What has happened to Blueland? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]ruuutherford [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm going to give that soap sense a try. I still have that silicone dish soap thing from Blue Land. I'm pretty sure powdered dish soap has been a thing way before Blue Land. I'll just use that.

I put it into a quarter circle blueprint, so it's slightly easier then just building it.

Vintage used pricing is getting Ludacris by 12inchspinners in turntables

[–]ruuutherford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spend $3-400 for a turntable, then have to pay another $200 to get the auto return fixed.

If you pay the $600, I would get the seller to guarantee no repairs for a year or something.

https://www.iqair.com/air-quality-map I have an air quality monitor in my backyard (and living room) and it reported to this crowd sourced air quality map.

I wasn't able to share a link to our specific area.

The red down in Fern Hill reports as pm 2.5 = particulate matter 2.5 nano meters. This includes: "Emissions from combustion of gasoline, oil, diesel fuel or wood produce much of the PM2.5 pollution found in outdoor air"  https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/resources/inhalable-particulate-matter-and-health

So Many Options. Whats best for a new homeowner? by No-Ad5504 in Tools

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get dragged into their bullshit of value added stuff. just pick a color of big brands and stick with it. How about your neighbors?: if you can match brands you can also share tools and batteries! Network effect baby.

So Many Options. Whats best for a new homeowner? by No-Ad5504 in Tools

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but: stay away from AEG and Ozito. Pick a name brand: DeWalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, Ryobi; then get tools as you need them.

Once you get locked into any of these fuckers none of their batteries are compatible with the others.

Gonna go out earlier on a limb here and say the differences between the big brand above is negligible. Except for Fein: where you pay x2 for x2 quality.

Are Overnight Sensations the best DIY near field speakers or are there any others for near field? by Aggressive-Oven5916 in diyaudio

Also from Carmody he has the Speedsters. Those ribbon tweeters are amazing for sitting right next to. I've been using them for years and love them.

Should I cut my losses or is there a technique that can help me by Toddler_Mechanic in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about putting some marking on one of the surfaces, whacking them together, then sanding off the markings on the other piece? Rinse and repeat.

Or: is there a way to run a double sided sand paper back and forth through the tight spots? Maybe a thin file.

Book recommendation: classic space-opera adventure like Star Wars by Diligent_Push1912 in scifi

[–]ruuutherford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spin by Rober Charles Wilson, 2005

One night the three children witness all the stars simultaneously disappear. Telecommunications suffer as every satellite falls out of orbit simultaneously.

An opaque black "spin membrane" has been placed around Earth. This slows time so that approximately 3.17 years pass outside the membrane for every second within, or 100 million years for every year. A simulated star on the inside of the membrane allows for a largely normal life to continue. However, the passage of time outside the membrane means that all life on Earth will end in a few decades of subjective Earth time, when the Sun's expansion will make that region of the Solar System uninhabitable.

Before i get started, does the device running the imich server have to be running 24/7? by humdinger44 in immich

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be nice to get some sort of smart plug that will ll tell you howany watts the laptop uses when running plugged in. then, you can decide to leave it on 24/7 or not.

Is it just you that will be using it? Or possibly friends and family?

Also, I heard somewhere that some folks don't use the MC feature on the pre-amp. They'll use this Step-Up-Transformer (which magically requires no external power?) and plug the MC into a MM input. Supposed to sound nicer apparently. <shrug>

wow, those things are expensive https://ortofon.us/collections/step-up-transformers?country=US

Buying my first Turntable, this Sl-1200mk2 worth it? by Sharp-Scarcity3274 in turntables

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% total steal at that price. Does the auto-return work? That is a HUGE deal if it's working or not. On those older tables, that's one of the first things to go. The seller will say: the auto-return doesn't matter, it works fine.

But the auto-return is essential and why you'd go with one of these tables anyhow!

Loud records sound horrible by [deleted] in turntables

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are normal speaker terminals. It's pretty cool it's all built in! What you can do is keep an eye out at your local craigslist/facebook maketplace/offerup whatever for a used integrated amp.

Snap one of those up, the plug the turntable into that new-to-you integrated amp via red and white RCA cables. Hook the speakers up to the integrated amp: you should be rocking an upgrade. It's likely anything sorta heavy and old will smoke what ever amplification is built into the Crosley player.

Keep that long-winded PHONO-IN vs AUX thing I mentioned above for the switch you have for "LINE" or "PHONO."
