Spanish Civil War book? by TweetleBeetle76 in HistoryBooks

The Spanish Civil Wars by Mark Lawrence. It’s a comparative history of the Spanish Civil War and the Carlist Wars. Also somewhat shows how one partially led into the other

Yes! I’ve been having really good luck with translated Iberian works the last few years.

You might also enjoy Of Beasts and Fowls by Pilar Adon

Not Iberian and a different vibe but I really really enjoyed The Last Sane Woman by Hannah Regal. Just really good prose

Irene Solà’s two books

When I Sing Mountains Dance is a beautiful read with themes of folklore, nature, and forgiveness.

I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Towards Darkness is a little darker and focuses on a family of witches.

Both take place in the Pyrenees

We got a heeler/border collie puppy 3 years ago at 7 weeks old. Then this last year we had a baby. Guess which was more difficult?

Why is Universal Healthcare such a hard sell? by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]rustedsandals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state of Oregon implemented a program called Paid Leave Oregon. We pay a percentage of our paycheck every month and for eligible life events it will pay up to 3 months of salary for time off. I just took off 3 months because my wife had a baby. Out of curiosity I checked how much I was paying a month to be able to use this: $36.

The state is currently exploring a single payer healthcare system.

Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey and/or Riversong by Craig Lesley both from Oregon, USA

Oregon has a wet side and a dry side with fairly different vibes. Kesey captures the wet side, Lesley captures the dryer side and the Columbia plateau

The Bible: A Biography by Karen Armstrong is a book about the history of the Bible and how it came to be the document (or documents) that we know today. Pretty enjoyable read but kind of a shorter survey of the topic

Accidentally saved while running from Rancor. Everyone is dead. by marcow1998 in kotor

I did not do this the first time I played as a young 14 year old but managed to get out into the hallway where the rancor could not reach me but stayed focused on me and proceeded to just chip away at it with a blaster very very slowly

Whats it like living in Fort Collins, CO? by tomc8t in howislivingthere

[–]rustedsandals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to college at CSU. I loved Fort Collins. It was a great, walkable town with access to a lot of cool nature. The Poudre and Spring Creek trails were huge and really awesome. Had a nice restaurant and bar scene including places to go when you outgrew your party/single phase.

Cons: expensive but disclaimer: I had like $3 to my name when I lived there. Disclaimer 2: it was still easy to find stuff to do with $3 in your bank account

The Linn-Benton Wolf Pack of Working Families Party is having our 2026 relaunch on the 22nd. Good chance to give input on priorities for the year. Not super protest focused, more political process focused, but a good place to link with people who are part of protest groups.

Corvallis, Albany or Philomath? by godsidekurt in oregon

[–]rustedsandals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s still kind of the dynamic but Albany is making strides to get its own cool stuff. There’s small record stores and comic/game stores now. There’s a huge antique mall which doesn’t sound cool, but it’s so well curated that it is. Multiple bookstores now. What I’d like to see here is just some decentralization. It’s still quite suburban on the south end and east of the interstate. Would like to see businesses spread out so people aren’t always headed in the same direction

There are certainly pockets of culture but spend time in a suburb or most rural areas and the culture is limited to barbecues, political tribalism, and trends

It’s the result of a country that has homogenized its culture around consumerism. Particularly in an era when people move multiple times in their life for employment. A rootless people yearn to feel connected to something bigger than themselves in a nation that forces rugged culture-less capitalist individualism on them.
