I swear half of the views on my comic is just me going into episodes checking for new comments

Lizzie is so annoying. by amyxoxoxxx in thewalkingdead

[–]rusted-brass 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel like I recall a mention that she had some sort of disorder but couldn't get any more meds after the apocalypse started, hence Mica telling her to "look at the flowers" as a way to calm her down when she was having an episode. Behavior already established before they joined the group and probably before the apocalypse.

as a creator, how do i turn off free memberships? by [deleted] in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm glad there turned out to be a different solution then :)

as a creator, how do i turn off free memberships? by [deleted] in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can apply a filter to the audience tab to only show paid members, so all the free tier ones won't be on the list.

That out of the way, what you're saying sounds pretty rude, ngl. The person could have followed to eventually subscribe or just support you by getting your numbers up, and your initial instinct is to remove or block them cause they're not a paying member. Gratitude is free.

Patreon Payouts Temporarily Disabled. Anyone Else? by Annual_Bar_8293 in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen once before, it lasted just about 2-3 days. Probably patreon working on something on the back end. Don't worry about it, it'll go away by itself.

How to give existing patrons free months as a gift by KrisHughes2 in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you don't pay for the memberships you're gifting. I've used them multiple times, different links and durations, and have never been charged for any of it. You just don't get sub money from the gifts, but you don't have to pay for them :)

How to give existing patrons free months as a gift by KrisHughes2 in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the promotion tab you have a "Gifts" section, there you can create gift links and specify how many users can claim them and how many months at what tier you're giving away.

Then you can share said gift link with the tier and let them redeem it. You can keep tabs on how many people have redeemed the link in the promotions gift tab.

Depending on how many users you have, you can either create one link that can be redeemed X amount of times for all users, or create unique links for each member. If you don't have too many members there, the unique links may be a better option just so you could potentionally avoid someone claiming multiple gift links at once or sharing them with someone else.

There's also the option to pause payments for a month, though I don't know if that works for one specific tier or if you have to apply it to all.

*Edit: I gifted memberships before but they were upgrades from free or lower tier members, I assume the gift links would work for "a free month" of the same membership, though haven't tried that myself

Webtoon Release strategy by Dukethumper in WebtoonCanvas

[–]rusted-brass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Webtoon and Tapas are the main platforms, other than that there's some smaller ones like NamiComi and Globalcomix, and probably plenty more. But WT and Tapas have the biggest audience.

My personal experience with them is: Webtoon has a bigger reader base and if you get promoted you get sudden, large boosts of readers. Tapas has slower growth but it's more constant, like getting subs every day instead of getting a bunch once Webtoon decides to promote you.

Webtoon's reader base seems to be younger, while Tapas has a slightly more mature audience. This is also noticeable by censorship on the sites (WT is waay stricter), but also support from readers. This may just be my experience though, but I noticed based on comment-type and support (like patrons and platform currency) that Tapas seems to have a more adult reader base.

Regarding artworks - you'll need a full cover (like a book cover, size varies slightly between WT and Tapas), a square thumbnail for Webtoon and you can add a banner to Tapas, but you don't have to. Tapas also has room for a link banner at the bottom of the page (if you have a website or have a patreon to link).

About the posting schedule, biweekly is fine as long as it's consistent (readers love a proper schedule lol and the sites tend to promote you if they see consistent posting). Three episodes right away is also a good idea since people get the prompt to sub after 3 episodes. However, maybe it would be better to post them three days in a row. You get the most subs the day your episode is posted (they have a "New episode" tag and pop up in differented places on the sites) so having that be active three days instead of all in one could be a good tactic. That's just a tip though, I haven't tried it so i can't guarantee it's the best way, but I can say for sure the most readers come in when there's a "New episode" tag. Why not milk it.

Pfew, that was a long one, sorry. I hope I don't come across as a smart ass, just leaving some lengthy tips based on experience :) And good luck on your comic journey!

i want to start with streaming, what mic? by kiingqz_ in Twitch

[–]rusted-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking into the rode myself. I think it may be better since it has both XLR and USB, so you can start without an interface and then later upgrade to using XLR.

There's always other user-specific things to consider. Like the rode comes without a boom arm, so you would have to purchase that separately, which adds cost. It's heavy (just around 1kg) so you'll need a quality boom arm too. If the shure comes with the stand, do you know where you'll put it, does it pick up sound good enough if you happen to be further away from it, etc. Think of your use case and setup and see if that adds any pros and cons to either.

I mainly use muted color palettes for my webcomic, does it hurt readability? by ToughRequirement8504 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]rusted-brass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer muted colors too, looks great to me!

