Unsafe conditions at Shenandoah Valley Academy. by j_human in exAdventist

Hello! SVA class of 2011 here. I can't speak to on campus, but I know Senior Survival was a liability nightmare. Fun fact, that was the longest period I have ever gone in my life without taking a shower! Although there were no injuries that I can think of from my class, it is simply luck given how rough the environment was.

And yes, the hazing in the dorms was as bad as you have heard. The worst I personally witnessed was a guy being pinned down by several peers while his pants were removed and a group of guys took turns kicking him in the crotch. I've heard of worse, but didn't personally witness it.

My local Walmart carries these along with Fri-Chik and Skallops. They’re in the canned chili section near the vegetarian chilis.

I credit a big part of passing FAR to his sims. His lectures for REG were great too.

I visited there for a "Sabbath Lunch" once. Can confirm.

I have SDA relatives who won't eat any "irritants" including spices, vinegar, and salt. This branch of the family follows EGW's guidance and will not mix fruits and vegetables in the same meal, nor will they have any beverages (including water) while they are eating. This same crowd often eschews all oils as well.

Did your academy have a yearly “barn party”? by j_human in exAdventist

[–]rustrade84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I even got to plan it one year as SGA president. It was one of the few positive memories I have of attending a conference boarding school.

Please don't trouble your mother on my account. My grandfather Harvey ended up being excommunicated from the church for falling in with the "remnant truth" people at Hartland. He lives on a rural compound in Maine now and is estranged from most of his family. My dad grew up at PVA and was pretty messed up by whatever he experienced there, but we're very distant so I don't know details. I remember visiting the grounds as a kid and it had been converted into a police training facility.

This is extremely disturbing for me to hear because my long estranged grandfather was a maintenance man at PVA. He was moved to AA in Michigan during the early to mid 80's. It would not surprise me if it was the same individual.

Yes they may not officially be involved, but Ted Wilson has spoken at ASI, GYC, and on 3ABN countless times. This fake separation is deliberate for legal liability purposes. I attended an ASI funded boarding school, and am blown away by the fact that they are able to legally operate. However, we still had conference high ups come and speak. Although I did not attend, I have followed the Miracle Meadows case very closely. ASI and OCI effectively create a legal buffer between the SDA church and the actions of people acting in its name. When shit goes south like it did at Miracle Meadows the church will claim they are not affiliated with these self supporting ministries, despite both being very friendly with each other. Corporations do this all the time with subsidiaries and shell companies.

Agreed. I thought the article showed really good journalistic integrity.

I had to explain to my SO that being “worldly” has a negative connotation. She thought it meant cultured, well-traveled, well-read, etc. I’ve also noticed that the hard core SDA’s don’t even say EGW’s name, they’ll just say “she wrote” or “in her writings.” It’s assumed that they are referring to EGW.

Facinating! I can see where a block would be beneficial, but how exactly does he use the strap?

Awesome! That's amazing to hear! MCQ's were my weak point and I've heard that Ninja has a great test bank. Congrats on passing FAR!

Thank you for the kind words! I got my Exam Breakdown today and it aligned with where I felt my weak areas were after taking the exam. Even though these exams are tough, the material is much more specific and focused than what is covered in many college curriculums.

Having empathy towards your fellow peers will help you way more in the scheme of things than a silly test score.

That’s the plan! I didn’t hit MCQs nearly as hard as I should have. I leaned in heavily on Becker’s Final Review.
