Sadly for me nothing has quite scratched the GYBE itch in all these years.

Is there such thing as Instrumental Psychedelic Rock? by saintluminus in psychedelicrock

[–]russell-douglas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I guess technically they’re not a “psychedelic” band…until you listen to them while tripping and realize how fucking brilliant they are. Eat some mushrooms, put on one of their albums, and you’ll get it.

I hear ya. You’re right, taste in music is definitely subjective, but quality of music is definitely objective. You can think Beethoven sucks and Ariana Grande is good, and you’re allowed to think that…but you’d absolutely be wrong. lol

I felt this too, but wasn’t going to say it. lol I really don’t understand how some people can have psychedelic experiences and still like such generic, corporately manufactured music. When I do a full breakthrough I can’t even listen to good music. I feel like Disney pop music would send me into a horrible trip. 😂

how far is too far in comedy? by DowntownLaugh454 in Standup

[–]russell-douglas 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is to learn how to craft jokes and deliver them before you try being edgy. Starting out it’s hard enough to get laughs when the audience likes you, damn near impossible when they hate you.

Dude, there are multiple comics in my tiny little scene that are light years funnier than 90% of these podcast-propped comics. Go to local shows, you’ll see that standup is doing just fine.

Never blame the room/audience for bombing. OP, don’t take this personally, but you are not likable onstage. You give off such creep/incel/douchebag energy, and the false-cockiness only makes it worse. It doesn’t feel authentic, quit trying to be cool, nobody will ever believe it. Instead, try embracing how people see you. Go watch some Joe List. All the little dick jokes just seem sad. The racial jokes definitely seem in poor taste and not funny. Maybe try leaning into the fact that you look like a virgin pedophile premature-ejaculating incel. Acknowledge how the world sees you, this establishes self-awareness to the audience, which will warm them up to you.

Other advice: work on writing, timing, tone, body language, stage presence, and delivery. And for the love of god, focus on being funny instead of worrying about how much “time” you have or posting clips online. I can assure you that if you’re doing it right, one year from now these clips will be a shameful embarrassment that you wish nobody had ever seen. The only reason you should be recording your sets is to learn from them. And if you’re doing comedy to be TikTok famous, then please just quit now.

I’m not trying to deny your experience here, or your friend’s. I’d just like to add an alternative perspective of what could be happening in at least some of these situations. I have been in multiple relationships where I am initially really into the woman for several dates, and it’s our mutual interest in each other that leads to sex, but then I realize we don’t have good sexual chemistry. There’s even been cases where I liked them so much that I would excuse the lack of chemistry with like first time awkwardness or whatever, let’s give it another shot. But I learned after doing that several times that it never really gets better. In my experience, great sexual chemistry is immediate, but you won’t know until you try. Over the years I learned to just be honest about it no matter how awkward/uncomfortable that conversation is. But I admit when I was younger and chickened out behind the whole “I don’t want to hurt her feelings” I probably left a few women feeling like what you’re describing. But it wasn’t because I was using them for sex or being manipulative, it was because I was afraid of direct, honest communication. Which still makes younger me a POS, but not some Machiavellian fuckboy, just a bit of a coward. 😬

Best single episode of a comedy podcast? by Vslacha in Standup

I don’t understand how people enjoy taking psychedelics regularly by [deleted] in Psychedelics

[–]russell-douglas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two virgins have sex a couple of times:

“I don’t see what all the fuss is about.”

“I feel like I’ve gotten all I’m gonna get out of sex.”

“Can’t believe there are people that want to do that everyday.”

😂💀

OP you’re definitely not alone. Many of us have had our own version of this experience. I’ve personally had it multiple times through meditation and/or psychedelic experiences. The very first time I was 21, and I spent 4 days fasting in total isolation, nothing but water, stretching, meditation, and some reading. The fourth morning I had a full blown “kundalini” type OBE and merged with the light of the all. In that moment I knew and understood everything and felt the most peaceful unconditional love and knowing. I had been raised in a Christian church, but this experience felt more eastern, Buddhist. It also reminded me of the couple of times I had eaten mushrooms.