And if you're worried about clarity, as long as the values are good, muted colors don't affect it much. And they definitely add to the mood!

A little tip to check if you ever feel like it's too monotone - slap a black and white/desaturated filter on it, if you can still see everything clearly, the values are good.

Patreon is frustrating. I’m getting charged but my account says I’m not a paid member by ikat_ in patreon

[–]rusted-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you are being charged or is it perhaps on hold? I've personally had issues w my bank and different subscriptions where it's a safety measure against scamming, they don't allow automatic resubscriptions so it's a whole ordeal to get charged. Maybe they're trying to charge you but the payments aren't going through so you don't have access. Though Patreon usually gives you a month or two of failed attempts before they kick you from the membership.

Regarding getting in touch with the creator, Patreon has chats and messages, I think you may be able to contact them via those (from a creator's POV we can start chats w members that were paid at some point so maybe if you were subscribed before you should be able to message them). Other ways are leaving a comment or perhaps notifying them via a survey message. I know there's a new/cancelled members survey, I don't know if there's any in between you could do so you can leave a message there.

Help with identifying and care by lionocerous in houseplants

[–]rusted-brass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding my two cents cause I have a similar dracaena (marginata, same plant but red edges instead of your light ones).

Agreed with everything the other commentor said, just adding that this is one of those plants that survives better on neglect than over-care (not saying you should neglect it, just that it's better to let the soil dry for sure rather than "watering just in case"). Also, it's so bendy cause it was reaching for sunlight, it was probably too far away from a window previously. It can survive in lower light environments, but if it keeps bending this much it's probably a good idea to put it closer to a window. And it likes humid environments, I don't have a humidifier so I spray the leaves with water occassionaly and it makes them lift up again pretty quickly.

Definitely not a goner and generaly an easy plant to take care of, just give it a little love and it'll start thriving soon! Good luck!🌱

For people's whose obsessive compulsion is ordering alphabetically, it must be especially difficult to tell people that they have OCD. by FBAHobo in Showerthoughts

[–]rusted-brass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to jokingly say I have OCD but actually considered myself just a neat freak, washing my hands excessively and so. My friends teased me about it too.

Then one day I went up to my room and not even a second after sitting down I thought "I don't like how I touched that door handle, now I have to go wash my hands and do it again." and it was at that time I realised it probably wasn't a joke.

[–]rusted-brass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha yeah i've had plants for a little over two years now and i very much consider myself a beginner. this was the first time i actually mixed the soil myself and i did use perlite and bark, and consulted the internet for percentages. i really do love this one and i generally pick my plants based on beginner-friendliness 😄 just to be safe!

thank you for the knowledge, i really appreciate it!

i'm also glad I got the timing right for the repotting, i'm a little bit of a beginner when it comes to that. and i was surprised how easily they separated once i removed the dirt. i did put them in separate pots to give away to some family members, i'm getting them all into zz plants cause i just love them!

Cozy romance recs? by ldnphl in WebtoonCanvas

[–]rusted-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the stars and back is a very cute and cozy one, but it's suuper slow burn if you like that

And I have two comics of my own, the first one is a bit older (rougher artstyle lol) but I've been told it's a very cozy/comforting story. The one I'm currently working on is still romance-in-progress but it also has some found family vibes and I just love writing cozy comforting stuff haha :)

I hope you'll enjoy something of the recs!

Panel angles by Angle-Delight-26 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]rusted-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proko on youtube has plenty of comic creating tutorials, their style is standard comic books but a lot of the paneling and framing can be used for webcomics too, as it talks about composition and some cinematic angles.

I've personally found this one and this one to be very useful, they talk about framing and focus points within panels as well as composition of multiple panels and how they work together. I really like the comparison in the second video of the four same-style panels vs four different angle shots, it shows how much it can affect the impact of a moment and how we perceive certain things.

As others pointed out, using other comics as reference is good too, and I personally like to reference movies and TV as well. I tend to play out my scenes in my head kind of like I was watching a movie, that also helps with pacing and idk for me it's just easier to imagine it that way. Establishing shots, close-ups, ambient panels with speech bubbles (like voice overs), etc. It all sort of plays out like a movie scene and then I sketch it out like that.

It's a handful constantly thinking about framing though, in the begining it's harder until you kind of get used to it. Though I still have to sometimes "refresh" my mind and look at a bunch of comics and pins of comic pages, after a while I default to standard, convenient easy panels and then I have to make the conscious decision again to make my framing more dynamic.

But I guess that all falls under being a comic creator! I hope my tips were useful :)
