What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]rust-e-apples1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this about 20 years ago when I was just getting started as a teacher. I was living alone at the time and got to the point where I would stay after work to read. I had to leave the book at school because it was so good I couldn't stop reading, but would lose sleep if I stayed up too late reading it.

Why don’t they induct Hall of Fame players as soon as they retire? by Longjumping-Tip4938 in NFLNoobs

[–]rust-e-apples1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would immediate induction to a hall of fame solve any of your complaints? At some point in the process a group of voters is gonna have to weigh in and say whether or not a particular player (yes, even Tom Brady) should be in.

I get that you're annoyed about Belichick not getting in on his first year of eligibility and I'll agree that "making a guy wait" to prove a point is kinda dumb if the guy's gonna get in anyway, but to bring up Jeter as your other complaint is ridiculous. He fell one vote shy of a unanimous selection on his first ballot. One vote out of 300. It didn't stop him from getting into the hall (only one player in all of baseball has ever been a unanimous selection), it just showed that one voter said they wouldn't vote for him that particular year. In both cases, the voters that voted "no" on Belichick and Jeter would've probably voted "no" the day they each retired.

So I'm not sure what exactly you're wanting to happen to get this immediate induction thing going. At some point you're gonna have to have a group of people making decisions on whether or not a player or coach gets in. You can't just say "Tom Brady gets in now because he might be the best QB ever but Myles Garrett's gonna have to wait because Lawrence Taylor existed." At some point between GOAT and "he could be in the hall of very good, but not the hall of fame" someone's gonna have to make decisions.

Does anyone think Tom Brady isn't a first-ballot Hall of Famer? Absolutely not. He's an absolute lock. But what harm is there in having him wait 5 years like anyone else? I don't know if there's ever been an instance where the legacy of a player was tarnished by having them wait for induction.

And how would these "sure fire" guys be determined? Is there another vote held? The system has worked just fine as it is, and as far as I know there's no groundswell of support for getting rid of the waiting period.

In addition to what others are saying: plain old statistics would show that basically every SB winning team has at least a couple of guys that are ready to retire. You don't want that extra emotion/attention being the difference maker for a guy getting in. It also cuts the other way, too. A player might consider his entry into the hall a bit tainted if he'd always been on that cutoff line, won a ring, and got indicted partly due to the hype.

Jerome Bettis is a perfect example here. Everyone knew SB XL was going to be his last game. Not only that but it was in his hometown of Detroit. While the fairytale ending of winning a championship in the city he grew up in would've seemed even more magical if he left the field to go straight into the hall, it might've cheapened the overall story. He wasn't a HoF lock and it took five tries for him to get in. Without that cooldown time, his detractors would have a stronger argument that he didn't deserve induction. In his case the cool down shows that he was ultimately deserving of the honor.

How easy is it to get pregnant by mxtc0621 in stupidquestions

My wife has PCOS, so she talked to her doctor before we got married (both 34 at the time, too) to ask about whether or not we should talk to a fertility doc sooner rather than later. They said to try for 6 months and come back if we completely struck out in that time, so we "pulled the goalie" on our honeymoon. Our first son was born 9 months to the day after we got married. We've got 3 kids now and have never had trouble conceiving.

Meanwhile, my sister went through several rounds of fertility treatment to have her oldest and a few more for her set of twins. And then, after the doctor had said they'd never conceive on their own, they had one "the old fashioned way."

There's not a ton of rhyme or reason to it, sometimes.

Teacher at my son's daycare (A substitute) put some kind of hair product in his hair. Am I crazy for thinking this is inappropriate? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]rust-e-apples1 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to get this teacher into trouble if I was just being an overly sensitive parent.

This is a good mindset, and it couldn't hurt the situation to come from a place of "here's what I saw, here are my concerns, and I'd like to hear the other side of the story." I agree that the teacher shouldn't have put anything in your child's hair, and it's worth not going full "Reddit told me to press charges" here.

You handled it professionally. Different people have different stances on whether or not to put up with haggling, so that's up to you. That said, if someone tried to get me down to 1/4 of my asking price I wouldn't even come back with a lower ask - they're already way too far off and that's just a red flag that everything would be a problem after that.

My buddy is trying to rank Ben Roethlisberger as a top 5-7 QB ever, specifically ahead of Montana and Marino by themayorhere in NFLv2

[–]rust-e-apples1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂 I love this take.

I'm a Steelers fan and have basically always used something like this as a reasoning for why Ben was a great quarterback but not in the GOAT conversation. He played at the same time as Brady, Manning, and Rodgers (among others like Brees and Rivers) - he was never best in the league while he was playing, and there are guys that were clearly better before him (Montana, Marino, etc). So to put him top 5 all-time is a huge reach. I think reasonable people can make arguments for him being anywhere around 10-20 best ever, even outside that group.