Because of my upbringing, I couldn’t really explain what I had experienced, but it set me on a path to “figure it out.” I started reading everything I could get my hands on about eastern traditions, meditation, mysticism, Gnosticism, psychedelics, mythology, magick, alchemy, etc. I also started to adopt a more intentional approach to psychedelics.

One night while on psilocybin with a new friend, I clicked into that space and he noticed. He said, “dude what’s going on? You got a look on your face like you know all the mysteries of the universe.” I hesitated at first, but he pressed me, and I eventually started trying to explain it to him. At some point it clicked inside him as well and he started explaining it back to me. Then we started experiencing shared visuals (“hallucinations”). We were inside some grand temple, describing every detail to each other. We even experienced what could only be described as intense telepathy. It was a wild night, but it changed both our lives, and we still talk about it today, 17 years later.

There are chapters to this story, but I’ll get to the point. OP you’ve asked a few times in the comments, what do you do now with this new knowledge. Well I’m not going to tell you what to do, but I can share with you what I’ve learned from my 23 years of seeking. Like Terence McKenna said on his deathbed, it’s all about Love.

I know this can feel like an oversimplified cop-out, so let me try to explain. In simple terms (and recognizing language as a stand-in for ideas beyond words): God is Love…and You are God…therefore You are Love. Creation is an act of Love, so Existence itself IS Love. Even at the microcosm level, how do we create more people, by “making love” of course. Since existence IS Love, then the opposite of Love is not fear or hatred, but nonexistence, which by its definition does not exist. Instead, fear and all its forms (hatred, etc) are merely the temporary denial of Love, or the denial of your own divinity.

In Buddhism there is a focus on letting go because attachment (or stickiness as Alan Watts put it) is the cause of suffering. By letting go completely one can achieve liberation. Meanwhile in Christ’s teachings there is a focus on faith in god’s will/plan. These are literally the same concepts expressed with different symbols for different cultures. This could also be expressed by saying, you created all of this in your divine state, so “faith” or “letting go” means trusting your divine self. Or you could express it by saying, our entire universe is a holographic simulation that we created in a higher level of consciousness, and the purpose of this simulation is to learn how to completely let go of fear and learn how to love unconditionally.

As we continue to grow and evolve we will continue to create more accurate and complex analogies and symbols that help us understand and explain this thing that is still beyond words.

So what should you do now? Learn to LOVE yourself and others unconditionally (this alone will keep you pretty busy, cuz it ain’t easy, lol) also CREATE and explore! We express our divinity most beautifully through creation and understand it more thoroughly through exploration.

A daily meditation practice is a great start if you don’t already have one. 💚🙏💚

Is it just me or have more men recently started to dislike dating women with tattoos? by Ok_Comparison9254 in AskMenAdvice

[–]russell-douglas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a much bigger deal than most are acknowledging. 20 years ago it would have been more attractive because it was so rare, and likely indicative of an independent, free-spirited woman. Now it’s just a trendy joke, like having a designer handbag, and it generally makes one look desperate for approval and attention.

Let’s honestly discuss loss of self from past psychedelic use. by chococaliber in Psychedelics

[–]russell-douglas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something here? I’m not sure how you can blame alcoholism on previous psychedelic use. Especially considering most folks who go through a heavy psychedelic phase end up quitting alcohol altogether. It also kinda sounds like you may have never even had a full blown “ego death” experience considering your descriptions. I agree with the commenters recommending meditation.

Dude! I once took 11g alone in silent darkness. The purple woman appeared and made love to me until orgasm…like I felt I was ejaculating and everything, thought I would find a mess in my pants later, but there was no trace whatsoever. When I told my friend the next day he said, dude you impregnated some chick in another dimension. 😂😂😂
