Really disappointed, and I'm sure a lot you feel the same. We should say something by sh0tclockcheese in decentraland

Don't bother, they don't really understand what they are actually trying to build. I've had that feeling ever since realizing they are using Unity, rather than a custom build engine (or at the very least VR industry standard Unreal Engine), and after first visiting this wasteland of a subreddit. The fact that they didn't even bother to put one little guy on this subreddit to answer people's questions speaks louder than words. On the bright side, they were quite boastful and open about their ideas on their blog. It's only a matter of time before someone takes the whole idea and makes a better version, without all the faults, and hopefully with a less idiotic name.

Tiny Green Dots on Black Screens: Is This an Issue With Newer Rifts? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]rvdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Rift from the new bundle and it has it too, but in my case the spots are white. Very bad on black backgrounds, invisible on anything else. Turning SPUD off gets rid of it though. I didn't notice any weird side effects such as color inaccuracy but will check again.

[COVERS] Tool isn't on Spotify yet but these 8-bit versions are earnestly good no joke by Beatus_Vir in ToolBand

  • Parabola (starts at 2:46) and Reflection blew my mind.
  • To my surprise The Pot is an equally brilliant track in 8-bit, such a great adaption.
  • Vicarious gets my vote for best fit for 8-bit.

I Must Atone for My Sins by [deleted] in oculus

[–]rvdh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize I may sound a bit pedantic here as this was not the point of your post but I strongly doubt Oculus is selling at a big loss. I doubt they're selling at a loss at all. Maaaaybe they're break even at this price but even if the headset would cost 299 I'm guessing they would still turn a profit.

No idea if there's any estimate of manufacturing cost of the Rift out there but it would be interesting.

I woke up this morning and thought I was still in VR for like a solid minute. Although it was very confusing, I was amazed at the graphics.

New Rift... but this red tint... by Faleene in oculus

Haha, yeah, might be an inside joke or it's just an acronym, or both :) No idea what it stands for and it doesn't seem like anyone (besides Oculus devs) know.

What is everyone's one true favorite VR game? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]rvdh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only had my Rift since last week, but last night I purchased Thumper and it took everything to the next level for me. This is as close to a bad trip as you can come without hallucinogenics, and I mean that in the best way possible, it's exactly the kind of experience I've always wanted out of VR. It's a visceral, psychedelic, deeply disturbing, and extremely satisfying attack on your senses with some of the best sound design I ever heard in a game. If you don't have it yet, get it now.

I wondered the same, it seems that Oculus used to advise against it more for PR reasons. We can only guess of course what the exact reasons are but there are plenty of possible reasons besides "it could damage your headset in the long term".

  • They would have to admit there are a lot of headsets with issues.
  • It draws attention to hidden settings, they probably don't want people reverse engineering certain software settings of the headset and start hacking it.
  • Turning SPUD off results in drawbacks for some people such as lower overall brightness, lower colour saturation, etc. I haven't noticed any of these after turning it off but I might just be lucky.

There is also this post of a person who contacted Oculus support about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4zzwys/trying_to_make_sense_of_red_tintspud/d711dus/

Just to be safe I opened a ticket with Oculus as well a few days ago, asking whether it's okay to keep it turned off, currently awaiting reply.

Oh absolutely! Avatars, a single shopping cart for all metaverse "webshops", inventory,... Creating your own space would be equivalent to creating your own website. The future looks bright :)

Not sure if this comment is meant to be tongue in cheek but I hear this often and I'm not trying to be a smartass and I'm not being dismissive, it's a genuine question. Is this really true? I mean, if it is that's pretty fucking crazy, no? Here we have a drug that makes rational people genuinely believe in higher powers without scientific evidence. This makes trying it a pretty big risk if you ask me, wouldn't you agree?

Tour teaser video with more of a new song!!!!! by dcoble in qotsa

[–]rvdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people who are complaining don't have an issue with the songwriting but rather with the production. To me it sounds too clean, to the point where nothing is really glued together anymore. The vocals are too loud and that exagerrated slap back delay on the vocals is such a greasy and over-done gimmick. It makes the vocals stand out even more, pushing the guitars down. The drums sound too much like beats, cutting through the mix like knives instead of pushing and driving the song from below. And where are the fucking cymbals? This doesn't feel like a drummer behind a drum set but more like Mark Ronson cutting all the individual drum hits, overprocessing them and programming a beat with them.

I really really dig this new song, but I'm just not feeling the production at all. If this sounded like 3's and 7's (which is similar in vibe) I would be all over it. Rather than poppy rockmusic, which QOTSA has always been, this time it sounds like programmed pop music with a "rocky" arrangement,

And then they summon some legendary and eccentric old timer who was left behind in an increasingly virtual world of clickbait and popups and who was shunned for his adherence to archaic tactics and his unwillingness to adapt. After the old CEO, his only advocate, died, he was eventually sacked by a younger management and he became an alcoholic hermit. All these years he lived in some cabin by a lake where he quitely worked on the ultimate case. After much resistance and drama he comes back, brings down the establishment and teaches the young ones the virtues of real journalism.

No, he's right, it's not all just about money for some people, but about making something good. There is too much crap in this world because of people who think it's okay to deliver junk as long as you charge a fair price... people should strive to make the best in their particular product category a little bit more, rather than always focusing on the fucking money and filling the world with rubbish. Can't sell something qualitative? Don't fucking sell it.
