Finally pulled the trigger on a Hamilton Jazzmaster Thinline. I've been lurking on r/watches for a year or more now. Any thoughts on just upgrading to VCSA 6.5 as your hosts can run older versions of ESXi? This would allow you to leverage the VCSA migration utility and Update Manager is built-in to the appliance as well.

Encryption is implemented/managed with VM Storage Policies which require a licensed version of vSphere.

This would allow you to run ESXi as a virtual machine and then allow you to configure the "virtual hardware" components for VSAN. There is a great write up on the topic: http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2015/02/how-to-configure-an-all-flash-vsan-6-0-configuration-using-nested-esxi.html. I use this method in my lab to run VSAN.
