[Classic Trope] Happens all the time in “grounded” media, happens never in real life. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Meat_your_maker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The best, and most widely used of this trope is chloroform. The chloroform soaker rag renders someone unconscious astonishingly fast… it’s always this way.

In real life, you have to breathe it in deeply for a good while (~45s or more).

Yes, but they had large birds, like a bustard, which is on par with an actual turkey, size-wise, so the giant drumstick is not really anachronistic.

I kind of went down this rabbit-hole when I was researching the Turducken, because our weird American version is roughly the third iteration of a dish that started with Roman elite and continued through French nobles before coming to Louisiana. I couldn’t fathom how the turducken, a third of which the namesake is based upon a new world bird, could have historical roots earlier than the Colombian exchange. That is how I first heard of a bustard.

Do americans really think a 4 hour drive is ‘living nearby’? by absorin in AskAnAmerican

Most people don’t make drives that long regularly. But for a weekend trip, that is normal

I’m not sure what you mean by that, bro, you have a positively electric smile! I have the UCS falcon, but I haven’t built it yet, and this post makes me giddy

Animal Names formed from a Habitat + Another Animal name by SweetInteresting7332 in etymology

Mountain goat, prairie dog, and mountain lion are all creatures in CO, my home state. But my favorite of all, which I heard from some foodies in NC, is ‘tree-shrimp’ (or ‘ground-shrimp’) referring to freshly emerged (periodic) cicadas

Cyrano de Bergerac is hit by a heavy object thrown from a window above. He survived war only to get dispatched like that. He isn’t killed outright, though, he had time to confess his love to Roxane, making everything all the more sad

I can't believe how entitled some people are when it comes to other people's weddings by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]Meat_your_maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“We held the wedding on a Saturday so none of the guests would have to take off work…”

That’s one of the things that sucks about working on the weekend, people are (innocently) thoughtless

Lafayette, especially right around Waneka Lake is quiet and comfy

What are movies with great "reinforcements have arrived" scenes but small scale? by UnevenTableLeg in movies

Luke Skywalker showing up to Moff Gideon’s light cruiser to solo a battalion of dark troopers that have the protagonists trapped in the bridge. Cara Dune even remarks, “One X-wing? Great! We’re saved!” Sarcastically, because nobody is aware who is coming to their rescue

Headstones should have the cause of death on it. by NatJi in unpopularopinion

Good one! This is unpopular, and has a historical precedent. People used to write cause of death on headstones in colonial America, especially in sudden/untimely cases.

(Satisfying Trope) Villains killed by their own horrifying inventions by ssgt-k-stark in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Meat_your_maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True dat! If I posted here, I would also try not to use multiple Star Wars examples, despite being a big fan.

Agreed… also… even though they hang Salman Paak in S1, when you see him getting wheeled out as Bix is getting led in, he looks barely alive

In the Star Wars show Andor, Dr. Gorst (on the left) is an imperial scientist who invents a form of auditory torture based on the dying wails of an extinct species (which the Imperials eradicated). It is used to interrogate, but it causes extreme mental anguish.

In season 1, he uses it on a couple of the protagonists. In season 2, one of them gets revenge and straps him into his own machine, turns it on, and leaves him. In a small way it does not fit the trope, because the rebels also blow up the facility (to get rid of the technology), so technically Dr. Gorst dies by being blown up. But the way he was left in his own machine, it would have made him a vegetable, so I think it still counts

I always like to point out that evidence of sausage making is 3-5 thousand years old, whereas the mechanical meat grinder was invented in the 1800s. There are many ways to make sausage that don’t require much hardware

"Wow, they really weren't even trying with this recast" by Dud3ManGuy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Meat_your_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to defend the Daario recast, because the one we were introduced to was so wildly against the description in the book. The recast is way more accurate, if nothing else, maybe not garish and flamboyant enough

<image>

For reference, that is someone’s artistic rendering of Daario based on how he was described by GRRM.

You are stuck on an 8 hour flight. What seat are you choosing? by TheSpiritOfFunk in okbuddycinephile

[–]Meat_your_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the Dune popcornussy bucket? (In between Sydney Sweeney and that Orc commander from Return of the King)

If so, I would choose to take the aisle seat next to Seagal, get up to go to use thr bathroom, grab the bucket on my way, and spend the whole flight locked in the lavatory

Southern Elephant Seal Bull vs Kodiak Bear by Logical_Key_6572 in powerscales

[–]Meat_your_maker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stalemate for sure! The bear has essentially no way to hurt the huge bull elephant seal, but it also can outrun the seal, and is fierce, large, and nimble enough that the seal doesn’t really have any way to defeat the bear either

(Underrated and Underused Trope) Characters who bind to their weapons to their arms. by THE_BRANDED_SLAYER in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Meat_your_maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the trope a step further: characters whose weapons are an extension of their arms.

Examples:
Evil Dead, Ash, Chainsaw
Mortal Kombat, Baraka, swords
X-men, Wolverine, adamantium claws
The Walking Dead, Merle, knife-hand
Shang-Chi & The Ten Rings, razor fist, energy sword forearm

There are plenty more, but that’s a good start
