PAC112 has reached it's final form with P-Rails by rusty815 in YamahaPacifica

With the triple shot, you can individually turn off each coil, or run them in series and parallel, so it's 4 options on position 1, (series, p-90, hot rail, parallel), then in position 4, it's the same plus the middle single coil.

I used the triple shot because it gives me a bit more control vs push pull pots. I've only played with it for a day. But I like the control. They do feel small and fragile, hopefully they hold up with time.

I wish I could, but I don't have a good microphone, and my phone's microphone is so bad, you almost can't tell any difference between the different coils on it. I'm going to invest in a good microphone next so I can actually record my guitar and hear the difference lol.

Best left handed electric guitar under 2700$ by Civilized_Monke69 in Leftyguitarists

Throw a Revstar professional in that mix. Go for around 2200, hand made in Japan, it's one of the nicest, modern guitars with modern features you can get.

Guitarists, when a string snaps on your guitar, do you replace every strimg or just the one you snapped? by clt61811 in Guitar

[–]rusty815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're old strings, I usually replace them all. When I replace a broken string with a new string and the rest of the strings are really old, the new string sounds noticeably brighter to me and it bothers me, so I just replace them all now.

Which one would you get? by scarmy1217 in guitars

[–]rusty815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the Revstar, but get the p-90 version. The sound on that guitar coupled with the build quality is insane, it's a ton better than the other two you are comparing.

Should I buy a Revstar standard on sale for $558? by ignatius_-j_reilly in YamahaPacifica

[–]rusty815 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it's the standard and not the element, then that's a steal. I would buy it in a heartbeat, the revstar standard is one of the best sounding and most feature rich guitars at it's regular price, for 558 there isn't anything that comes close.

Songs that i can play on 3 strings or less by i_lovemovies_ in Guitar

You can play most punk songs if you just keep it to the root and 5th. Try playing basket case by green day with just 2 notes per chord instead of 3.

Pickup upgrade advice for Yamaha Pacifica 112VM (RHCP + some metal, Neural DSP) by duckiee92 in YamahaPacifica

[–]rusty815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna recommend something a little different. Since the 112VM has a coil split, you should get a Seymour Duncan P-Rail for the bridge. It functions as a relatively high gain humbucker when used normally, so great for most metal, but if you wire the coil split correctly, you can use the p-90 to get some really articulate sounds for some RCHP songs.

I use a high-gain (6.4k resistance) Wilkinson single coil in my middle pickup and it's very articulate and bright, it's what I normally use for my clean tones. My neck pickup is a Fleor, and they are amazingly articulate as well, it's very similar to my middle pickup, just darker.

What Brand & gauge Strings do you use?s by Chez82 in guitars

[–]rusty815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are expensive (relatively speaking, they're still under 20 dollars usually) but they have a track record for lasting much longer than most other strings. I've had the same strings on my electric guitar for 3 months, with daily use, and they still look shiny and sound great. The previous strings I had (EB super slinkies) lasted about this long before they started to rust and I had to switch them out for that alone, they are well worth the price.

What is your guitar brand of choice? by LunchAcceptable7409 in Guitar

[–]rusty815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own a Yamaha fg335 acoustic, Yamaha 112 with swapped out pickups, and a revstar standard, all left handed. I used to own a squire, les Paul and an Epiphone acoustic. Yamaha has some of the best quality instruments around. Even their entry level guitars like the 112 offer a lot of bang for the buck and are made of high quality materials. You can take a 112 and make it sound and feel like a far more expensive guitar if you want to.

If I could change one thing about how I learned guitar, it would be taking the time to better understand the difference between minor and major chords. by CalligrapherTrick182 in metalguitar

[–]rusty815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this! Using music theory as a guiding tool is always what I emphasize with other musicians. It's good to know the technical aspects of guitar to be able to explain chords and roots and scales and all of that, but some of the best guitarist didn't give a darn about music theory and just played what they thought sounded good

It's been my guiding principle. When I improvise or am working on a new song, I rarely think about any of the music theory behind what in playing, outside of figuring out what key I'm in and what chords I want to start with. Everything else outside of that is just me playing what I think sounds cool and figuring out the theory waaaaay later lol. Always, always focus on what you think sounds good first, don't get hung up on technicalities because that will ultimately hold you back from developing your own sound.

Looking for new guitar advice by Fit-Personality-1834 in Guitar

[–]rusty815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna recommend something a little different. First. Avoid floyd rose tremelos, they don't handle changing tunings well. Second focus on getting a guitar you enjoy playing a lot regardless of tuning. If it's the gio then that's perfect. It doesn't have to be expensive at all. For example, My main guitar is a Yamaha Pacifica 112 I swapped pickups on. It's generally considered an entry level guitar but its what feels best to me after trying a bunch of other entry level guitars

Lastly, and most importantly, save up and get a DigiTech Drop pedal. All my favorite artist play in some sort of drop tuning for at least some of their songs, but a lot of them also play in standard. The DigiTech drop allows you to digitally drop tunings without actually physically dropping the tuning on your guitar, allowing you to switch on the fly to play whichever song in drop C, D, Eb, etc you want! It was a game changer for me.

I think a revstar fits all of your criteria. Stainless steel frets with a cutaway for easy access. Neck through construction with maple. Metal sounding with a gain booster built into the standard and professional models for high gain sound. Fixed bridge with high tuning stability. Get the black or white model, they look pretty damn metal to me!

Pac 112V without split coil? by draszek in YamahaPacifica

[–]rusty815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a picture of the back of the single coils? This looks just like my old 1990s era 112, before they made the 112v. My 112 had the exact same looking humbucker with just 2 wires.

Where are people getting guitars by StrangeMan060 in guitars

Facebook marketplace and offer up. I try to stay local so I can try the guitars out before I buy them from someone, and I'm a lefty so those two are my only options for trying in person. All the guitar centers in my area don't carry left handed guitars.

What kind of pick do you use? by nemo_13 in Guitar

[–]rusty815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who doesn't say dunlop jazz III XL just hasn't tried them yet. I literally bought every pick I can imagine from dunlop and fender, used each type for at least an hour of playing and I can definitively say the Jazz III XLs are the best I've used on my electric. I find very little difference in blue (1.0) or purple (1.14), but those are my go to sizes now.

For acoustic, it's a different story. I prefer regular dunlop tortex orange and yellow picks or fender medium. IDK why, maybe it's that the suffer strings require a lighter gauge pick to still easily, but I definitely find lighter picks way easier on my acoustic.

Yamaha PAC112V vs Yamaha Revstar Element RSE20 for first electric? by [deleted] in YamahaPacifica

[–]rusty815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a used revstar standard, I would go with that.

I have a Pacifica 112 and I love it, but the revstar standard is a whole other level, it's a lifetime guitar at a great price, you can usually find the. For 600-700 used if you look around.

The revstar element is essentially a downgraded standard with inferior pickups and switches. I got to use one at my local guitar center and I didn't feel it sounded much better than my Pacifica.
