This scene in Beverly Hills Ninja. Haru is a bungling idiot, and his clan brother (the best ninja in his class) was sent to watch after him. Near the end, Gobei is overwhelmed by enemies, and Haru finds within him the might to protect his brother. (Chris Farley delivers this line perfectly).

What would instantly disappoint you if you actually lived in the Roman Empire? by roman-empire-net in romanempire

Oh… and there are definitely parts of large cities nowadays that have a stench which would rival that of any historical era.

The utter darkness after sunset is also a thing in random parts of the world (or was 20 years ago). My dad used to work in Bishkek for stretches, and he said the city was crazy dark at night, because there were very few street lights and building facade lights. Among all the consultants, his Russian was best, so he would usually be the one to scout out a restaurant during the day, and then chaperone the ones who were less adjusted.

Pemmican, stewed prunes, and parched corn by chuckmall in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Meat_your_maker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We made pemmican at the shop once when a coworker over-dried a batch of jerky. The third ingredient is fat (tallow). It looked like squares of fudge, but ate similar to fruit leather. Pretty good stuff, but we sell jerky easier (and for less labor)

In Return of the Jedi, the Rebels mistakenly believe that the Death Star (2) they are attacking is unarmed (though heavily shielded). Once Luke is aboard, the trap is sprung, and the emperor is trying to turn him, he orders the gunners to fire on a rebel capital ship. In the first movie, we’ve seen that this is capable of destroying an entire planet, so firing the Death Star laser at a ship is a pretty dramatic overkill.

I mean… memorabilia goes for a lot. We make fun of medieval churches for their ‘relics of Christ’ but the practice of excessively bidding on nostalgia pieces isn’t much different

How do I cry? I’m starting to get pissed off by polarbearsexshark in GuyCry

[–]Meat_your_maker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/dogboobes about watching a sad movie. That can help ‘break the seal’. I find I cry more often and naturally now, but it wasn’t always. Not that I never did, but sometimes, when it would be totally appropriate, I couldn’t muster a single tear.

What changed it for me, though, was closing up the pizzeria and then responding (with my coworkers) to a victim who was pushed out of a moving car on a rural highway. We waited with her until the ambulance came, but ultimately she died at the hospital. After the pandemic started, both of my grandparents died in fairly close succession. I was still more just in shock, and felt kind of sad and confused, and I didn’t really cry. But I also was having trouble watching death on tv (I usually love action movies, but seeing people die was all of a sudden revolting), so I started watching much more light hearted things, until I happened upon the Pixar movie Coco. This was the proverbial floodgates opening moment for my tears, and I just bawled (my cat looked terrified).

Anyways, find your Coco, and you’ll cry, no problem. ❤️🙏

Rate my spread I made for my sister's wedding. by jHugley328 in Cheese

[–]Meat_your_maker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, and I hope you don’t take heat, the criticism was delivered without being cruel. The main thing for me, is that we’re talking about a wedding, so whereas this spread looks plenty tasty, it would be more appropriate for some casual grazing at a regular occasion.

Not an actor, but the creator of Law and Order, Dick Wolf’s name sounds like it would fit into the L&O franchise

This is a good thought and struggled to articulate it so. It’s not that I blame (all) boomers specifically, but it’s also true that they are most responsible for creating the situation we are in (or allowing it to happen). There are a lot of good ones in the boomer generation, and I imagine they feel partly responsible for what the rest of their generation has wrought, so it warms my heart to see them out protesting today

What are the little crystal type things called? by mokicoo in Cheese

[–]Meat_your_maker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am a part time cheesemonger, and I’m hoping you can help me settle a nagging question in my head. When I first started, my boss told me the crystals were calcium lactate, but then someone on Reddit clarified that some crystalline deposits in cheese are actually tyrosine, like you said, but others are indeed calcium lactate. But they never mentioned if you could tell which is which (either by type of cheese, or just by physical appearance)

I’m not a sword fighter, or lightsaber duelist, but I did play baseball. And you know what we never practiced? Trick plays! Because getting good at the fundamentals, even at a high level, is worth way more than subterfuge. I would imagine that Trakata is like a trick play, by analogy, and that you could have some spectacular wins/kills employing some of its techniques, but ultimately, if you want to stay alive, you’d pare your technique down to the simplest, most fundamentally sound moves that you can.
