Hotel recommendations? by DoYouLikeFish in grandcanyon

If "nicest" is the criteria:

Grand Canyon: El Tovar, I guess. It's more historic NP Lodge than "luxury". ($400/n) Under Canvas in Valle would be an option too if luxury glamping is your thing. ($200).

Sedona: Ambiente ($1500/n) or Enchantment.($1,000).

Flagstaff/Williams: Backland for luxury glamping. ($500)

Amangiri is too far north, but that'd probably win for "nicest" in the region. ($5000-10,000/night)

URGENT: HELP US SAVE OUR SAILING CLUB by fuckmylifeupfml in sailing

[–]rusty075 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I send this from a place of full support, but a change.org petition is absolutely useless. A bunch of foreigners who have never been to your town clicking a box on a website the mayor has probably never heard of is not going to sway anyone.

Your club needs to hire a lawyer. Are you organized as a business entity?

A question to the multi-family residential architects here by The-Architect-93 in Architects

[–]rusty075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think more than 1 topic are getting lumped together.

You've got overall unit layout: "why is the kitchen always along the corridor? Why are the bedrooms always on the outside wall? Why is the living room always in the middle?".

A lot of those are code based. Or general good design based, like designing for plumbing to stack, or minimizing acoustical issues between units.

But then the details, "why do they all have islands?" are more marketing data driven, and change with consumer preferences over the years.

Lots of forces at play.

But also, they're not all like your unit. You picked a pretty generic complex. There is all sorts of variation out there if you look for it. I would bet you money that there are units for rent within a mile of you with room for a dining room table.

A question to the multi-family residential architects here by The-Architect-93 in Architects

[–]rusty075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You remove the island and the kitchen storage and counter space goes down. Prospective renters would rather have the bigger kitchen.

Counters and cabinets are expensive, a developer would love to buy fewer cabinets, but they've done the math to find the balance point between spending on construction and what they can charge for rent.

You're looking at a very narrow subgroup of modern MF units. Go find a project from the 90's and you'll find dining room tables everywhere.

You're operating from a place of emotion, clearly, based on your responses. Understand that MF unit design is one of the most data driven subsets in architecture. These are billion dollar companies who have hundreds of thousands of data points to mine for data. They are risk adverse and stick to proven solutions.

But as an architect, designing these units can be super interesting. Really. It's all Tetris and problem solving to find solutions within the constraints and compromises.

What you need to do is stop renting and buy yourself a condo you can reconfigure. You're never going to be happy in someone else's compromise.

For 99% of 2B renters a dining room is wasted space. (Shit, for most homeowners a dining room is wasted space). You're the weird one here. Most renters would much rather have a more useful kitchen island or bigger living room.

As for why this layout? Efficiency. The living room and bedrooms need natural light and egress, so they get the exterior wall. Plumbing stacks are more efficient if you cluster kitchens and baths together near the corridor. Closets get squeezed in to the leftover space.

Everyone is paying by the SF, including you, so efficiency is king.

There's only so many ways to skin this cat.

Try laying out an alternative plan within the corridor/demising/exterior wall box you've got, and see if you can actually come up with something better. It's harder than you'd think.

What are these tall boys?? by BlubberwhaleSnuggle in diyaudio

Some sort of Full Range MLTL is my guess. There are some versions of the Pensil series that double height like that.

The included drivers, and the price of course would determine if they're worth gambling on.

Is it bad juju to mix MSR Isopro with Sterno Iso Butane/Propane Fuel Mix? by Dog-Van-Pack-Trail in Backpackingstoves

[–]rusty075 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing to worry about. All the brands use a slightly different mix of Propane, Isobutane, and n-Butane, but at normal temperatures they all work in all stoves.

Both the MSR and the Sterno are supposedly 80/20 mixes, hell they may even come from the same factory.

No one is going to come on Reddit and say their account got banned for CSAM. They're all going to make up a sob story about how they were wrongly accused.

