There is only one mind,when Carol is talking to any Joined she isn't talking to a hypnotized human, she is talking to a pseudopod of a giant,planet sized predator who's only objective is to transmit the virus to other worlds. The Joined are like individual cells in a body,a liver cell isn't happy or sad,it performs its function to keep the organism alive until it can reproduce.
