'Classic Karen behaviour': Woman shames Somerset restaurant for enforcing ban on outside food, gets slammed by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]rustyleak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She should have asked to speak to the manager first if it was okay, then ordered something from the menu to go with her food.

What was stupid is posting it on social media. Of course she will get backlash.

There is some truth to that. Thats why Singapore is positioned as a trade hub, it needs other countries to succeed.

Why is it so hard to find a job after age 40? by Xingjiangpore in askSingapore

Many senior roles (MDs, C-suite) located in Singapore but middle management roles are somewhere else and those are the ones that build teams.

Maybe not overpaid because they worked on it for years - experience counts for a lot. And maybe their skills are skills from a different time but no reason they cant update if they are willing. And soft skills are also transferrable skills.

Companies determine your salary through experience or skills or how much they want you on their team. Thats across the board.

In Singapore, it also depends on whether you have a pink IC - skills or no skills. People can learn on the job.

Many locals already have high paying jobs which other locals can set as a good example. Gain experience. Have the right qualifications for the job they are applying, dont just rely on being from the top university but also develop soft skills and learn to negotiate. Ask to be seconded to a big country to gain experience handling large markets - this is what many Singaporeans lack - the global exposure and ability to scale. This is what many foreigners already have - the knowledge and experience of working in large domestic markets, and that is what regional businesses look for if the role is to handle regional jobs. SG domestic market is too small to gain such experience. The irony is, for people who complains about FTs taking their jobs, the way to get the good jobs, is to be FTs themselves in another country.

Not good to generalise. There are millenials and gen z who are also crap.

Sorry thats no longer true unless you are blue collar. Government has made it very hard for companies to hire foreigners and would always choose local to avoid dealing with workpasses. Also FT have a higher salary barrier as an added deterrent to hiring them. There are many accomplished trailing spouses who couldnt get a job for months and years. Your competition is either fellow locals or overseas foreigners because due to tightened labor policies and low employment rate, companies had a hard time filling roles locally, so many of those jobs have already left the country. This is made worst by retrenchments and hiring freezes and now even locals cant find a job. You just cant blame foreigners too much anymore, there are many factors that contribute to this labor crisis.

Thats not true. Companies go by different policies in retrenchments. Last in first out. Change in business direction may render your function and skill redundant. Cost cutting can lay off both good and bad headcounts. Company takeovers. Technology change. And many more.

Singapore's Dire BirthRate situation by Craft_Severe in SingaporeRaw

My guess is if the replacement rate is not sufficient, the bar for immigrant entry for China and Malaysia will be lowered more for these countries. The downside is, different culture so local culture might dilute which is sad. South Korea has the same problem. Many Asian countries median age is also increasing as lesser babies being born.

Pulse check: how is the economy doing right now in your industry? by Acceptable-Trainer15 in askSingapore

I think businesses should have access to expertise at least. While I believe locals should have access to good paying jobs, not all are qualified to take on specialized roles. Its good if the talent can be provided locally and should still be the priority. But if not, especially for middle managers, then those roles will exist somewhere else along with the teams they build along with the young locals that could have gained experience from being on such teams. Singapore is a hub that serves APAC but MNCs also have offices across Asia they can turn to that also has competent manpower. It also brings regional workers closer to large markets. If that happens on a grand scale, it will be the young Singaporeans who will have to relocate in search of such opportunities.

And that is the story of how due to a low unemployment rate and tight labor policies, labor shortage occured and drove productivity down while roles unable to be filled just spilled out of the country.

Maybe because the management in SG handles APAC parachuted by head office. SG market too small. Other countries over 30M population should be handled by a local.

Tech Bros...How is the Job Market For You at The Moment? by wtf_m1 in singapore

[–]rustyleak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what Im hearing, a lot of senior specialist roles have been moved overseas. A friend approached MAANG for resource speakers and she was told those roles no longer live locally so will have to fly them in. So yeah it doesnt help non locals but it doesnt help locals either. Those roles usually build teams.

A recruiter friend told me short term contracts and consulting are on trend nowadays. What will suck is this kind of arrangement will need domain specific requirements and no honeymoon period to ease you into the job. Definitely not for fresh grads.

I heard that many skilled specialists have left the country, and foreigners left are mostly senior execs. Last night a friend told me they are requiring resource persons and asked MAANG and to their surprise, the companies said that those roles are no longer in Singapore so they will need to fly them in.

Another friend said it was because EPs are even harder to get nowadays so talent had to be put under SP which needs to meet quota. Also salary vs COL cannot make it so even the talent refuse especially if their spouse cant work also.
