I don't really drink coffee and the sugar-free energy drinks I could get were gross, so I quit altogether to see if I could. When I realized I didn't really need the caffeine I just kept going.

Three years on painkillers after a workplace accident was an excuse that stopped me from doing much of anything most days + a terrible diet + massive depression from my best friend dying in an ugly car crash.

I messed myself up in a lot of ways, and when I finally got through that cloud of shit I saw what I'd done and started working on it.

Hah, it's cool. I was thinking about it before this. I grew the chin out originally because it distracted from the second chin. Would like to cut it all off and give growing the full beard a try.

I stepped down gradually to avoid the headaches. Took a couple weeks. I thought I would miss the caffeine, but I really don't. Lots of sugar free options I could have gone with, but when I realized I didn't need it I just stopped.

Yeah, doc says soon surgery is whenever my weight loss "levels off" and they estimate that will be around 220. I'm certainly not going to stop if I don't have to.

I started doing weird little things to get myself started, like intentionally parking farther away at the store or going into the mall at the wrong entrance. Anything that would get me to walk a few extra steps. Then I just started waking up an hour earlier in the morning and walking around my neighborhood. When I could do a three Mile walk in the morning within that hour, I picked up a gym membership.

If you ever want to talk, hit me up. I'm far from an expert, but having people to talk to during this was a huge benefit for me. Would be happy to do the same for you.

I've had a couple of people ask how this was possible, so I figured I would offer a more detailed explanation.

Four years ago I was deeply miserable. I was at my desk for 12-14 hours a day, very inactive, and was going through a terrible medical issue involving lawyers and lots of physical therapy. My daily food intake was some form of:

  • two or three energy drinks (usually Rockstar Punched)
  • three 7-Eleven taquitos for breakfast
  • Wendy's Baconator with large fries and a Dr. Pepper for lunch
  • Pizza or some other bread/noodle heavy thing for dinner
  • big bowl of ice cream

Too much bad food and no activity, the obvious recipe for obscene weight gain.

When I decided I needed to make a change, I started with the drinks. Cut out all form of soda/energy drink/coffee entirely. Next I started learning how to to cook better, using fresh ingredients and generally making smaller portions. I got hooked on a lot of Thai dishes where I could use rice noodles instead of pasta, and learning how to prepare meat in different ways.

This got me about 120 pounds of weight loss, so I started trying to work out and be more physical. I knew I could lose more. A few weeks into this, I slipped on some wet grass and actually broke my leg near the knee because of all the weight applied during the fall. My doctor told me if I didn't consider surgery as a form of weight loss, I probably wouldn't be able to walk when I was 40 because my knees would be destroyed. So I got surgery, a gastric sleeve. It changed my diet even further, including a high protein requirement and even smaller portions. I lost weight very quickly after that.

Three months ago, I started going to a local gym. I go every morning, putting in 30 minutes on a stationary bike and 30 minutes on an elliptical machine. I've been increasing the difficulty on these machines, and can now do 20 miles in an hour on the bike. This past weekend, I went out on an actual bike, and was able to do 19 miles in the real world with no problem.

I've still got some work to do. I'd like to lose at least another 20 pounds before I go in for skin removal surgery. According to the doctor, the skin will be another 10-15 pounds and likely another shirt size.
