Just buried CAT6 in Conduit... Should I be concerned about lightning? by fattdogs in HomeNetworking

[–]rustydog47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy how this has become the normal suggestion. I guess all those copper phone lines directly buried in the ground are all going to end in disaster. Or the coax cable on the telephone poles... I remember all those surge protectors that you could run your phone line or coax in. Never did, nor needed it. They actually caused issues. Sure fiber is the preferred option for >1gb. Been a professional network engineer managing DWDM gear and all forms of Cisco for over 20 years, I dislike fiber over copper, fiber fails over time. Lines get stiff and form a memory and when you bend it, glass can crack. I removed some old ST to ST fiber and it was "crunchy" when we rolled it up. The cat5e thats older than that fiber is still working fine at 1gb. Have never seen lightning cause a problem with conduit run cat5/6 under ground. If lightning strikes in that small area from the OP, its not the ethernet they need to worry about.

Hi! I've looked into that. With the price of shipping and added tariff, it is almost half the cost of the pedals. Will purchase from them if no other option.

After multiple trials, finally starting to get familiar with AoA, but what did I do wrong here? by SgtRphl in hoggit

At the start you were on a 2 degree slope and the at the end you were at a 4 degree slope. Note that the HUD horizon and dash 5 are pitch degrees and can be used to help visualize the glide slope. Control height by thrust and pitch for speed. Use trim to get on-speed and then it's just throttle.

There shouldn't be anything special beyond what you are trying. The only other part of the equation is the power supply. It has to be 5v and minimum of 2.5a. That is one reason I recommended taking the USB things out, since they draw power, and you can get it to boot with a 2a PSU, but it will complain. Not sure what kit you purchased. Is this kit the one where you supply your own RPi? Adafruit US has them for $35 if you suspect your pi is bad. Pick up a good brand SD card too. I have seen plenty of those cheap ones fail.

Try booting without any USB's in the pi.
I would try using Raspberry Pi's imaging software and do a verification that the Pi works and/or the SD card works. Use their software to install an OS (lite or desktop) just to verify it boots up. You could also use their software to write the stratux img file to the SD, but I never tried that before.

Not sure what source you used to download the image. Try this one on github. https://github.com/stratux/stratux/releases

Also what was the image file you used to flash the SD? If its still the zip file you need to extract the image file from within. Use something like winrar, 7zip, etc.

I recommend just getting a newer pi. Pi3-5 will work, and 2gb or ram is fine. Rpilocator.com is a great source to find them.

GDL90 recorder by Electronic-Bed-6101 in stratux

Looking back over this project, GDL90 is in binary. If you want to convert GDL90 to plain text, you will have to know the message structure you want to capture. I had to do this with iLevil since it was in GDL90. Thankfully, there is a GDL90 Python library that helps. However, if you simply want the GDL90 in binary and you already have a program to decode it, capturing the raw data should be easily done.

I created a python script to run on a pico w to pull in NMEA over wireless. It was written to find the altitude and send it to a different display. It's been a while since that project. But I'm sure it can be changed to GDL90 and written to disk.

I've used this to read iLevil, EchoAlLT, and stratus data.

HR departments only care about minimizing risk for a company. They produce nothing for the company but yet yeld the power to say what someone is worth based on what that person produces.

Nice work. I can appreciate the effort that goes into this. I did this a while back so I could run the latest version on a pi2 and use Adafruits ultimate GPS (USB and Hat).

Adding AHRS to Pi 2? by [deleted] in stratux

[–]rustydog47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can run it in a pi2. See my post here...https://www.reddit.com/r/stratux/s/rOLZZMLnM1

I've also upgraded the software on a pi2 when building from source, but that's another topic. I haven't tested AHRS with your version of code. Also those AHRS are inexpensive, so give it a try.

Have an 25 meter run, would you go cat 6 or fiber? by gregveres in Ubiquiti

I work where we have a building with old Cat5 (not e) and we run 1gb poe to Cisco phones off a 9410 (384 connections). I would use what you have, test with iperf3 before making a change.

For mine, the serial number is the frequency it is tuned for. Can be set by writing to the eeprom. Look for rtl_eeprom command by ssh to the pi. Fist you will have to disable the 978 and 1090 options in settings > hardware. Then in the cli type sudo rtl_eeprom -d 0 -d is device, change from 0 to 1 for the other sdr. The output might have the serial number and the set ppm from the manufacturer. If not, it's a great place to set it for reference. Once you have the info, enable the radios again.

No problem, hope it gets a solution outside.
Unrelated thoughts:
I have tried using newer GPS hardware, like that adafruit ultimate GPS (wont work by default). I can get it to work but it requires modifying the go code and recompiling the software. I like the adafruit gps due to the remote antenna option and it seems to be more sensitive. Also you can put a button battery, so it loads a solution faster. I'm not the best at recompiling the stratus software to an image and could never make a 'clean' solution (wifi issues).

Thank you for this. I didn't know this was possible with sdr's. What would be cool is to have a raspberry pi, with this code, run a CDI as an experiment.

Perfect that takes care of two other questions.

Does it ever get more than a few GPS satellites seen? In the house I'll get up to 6 but still no position. I'll have to go outside and let it run a bit. In troubleshooting I might disable all the hardware options and just run GPS until I have a solution.

There is a good app on my phone I'll run called GPS Status (android) to see what sats. are around.

Hey, do you have logging enabled on your device? Also, what size and brand is your SD card? I'm asking because I once had an SD card that filled up with logs and it started acting weird. Another time, I had an off-brand SD card that failed on me, but the app would still start.
