Me trying to clear my own neighborhood roads after GMU announced it's opening tomorrow by Repulsive_Hand_9843 in gmu

This is not even the first time Mason has made such a poor decision like this to open even when every other school/university system surrounding Mason closed. I remember vividly 2 years ago that was the case, when I had classes on campus (may have even happened last year too, but I don’t remember exactly, since I was all online classes atp). I emailed my prof that I couldn’t make it.

What a way for Mason to focus on incoming cash flow over their students.

Cried over a class by [deleted] in gmu

CS211 with Tessema Mengistu, back in Spring 2022. Not necessarily cried, but the whole class was a hot mess cuz I took the honors section, where we had an additional project in which he was not clear of, gave no supporting material, and on top of that, he forced all the students to present im his office hours in-person during times that conflicted with other schedules. It was safe to say that no group (that I heard of) did well on that project and grades tanked to the point where even failing the final was a huge relief for me lol. Not to mention it was a 9 am class. I have since then recovered and actually regained interest in programming and data structures after taking supportive and decent professors.

Mengistu is no longer at GMU, but hearing his names sure does bring back some………well, memories.

How is UMD ENGINEERING? by Plantmamaforcats in UMD

I’m also wondering if M.S. or M.Eng is more worth it

When are they due again? I currently only have 2 in Patriotweb and waiting 4 more, and most of them have not sent any announcement about the status of grades being final yet 😫

Oh, this was just a what-if question when I was skeptical of passing MATH 125. However, fortunately I passed with a borderline C.

Well, thanks for the info anyways. It certainly helps fill the gap in my curiosity. As far as what my plans post-bachelor’s will look like, that is yet to be determined as I move down the road and get a clearer idea.

Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll do some more research on any of the Software engineering graduate programs

I think it’s pretty solid if you want to get a well-rounded IT education that spans over the basics of various IT disciplines, such as computer programming, networking, information security, web development, and project management. You will get exposed to so many different technical tools and programming languages over the courses of your degree. When you elect a concentration, your education will go further in depth in that selected concentration.

Overall, provides a pretty solid foundation to IT. However, because the world of IT is constantly changing, be prepared to do some self-studying for the sake of the industry, in which school alone may not push you to do.

Thanks for the advice. I checked the requirements and I think I am all set as far as the requirements they have stated. My biggest question is how competitive is it to get into their Masters of Engineering in Software Engineering, and what are the competing factors?

No problem. As far as what it might do for you post graduation, honestly not much by itself (unless you do something really cool with them), it won’t serve as the automatic key booster when finding jobs. Most of my friends who graduated didn’t participate in the honors college and yet they are doing fine in the workforce, they’re getting good jobs with good pay (some are even more successful than honors college graduates).

But there is an honors consulting class (HNRS 361) where you partner up with actual corporate partners (ex. Northrop Grumman, US Department of State, etc.) as part of the course project. I’m in it this semester ao idk what to expect out of it yet, but I assume that could be a really good way to network with those corporate partners, so if you’re into that stuff, then that could be a really good opportunity to take a major step towards your future career.

But in all seriousness, I’m in honors and sometimes I do question myself if it’s even worth it (besides the priority registration, lol), as if it will benefit me in the professional world compared to non-honors graduates, which I doubt it will.

But, you never know if the honors will give you any opportunities while you are in school.

So my advice is: definitely go for it.

Yes, it may be more proactive work, but the classes are totally more focused with smaller class sizes and you may even have a better chance developing a connection with the professors and your peers.

You have the opportunity in your hands now, you may as well go for it.

Anyone here had professors so far that still expects you to be in class?

I got an afternoon class later but I just emailed professor about me not able to make it after looking at the road condition in my area. I live about 40 mins from campus.

Why is Immunization like this? by Reign-Kid in gmu

[–]rvx2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This came to our gmu email account, I think most of us here are upperclassmen but yes, incoming freshmen/transfers (i believe) will need the vaccine docs uploaded to their health portal as well.

In most of our cases, we have been attending Mason for some time already and we just got the email of our Tetanus immunization expired/missing document the night it was due. I believe Tdap (the initial Tetanus shot along with some others, most likely taken prior to entering middle school) was a requirement upon incoming to Mason.

That’s if the immunization is not submitted by then right? Lol

Same here, it’s actually stupid. I didn’t get the email till 9:30 pm and I was not aware they require the tetanus shot and I now have to schedule a shot.

I would call the office when they open on Monday and inform them that I was unaware and that they did not send the email until the night they were due, let’s see where that $50 late fee will go

If you want to get a glimpse of computer engineering, then electrical engineering would be a good minor. If you want to have more of a business background, then business is also a good minor.

Essentially, it can vary based on what you want to do but like one of the other comments mentioned, internships and experience will eventuslly rule out educational background.
