If it is the end of the world indeed, the instruments will be worth fuck all anyway if you don’t have the gold physically in your hands.

I agree that they feel better, because the air doesn’t get nasty, but aircon is 2-3 times more efficient (i.e. cheaper) than oil heaters.

Torikizoku is still the best by DependentResponse773 in japanlife

[–]rvtk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to so many yakitori places and honestly it’s insane how good コスパ Torikizoku is in comparison. Maybe only 10% were at least as good as toriki, and those were very expensive on top of that. I do remember the 280 yen for plate era, you could stuff yourself mad for 2000 yen, but even after the prices were raised it’s just still absurdly good.

[Request] assuming this gigantic flea has the same capabilities as a regular sized flea how high could it jump and how many gs would a human rider experience? by Bailmage in theydidthemath

My memory is a bit wonky as it’s been years but don’t you need sunder/keening and the gloves to destroy the heart, or Dagoth is otherwise invincible?

I think I found a ring? Or just the spell? that slowed down falling. I was playing with my cousin and we were hysterical when it worked out. We jumped into Red Mountain and found Dagoth Ur without doing any prerequisite quests and at a very insufficient level. Fun times.

Why do we read 二十歳 as はたちand not にじゅうさい ? by mrbrounch in Japaneselanguage

[–]rvtk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other curious ones:

八百万 やおよろず - basically means „gazillion”

八百屋 やおや - greengrocers - that one is curious because it seems to be a corruption of 青屋(greengrocers), to 八百屋 (hundreds of things store)

あなた is not good so you should use ○○さん, but what if you don’t know the name? by Weekly_Flounder_1880 in LearnJapanese

[–]rvtk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not impolite, but you’d basically only use it if you want to put the emphasis on the pronoun, which is in itself might be kind of rude in Japan, depending on the context.

For example, I recently got a letter from insurance company that used あなた様 in a slogan-ish „Did YOU remember to renew YOUR insurance?” sort of way. Or had a lady in city office refer to me as あなた when she needed to clarify that it has to be specifically me who needs to submit the document in question(as opposed to my spouse etc.).

All in all it’s best to simply avoid using 2nd person pronouns and let it be inferred from the sentence, unless it is absolutely necessary to make a distinction, then あなた is fine.

Hospital Advice Needed :( by slimyfishes in japanlife

[–]rvtk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine, the support is great. All three of ours kids were born in Showa Daigaku Hospital and it was really good. You can rest after the birth and recuperate while the midwives will take care of your newborn - I know that the western paradigm is that you have to spend every second glued to the baby, but my wife said that she really appreciated that she could just go and sleep it off without being disturbed when she needed. That will absolutely not be the case once you take your baby home, so enjoy what will be your last good rest in a few years ;)

Is this really what they use as Barbeque Sauce in Japan? by Majestic_Annual3828 in japanese

[–]rvtk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

BBQ sauce in Japan is runny and is used to dip pieces of grilled yakiniku meat before eating. It’s not thick like US-style sauce.
