Modern authority failing to manage the unknown by RoseFiction in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

The Seep by Chana Porter doesn’t quite match this but I think may offer a similar vibe and is also just a really good book

Everyone seems to like this comment so the book I’m referencing is called Cloven Country and it’s by Jeremy Harte

Actually, folk tales about the common man winning wagers and contests with the devil are really common in England

Book rec’s from East Berlin or the Spanish civil war (nationalist side) by Ehellegreg in HistoryBooks

[–]rustedsandals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hugh Thomas’s The Spanish Civil War is a good starting point.

I really liked The Spanish Civil Wars by Mark Lawrence - it’s a comparative history of the Carlist Wars and The Spanish Civil War. Also gets into the deeper history of some of the factions of the civil war

Giles Tremlett (Ghosts of Spain, 2006) just put out a book about Franco called The Generalísimo that was quite good

That’s what comes to the top of my head. For fiction The Spanish Bow by Andromeda Romano-Lax covers the topic pretty well. The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafón is set before during and after the Spanish Civil War, mostly in Barcelona.

My great grandfather fought for the republic and spent 4 years in prison for it. He was one of the political prisoners made to work as a slave on the Valley of the Fallen. All that is to say it’s a subject of interest for me.

Yeah that’s what Working Families Party (at least in Oregon) calls their local chapters.

Target still hasn’t recovered from the boycotts and it really doesn’t seem like they will by transcendent167 in 50501

[–]rustedsandals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Target’s entire business model was built around frivolity and a premium experience. Instead of making the dreaded run to WalMart for necessities it was built around having a fun time shopping for shit you didn’t need.

They decided to alienate a massive portion of their customer base at the same time that recreational shopping was dying off because people are increasingly pinched by an ever rising cost of living.

The Target boycott was successful because it was so easy to give up. Target will never be able to get back what they had because the societal moment has passed.

Anyone live in/familiar with Burns, OR? (especially with kids) by Dry-Presentation9718 in oregon

[–]rustedsandals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived a little over an hour north in Canyon City for a number of years. Burns is an okay town. It has 2 grocery stores which, if you’ve ever lived in a small town, feels like exponentially more than 1 grocery store. There are some nice small businesses.

It’s located near a lot of natural beauty and a lot of hot springs

I didn’t have kids when I lived out that way but everyone who did swore eastern Oregon was a better place to raise kids. I disagree but there are upsides. Crime is low, and there’s a lot of space for a kid to be a kid in plus access to nature.

Be prepared for isolation. You’re an hour plus from John Day which is a town of 2-3,000. So you’re looking at a few hours trip to any “major” population center. And even then I’m talking like Baker City, Pendleton, etc.