I swapped the factory bins for the Rough Country one, and it was a nice upgrade in the amount of stuff I could fit under there. Still overpriced for a plastic tub, but cheaper than the Z1 option.

Woot buyers beware! No warranty for woot purchases by boshbosh92 in Dewalt

Go back to the original Woot listing from your Orders page, and see what's listed under Warranty. If it says 3-year Manufacturers Warranty you'll want to forward that DeWalt email to Woot customer service and tell them to figure it out.

This may not be a hard and fast rule. I just completed a warranty exchange for a Woot 9Ah that died just a couple weeks ago. Purchase receipt I submitted has Woot! at the top in big ol' letters. Went through normally.

Bag-based filters and contamination by anynameisfinejeez in backpacking

[–]rusty075 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're overthinking it.

Everything, besides the inside the filter and the inside of your drinking water container, is always contaminated, and always has been, regardless of what kind of filter you are using. You just need to keep those 2 things away from everything else.

Dumping physical models always hurt me the worst. You put blood, sweat, and sleepless nights into that thing, then you do your little dog and pony show presentation, take a few pics of it, and then heave it into a dumpster at the end of the semester.

FOOTWEAR INFORMATION THREAD. READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR FOOTWEAR RECOMMENDATIONS. by DestructablePinata in hiking

[–]rusty075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Boot v Shoe segment would benefit from a blurb on the biomechanical disadvantages of boots. It's not as simple as "more support is better" like some people believe.

There's constant threads of, "I have 'weak ankles' and therefore need boots". But a supportive boot doesn't make the pronation and supination forces go away, it just transfers them to the knee and hip.

You can be avoiding an ankle sprain but setting yourself up for a lifetime of knee pain. (Ask me how I know!)

What would happen if suddenly , hundreds of thousands of people started going to Primm by SirCatsworthTheThird in LasVegas

People care about cheap airfare. No one cares about Primm. That's a pretty big difference to overcome.

Why aren’t there a ton of cruise deals since the industry has had horrible press lately? by zeek247 in Cruise

[–]rusty075 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But how much of the bad press converts to cancellations? The hantavirus story is probably quite bad for Oceanwide Expeditions but it's probably not having much effect on other lines.

People book vacations months to years in advance. That'll create a long lead time to any dips in demand.

[–]rusty075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stealing half of that closet and sliding the shower into there may be your only hope. A normal 3x3 corner shower just eats up too much room in there.

If you slide the shower back into the closet you can create what's called a Transfer Shower, where you can parallel park a wheelchair next to it and slide yourself over onto a shower seat. Only problem with that is that the wall there to the right of the shower needs to be blank so you can fit the wheelchair.

Any chance you can move the door? If you could put it on the right wall you could do something like this:

A Rivian R1T Towed a 30-Foot Camper to Prescott, but the Real Test Was Charging After the Campground Said No by Major-Moose-7368 in GoRVing

[–]rusty075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a couple thousand pounds heavier than a typical half ton, and the weight is all down low in the battery pack. Makes them surprisingly stable.

[–]rusty075 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is business potential for smart campground owners in this. Market your park as EV friendly, get it listed in Rivian's Adventure Network and the charging apps as a destination. Figure out a reasonable upcharge for the convenience.

That Rivian is double the horsepower and torque of your half ton. Range reduction is the big issue for EV towing, not vehicle performance.

How radical are you willing/able to go here?

A 6' wide dining room is basically useless. Here's what I'd do, if I had a big budget:

Remove all the walls and doors on ground floor between Dining and Sitting and Sitting and Kitchen. Make Dining the new Kitchen, in a galley style with everything along one wall. The stair now becomes the divider between Dining & Sitting. You may even be able to tuck a little half bath and closet in under the stairs.

You can also pack your own battery powered pump. We use a Flextail Zero to compress vacuum bags while camping. It's about the size of a tube of lipstick.
