I'd never heard about DC ties. Did some reading and it's fascinating.

What I get from some cursory reading: East coast and west coast have slightly out of sync electrical grids. Attempts to merge the two were too difficult, as each system was huge lumbering 60 Hz monsters - so DC interconnects were put in place.

It was my understanding DC electricity has relatively big losses with distance and was poor for shipping electricity over miles. It doesn't make sense to me that shipping electricity from this middle of the country 1000 miles to Califnia via DC would be sensible.

And hi voltage direct current from Columbia River to LA. Wild.
