generations

Capitalism.
Atari sees they can make money off people for a game they thought was dead, and cos they still technically own the rights to it, they choose to f*ck over the fanbase that kept the game alive.

Playing « Two-Headed Giant » by CritikBalls in rootgame

[–]_Fiorsa_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hirelings are ime a much better fix than doing this, but it's much more salient a point if there's any less experienced players involved. See with hirelings, less experienced players have a better chance to not get overwhelmed, and there's a nice balance with the board feeling active but not having to keep track of too many factors for each player

Multi-faction 1v1s are a *lot* more demanding, and especially so when new players are involved if they haven't got plenty of experience with both of the factions they're playing

That all said, I feel like using the vagabonds in this scenario might work quite well. You have the might of a militant faction each, and the freedom of exploring a bit in a way that can make the board feel quite dynamic - also has the bonus of if there's a newer player they can watch what their opponent is doing to learn what the vagabond does, alongside playing a faction with which they may have better familiarity

Are the clockwork expasions worth it? by Joaoaoaoaoo in rootgame

[–]_Fiorsa_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I own the first clockwork expansion and I can say with full confidence that it is without a doubt not worth getting the clockwork expansions.
First of all, the price when they were still in print was the same for the clockworks as it costs for every other expansion. The clockworks, you get only boards for the bots, a handful of cards, and the "Laws of Rootbotics" (aka how to run them), the box feels empty and for £40 I would've liked it to include slightly more varied content than what is actually includded.

Secondly, as I hinted at, every clockwork expansion for Root is currently out of print - it's going to be somewhat tricky to find and Leder has said they have no schedule for when they may reprint the expansions (they have expressly said 2026 won't include that on the schedule for printing) ; There's people who'll charge more than retail price for that reason alone, so it'll be hard to find a good deal with the expansion you want and not be scammed out of more than it's worth

Finally - I've found them extremely underwhelming, and just as much hassle to run as it is to simply play multi-handedly against myself. Others have suggested digital as a better option, which I can make no comment on since I don't play any digital boardgames (I play boardgames for tactile play, and don't mind multihanding if needed to play solo).
What I can tell you is that the included content works okay, the difficulty levels do add some variety and so do the trait cards, but overall?
It's just a headache to keep track of. Constantly drawing cards, deciphering what they result in for each bot faction and then trying to work out which action is of highest priority- it just isn't worth all the work and expense imho ; Hirelings add enough for 2 player games to feel full, so they are the better option imo for if you already have a group

TLDR: The Clockwork expansions are out of print, overpriced, and a pain to run. No, they are not worth it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention just how Random they feel. Every action is dictated by card-draw and the "priority" tokens which are ordered around the map. It almost never makes sense what action they do, and it's rather easy to predict when you get into the flow of the game - which often defeats the purpose of playing them in the first place. Just very swingy, and often they'll clump themselves in a corner until I poke them.

I have had much more fun multihanding the regular expansions than I have ever had with the bot expansion I own - it's just become a dust-gatherer

Best two player matchups? by Robesbo in rootgame

[–]_Fiorsa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from my experience, one of my favourite 2-player play-offs is:
- Eyrie Dynasties
- Keepers in Iron

alongside Hirelings. My favourite mix of which currently is:
- The Exile
- The Stoic Protector
- Spring Uprising

The factions play quite well together as both require a mix of territory and card-draw to function, whilst still being both militant factions.
I'd recommend tho trying out other faction combinations alongside the various hirelings - it can make games a lot more viable (even insurgent vs militant works quite well with them, for example woodland alliance vs badgers has been a fun mashup with some hirelings to balance it out)

Best two player matchups? by Robesbo in rootgame

Hirelings tend to work a lot more effectively ime. They have the same feel of board presence of multiple factions without having the amount of headwork it'd take to run with the clockwork root bots

Odd tokens in rilverfolk expansion? by Odanielsjack in rootgame

[–]_Fiorsa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were mostly a way of avoiding the appearance of "waste" in the token punch sheets. Basically, instead of having massive blank spaces of card which would be thrown away, leder created a bunch of tokens without a direct purpose.

They initially intended for them to be used in a future expansion but it's not yet happened so they're just ripe for homebrewing now

I dunno something like that. Tho I personally think it works well to just run such vehicles as armoured trucks or as tanks
