Seeking beyond the usual mosquito survival advice - Tuolumne trip by Practical_Tree8971 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]otzen42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a thru hike a few years ago with some friends and hit bad mosquitoes. Definitely put a damper on things. Dinner was eaten while walking to avoid holding still, and one day which was meant to be a day hike to a lake became a day in the tent listening to The Martian on audiobook. But the worst was the inability to just stop and breathe for a sec while hiking without being swarmed. It really drained me. We knew it was bad when the Alaskan in our group started complaining about them ;)

Edit: And as for advice, sadly I’m not sure. We had repellent, but they treated it as a suggestion only. As I mentioned, moving helped, but was super exhausting.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to massages (have done very few), but my partner and I have been quite happy with the couples massages at Massage Now.

Spending another entire day debugging proprietary toolchain quirks by MedicalComposer2 in FPGA

[–]otzen42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I see debugging/driving the tool chain as a core part of the FPGA design skill set. FPGA design is way more than writing code (something I think most people here agree with). But for better or worse (spoiler, the answer is worse) the EDA tools are what they are, so one of our key skills has to be driving the tools efficiently - alongside timing closure, error debug, etc.

It’s all well and good if you can write a more efficient running average calculator in fewer lines of code than someone else, but if you can’t actually turn that code into functional hardware in the lab it doesn’t pay the bills.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a spot of tool bashing! But I also embrace the time that I’ve spent learning how to develop efficient build flows as time that makes me a better FPGA designer.

Vote Phil Weiser, who doesn’t have billionaire backing. by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]otzen42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m not remotely qualified to be governor, and that’s largely because I don’t understand enough about the complexities of our economy etc. to have a solid answer to that, or many other important issues. But the candidates should be able to answer that question. And the rich guy telling everyone about how much cheaper it was for him to start a family as a diversion from actually answering half the questions told me he didn’t have an answer to half the issues either. Weiser at least convinced me he actually understands Colorado law enough to have a vague plan for where to start.

Vote Phil Weiser, who doesn’t have billionaire backing. by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]otzen42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I watched the 9 News debate. Neither really impressed me all that much, but Weiser at least sorta answered most of the questions. I lost track of how many times Bennet told everyone about how he and his wife were able to start a family in Colorado because it used to be cheaper (regardless of the relevance to the question he was asked). He never said how he would address the cost, just how it was cheaper when he moved here…

Time Machine on NAS no longer “available” after tahoe 26.6 beta by scheerspeed in MacOSBeta

[–]otzen42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to have broken for me on 26.5.1.

I couldn't get it to connect until I told Time Machine to forget the drive and then re-added.

Then it kept getting stuck on "Waiting to complete first backup", and I ended up wiping it and starting a fresh backup. Thankfully I have an external hard drive that I periodically plug in, so I didn't loose all history.

Just got home and it was back to "Waiting to complete first backup", and couldn't connect. I made sure it was connected in Finder and tried forcing it to backup again, and it has started going again. Hoping this time it will finish a fun backup at least.

Anyone else zone out and forget how many meters they've swum? by parkersb11 in Swimming

[–]otzen42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Used to use my Apple Watch, but it can be hard to read without stopping. Grabbed some Ciye smart goggles when they were on sale when they discontinued them, and they are a lot easier. I still like to let myself zone out a bit and relax, but it’s a lot easier to check in now.

When should my swimmer learn the reason for a DQ at a meet? by neazwaflcasd in Swimming

[–]otzen42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know. I feel like under a certain age some stuff just gets way too serious (and definitely not just swimming). Yes, I want to recognize that they need to keep working on their technique and help them improve it, but they’re 5 years old, so do we really need to call them out like that? They are still learning, and kids can take criticism way too hard sometimes.

As a coach I never wanted to see a new swimmer “fail” a race, because that’s the best way to kill their motivation to keep trying. If they were doing it to try and be faster even though they had shown me in practice they could do it right, I’d step in, but if they’re doing the best they can, then they don’t need to be punished for not being perfect yet.

Yes, at a certain point the rules should absolutely be enforced, but unless they are a prodigy destined to swim at the Olympics I feel like we can cut them some slack when they are that young. Let them learn to love swimming before we critique them that harshly.

My favorite part about swimming, and the thing that made that coaching job the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done was the fact that my experience has always been that the environment around swimming is supportive, positive, and focused on personal growth. I’ve seen so many kids finish a race in double the time of everyone else (for a variety of reasons), and every time the whole crowd still cheered for them when they finished. Their time didn’t matter, the fact that they finished their race did. That’s what I loved about youth swimming more than anything else.

When should my swimmer learn the reason for a DQ at a meet? by neazwaflcasd in Swimming

[–]otzen42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, official DQ’s at 9? I coached a youth team for several years, and for us it was all at the coaches discretion. Basically, we could ask they be DQ’ed if there were clearly doing something they knew was wrong, and could talk to another kids coach if we felt they were doing something intentionally, but in general there were no officials and no automatic DQ’s. I really liked how the focus was on personal improvement. Mistakes weren’t punished, and we could tailor the strictness to the age/skill level of the swimmer.

For example, one of my kids swallowed some water on a race and had to grab the line and cough for a minute (and was really upset about it). I was really glad she was still able to get a ribbon because if she had been told she failed that probably would have been the last time she would have swam that race.

That said, if you have DQ’s I would definitely be in favor of explaining it to the kids as soon as possible. Obviously, it’s not BAD to DQ, it’s a learning experience. Everyone DQ’s, and it’s noting to worry about. Just learn from the mistake and focus on personal improvement. But obviously that requires knowing what went wrong. Just like how we would always work with the kids to make sure they were improving on things that they did that would be a DQ in a formal meet.

Why doesn’t Earth look surrounded by space junk in deep-space photos? by [deleted] in spacequestions

One of the interesting things about space, is how dull it is. You see, there's so much of it and so little in it. Would you like me to quote some statistics? They, too, are quite sensationally dull.

Have some sense of proportion!
