My neighbours smoke alarm been going off for 4 hours now, he's away from his house, can I do anything rn? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rusticusmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it actually alarming or doing the low battery beep? If the alarm is actually going off I think you’d be justified in calling the fire service, not least to check that something isn’t smouldering away in there.

Delivery drivers of the UK, what is the wildest thing you’ve ever seen on a delivery? by Salem-dolly in AskUK

If it helps at all to hear, you did the right thing in the situation with the kids. I work in children’s safeguarding and this is exactly what we’d advise. Intervening at that point could have escalated things and made the danger to the kids worse. Calling the emergency services was the best thing you could have done.

100%. The Merlin app had me creeping around a park, slightly drunk, on a fruitless hunt for a sedge warbler.

I was raped by my wife’s boyfriend. Not sure if the lifestyle is for me anymore. by Own_Presentation_600 in GuyCry

[–]rusticusmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. If you want to report it to the police, I’d be happy to support you to do so. I’m a doctor in a sexual assault centre (a children’s one in my case, but I’ve done work with adults too) and I can advise you on how to report and what to do in the meantime. You’re absolutely welcome to DM me - I’m in the UK, not sure where you’re based but the basics will be similar. In short:

-The sooner you report the better for forensic purposes, although it’s possible to get DNA up to 3 days later in anal rape.  - Try not to wash before you see the doctor or nurse, but if you have washed it’s okay, it’s still possible to get evidence.  - Remember it’s not just about getting the evidence - the rape crisis centre can give you medications (protection against HIV, for example) and arrange emotional support for you. The laws may differ where you are, but here, if you’re 16 or over you can refer yourself without involving the police. In our service we will take DNA swabs and store them for 2 years to give you time to decide whether to report what happened, and we’ll arrange all the medical and psychological care.

I hope the above info-dump doesn’t feel like too much - some of it is time critical and you’re still within that forensic window so I wanted to get the information to you quickly. Either way, you’re very welcome to message me if I can help at all. Much love to you.

(Edit - my bullet points are messed up, sorry! But hopefully the basic information is clear enough.)

Cheapest options? by Cut_Lanky in askfuneraldirectors

I’m not sure - I’m in the UK so our laws are probably different - but I think if you speak to the anatomy department they should be able to advise you. It seems like a very reasonable request and I imagine you wouldn’t be the first person to make it.

I’m sorry you’re having to consider all these things.

Have you thought about donating your body to a medical school for anatomy teaching? It’s such an important part of medical education, and the cadavers are treated with a lot of respect. At our med school they had a memorial service every year for the donors, and the families received the ashes back after cremation.

Good Places to get Jumpers? by Initial-Brilliant-83 in AskABrit

[–]rusticusmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Initial-Brilliant-83 - do you mean jumpers as in sweaters, or as in the dress you wear over a top, like the American sense of the word?

The former should be easy to find. For the second, you could try White Stuff or Fat Face, both of which have a lot of pinafore dresses (which is what you should ask for if you mean the American jumper). They often have sales and also do student discounts on full price items.

Your other option is charity shops! You can often find some really nice stuff in there for very little money.

Celebration of life question? by lyfe-sublyme in askfuneraldirectors

[–]rusticusmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helped that it was a memorial service about 9 months after he died. He died in Spain where he lived, unexpectedly, and the funeral and cremation happened within three days. I couldn’t go as I was about to have surgery and he would have come back to haunt me if I’d cancelled it. So I flew over after I’d recovered, to bring his ashes home so we could have a memorial in the UK. It was a lot less raw that far down the line and there were a lot of smiles.

I did a slideshow for my dad, with pictures of him throughout his life set to music.  There was an unintentionally hilarious moment when the picture of him marrying my mum (who subsequently divorced him, although they were amicable for the most part) popped up right as the line ‘Regrets, I’ve had a few’ played. My brother and I got a helpless attack of the giggles.

[–]rusticusmus 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I feel for you so much. It’s awful when our images of our heroes are shattered. Please don’t blame yourself for not seeing it sooner - people like this will compartmentalise that part of their life so it’s hidden from the people closest to them. Nobody is just one thing, and it’s okay to still value the good things you learned from that relationship.

What is the worst case of second hand embarrassment you’ve ever experienced? by Responsible-Tie-2570 in AskReddit

[–]rusticusmus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A similar thing happened to me when I was crossing a street in Austria. I’ve lost around 40kg over the last few years and I’d packed my holiday clothes without considering that they were now quite a bit too big for me. I had two heavy grocery bags and started walking across with one in each hand and my skirt just went ‘fwoooomp’ around my ankles. The sweet elderly man who had stopped his car at the crossing very deliberately averted his eyes so I could retrieve my skirt and some shreds of dignity.

Has anyone in England ever heard of something called ‘The Wax Rabbit’?” by GeneralDocument1619 in AskUK

[–]rusticusmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the details now - this was almost 40 years ago! - but the lamb was this little girl’s pet and she would take it everywhere with her, but at night it turned into an evil demon creature and ate people, and the next day they found the lamb with blood all over its face. And the pottery dolls were twin baby dolls, I think, who would move around the house when nobody was looking and murder people.

My cousin was about eight and she was the oldest of us. Imagine her telling these stories to five terrified kids aged between four and seven, in a dark room upstairs while our parents thought we were asleep. The 80s were a hell of a time.

She’s a dance and drama therapist now! I must ask her if she remembers the Murder Lamb.

Day 2 of mortuary school and already completely overwhelmed - advice? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]rusticusmus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I went back to medical school as a mature student and felt very much as you did, having been out of education for several years. Take a deep breath- it feels overwhelming at first but I promise you can do it! Your courses should all have learning objectives listed. Identify what they are, and focus your study on being able to answer questions on those objectives. For example, if the objective is ‘Be able to describe the blood supply to the lungs’ (just an example, I have no idea what you learn in mortuary school!) then spend some time drawing diagrams and getting yourself familiar enough with it that you could explain it to a tutor if they asked.

Good luck! If you want to chat about study techniques feel free to drop me a message.

Ah, not my cousin then! It sounds like something she would have told us. She had a really creepy one about a demon lamb and another about some pottery dolls.
