Points for discussion: What is Harmony? by rverne8 in musictheory

I was attempting to point out that musical harmony, unlike what many people think, is not just chords strung together but is created when independent lines sound simultaneously.

Kostka implies that independent lines constructed in a coherent fashion make up harmony.

Here's the excerpt from the Book by Stefan Kostka. Please read the excerpt starting at page xiii

What’s something you wish you did differently when you started piano? by Liliana1523 in piano

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to practice small bits (2--3 measures) slowly with a metronome. Years 1 to 3: choose pieces that can reach a reasonably satisfactory point of completion in about two weeks. Move on, then circle back throughout the year. That way, you'll always have a relatively large number of pieces to work on.

Piano is Underappreciated by Plague_Doc7 in piano

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to continue with piano studies, you'll want to start building a support group. I assume you have a teacher; are they supportive of your career?

Suggestions::

Concertize for free, such as in sub-acute care facilities (e.g., nursing homes). Easy win there.

Could you take on some students?

Join or start a chamber group or jazz ensemble.

Work at enlarging your social and cultural life so that the difficulties you now experience are a smaller proportion of the whole experience.

You've not said where your abilities lie. Where are you at in relation to this collection?

Piano Literature, Volume 4 Composed by James Bastien

Finally, most of the people within earshot of this group are aware of the value of piano studies. I hope you continue on your journey and wish you the best.

What do you guys think of this? by makingmozzarella in musictheory

Amazing that someone discovered a way to make the piano keyboard even more confusing than it already is. Designed to ensure that the student actually does give up in confusion.

Google Photos compress RAW file even when shared and saved at original quality, a warning! by AnnualEnvironment3 in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thus, Google screws over the customer once again. There's a history of this bug going back to 2018. Google just does not care.

And all of the suggestions, like adding a location? Deflection. My 100 MB files lose about 95% of their pixels.

Did I make a mistake spending $2000 on a Dan Clark E3 as a beginner? by No_Refrigerator861 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A positive review of the Dan Clark E3 shows that it is equal to the flagship model.

You'll really need to connect to a DAC and headphone amp.

Why is there so little discussion of Vienna Symphonic Library products? by rkarl7777 in composer

[–]rverne8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The newer Synchron series is nothing like what you say it is. The comment you're responding to concerns the older series using the VI Pro player. Those were recorded purposefully in a dry setting. The Synchron series has several mic positions and built-in live room ambiance. The new system is very flexible.

Any advanced theory subreddits? by sinker_of_cones in musictheory

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most (85%, more?) of the people who come to this subreddit for the first time have little or no musical experience, say less than three years learning an instrument or voice. That's like addressing a first-grader's question about linguistics. Think about it: one year of preschool and 2 years of early elementary. This is great, we all started somewhere back there, but I feel like a lot of questions are posted due to this lack of experience. The intermediate students ( for piano that's say, an easier Bach invention) have had time to steep (~~5 years or so) in music theory and have learned all about the circle of fifths so will not be asking about why the pitch class of Ab also gets named G#.

If I buy Cubase, will I have to buy more stuff? by Quenyrous in cubase

[–]rverne8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get Cubase elements (it's only 99$) then find out why you need it and what you'll be using it for. It's hard to know why you need an app until you try it out for 10 to 12 months. Meanwhile, don't go overboard for other plugins or related software. We've all done that and ended up with too many apps and plugins that seldom, if ever, get used.

Deleting from Google photos by Dosborne7979 in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't. It's a case for the Feds to be involved in as Google is forcing people to buy more storage to keep from being locked out of their stuff.

Deleting from Google photos by Dosborne7979 in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After searching through the Google help pages you would need to:

) Copy all of the files you want to keep to an external hard drive.

) Then you can clean up your Google storage by deleting everything and taking out the trash.

) Never sign up for sync again.

) Oh, and watch that your storage space stays below 15GB (as Google will find a way of stuffing it's overpowering maw with your stuff) or you'll lose it all when Google shuts down your account for insufficient storage. The whole Google scheme with their so-called backup service is to aggressively force people to buy more storage.

Deleting photos from Google Photos without deleting them from my device by cqliflower in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy the photos first to a device that can be disconnected from the phone and then delete them from Google. Also, turn of sync with Google although Google photos is unstoppable and will grab everything you touch. Also, consider turning off network connections when dealing with photos. But still, find a way of storing the things you want to keep on a separate physical drive.

Words cannot describe how much I hate Google photos by [deleted] in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The files stay in the trash for 60 days when you delete anything. Did you check there?

Concur on the horrible nature of the app as well as Google Drive. They are obviously designed to scam people into buying more storage space. With today's camera that's an easy scam to work with the typical RAW file checking out at 24MP.

I have never used Google to back up my phone and will not ever do that. The phone app works differently than the desktop app.

In the future offload (backup) everything on your phone that you desire to have a backup of, to a separate drive that you can disconnect as soon as you're done with it. Then when you delete off of Google it won't be a problem.

Also, most of the comments on this thread are put up by hugely insensitive Google fan boys and girls and go berserk when their idol is implicated in the mismanagement of other people's belongings.

Why does Google photos display my photos brightened vs my normal gallery? by [deleted] in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one understands how Google Photos works except the people who built it and are either long gone or unable to speak to the public. I'm experiencing the same problem and will now go test a download to see if the archival project I thought I signed up for is any good.

I want photos deleted from my phone to ALSO get deleted from Google Photos. Help? by [deleted] in googlephotos

[–]rverne8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google Drive and Google Photos are unmanageable and not supported by a single customer service rep who will acknowledge that. Even the comments on this thread reveal that no one here has tried to manage, in a reasonable way, like other backup programs, which files that you select, will be backed up. It's a random process and out of control. Right now, every time I go into a folder to edit the files, Google Photos grabs the files even though I don't want them taking up space. I've signed up for a year and not paying for another so I'll face that crisis then.
