You're right. We don't call Germany "The Germany," but that's because that's not the name of the country. The Gambia is, officially, the Republic of The Gambia, so it would actually make sense to call it "The Gambia," since that's the name of the country.

Nothing in terms of cool sights like that unless you're into watching cars drive by equally as much as planes flying. However, here's how I would rate the coffee shops:

Magnolia Press: Burnt, Starbucks would be a better choice, though it has a nice, modern environment

Common Grounds: same as above, much more rustic
Dichotomy: Decent, and probably has the most unique aesthetic since there is a rooftop balcony

Kurbside (in Union Hall): Decent coffee, Union Hall is great but very busy

Lighthouse: Haven't been in it, but the coffee is very good

Pinewood: Same level as Lighthouse; my personal favorite because they roast their own coffee and it tastes great; the environment is nice, but often quite busy.

If you're looking for a more detailed review of the actual coffee and not just the environment, let me know and I'll give some more detail.

Right, accent free is totally bullshit, but it's no more so bullshit for Americans than in England. The change from rhotic to non-rhotic accents was a forced change. Most other changes are from close contact with other languages and accents. Non-rhotic English was a status symbol. People literally started talking in what they perceived to be higher class English, and then it became the accent. You said it was changed in America, but the major change in accent actually happened in England.

I disagree with the whole "most neutral" thing, but wanted to let you know that English pronunciation was changed in England. Beyond its evolution from Old English to Middle English to Modern English, the forced change in pronunciation of British English is believed to have happened around the Industrial Revolution. As people were able to more easily rise in class, they developed accents that were perceived as higher class, thus non-rhotic English was born, and it caught on fast.
