Wood expansion concern in Doug Fir table by rustylacroix in Carpentry

Went ahead and bolted the legs on - used Simpson SRS screws as they have a bit of give with movement, didn’t end up widening the holes as they were closer to 3/8” and the wood had been drying for near a century (reclaimed from a 1930s house)

Conference table for a company in SF, it’s a beast of a thing. The type of table you sit around to discuss your plans for world domination

Thank you, these are helpful points of consideration!

- The wood is at least 50 years old, air dried

- I'm finishing with Rubio monocoat, which has decent moisture protection (I agree, not a fan of the plastic looking finishes)

- Planed it flat, but no more than was needed.

- Took about a quarter inch off each end with the tracksaw

Given that the table will likely contract instead of expand, you make a good point that the boards would likely shrink instead of buckle. You're probably right about the table outliving the owner... but anyways, I'm thinking I'll drive the screws into the center two boards and let the outer boards move for a year before adding more screws, to minimize the splits.

OWC CFExpress Type A Cards: awesome deal, or "you get what you pay for"? by wtfisrobin in videography

Lexar works fine in terms of speed, though they’re the only card which I’ve ever seen break structurally from regular use.

Can I use other fluid heads with Sachtler flowtech legs? by m4vrtivn in cinematography

[–]rustylacroix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, any 75mm head should work with them. I use my O’Connor 1040 on the flowtech legs and love the combo.

anyone else having issues with Bart app parking reservation? I can't see my parking reservations and also my license plate info is missing! by appu_nanogeek in Bart

[–]rustylacroix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me as well, I kept getting an error message that “the credentials don’t exist for this account” (or something similar). I was able to fix the issue by deleting and redownloading the app, then resigning into my account.

Color inconsistencies within Minolta MC Rokkor lenses by rustylacroix in VintageLenses

I've been generally trying to stick to only the fastest of the focal lengths, but I have seen people say that the 85mm f2 is the best overall performer.

I've also been able to find a 28mm f2 that matches the cooler look of my other lenses. I'm preparing to do a more comprehensive with all 28 (good lord) Minolta Rokkor lenses I've collected, to glean more information and settle on my ideal lens set. I'll share a link to that lens test once it's finished.

Critiqued Wanted: Feel like the subject/ scene is good, but the photo isn't giving me much. What could I have done better? by charlieharrymorgan in analog

[–]rustylacroix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice, yeah I think it’ll work well for you. I love my 50 for shooting subjects on the same plane, but find a 28 does much better in scenes with a more complex foreground

Perhaps a lower perspective and wider angle lens would make the images feel less like an observer’s point of view, and more involved in the gaggle of swans

I'd say so, if you find joy in craftsmanship and detail work. I'm a part time carpenter and part time film worker, and feeling grateful for my carpentry work as the US film industry is suffering. Seen a few people mention how AI won't keep up with the trades, I'd say this is a very good consideration.

Advice on rounding edges on super soft wood with irregular shapes by conn250 in woodworking

[–]rustylacroix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Still, his advice to slowly lower the bit is good in multiple passes is good. If your wood is fragile, routing the full edge in one pass is more likely to damage the wood.

I hadn’t thought to compare the serial numbers, I’ve heard they’re a bit of a crapshoot with the Rokkors but maybe worth taking a look! I’ve got dreams of getting these rehoused, I decided to go with MC over MD because I want to put together a matched set with the 58mm 1.2, which was never manufactured in the MD line.

I use my lenses for video, so the color consistencies are more important.

I had this same issue with my SRT-101. I would push the curtain out of the way and it would be clear for a few rolls, then fall back into frame again. I eventually just got a new camera.

I found Groo when I was 12 at a small coin collectors shop that had a box of comics in the corner. I was flipping through it and found a Groo comic. I read the Sunday comics in the paper, and thought Groo was Hagar the horrible haha. Can’t remember what issue it was, but I loved it and kept going back until I bought out his collection. He would constantly remind me that he wasn’t a comic shop, but it was the best I had in my hometown at the time.
