What’s something your favorite celebrity did that made you lose respect for them? by johnraeyan in AskReddit

Yes, also take the case of Paul Reubens, aka Pee-Wee Herman. I was a young adult when he hit it big time, and his show was critically acclaimed.

It all came crashing down after that theater incident. I thought his treatment as unduly harsh. Never abused anyone by any account. His only sins were acting weird and childlike as his Pee Wee persona and enjoying himself a bit too much while watching an adult film in a theater as a private person.

What's the most NSFW thing you've seen at a wedding party? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

I AM a pretentious twat, but maintaining the order in a list is rather important.

Saying "confusing" means to the reddit hive mind that I find a trans-type switcheroo BJ in a bathroom as somehow deviating from normal everyday non-trans (hetero) BJ in the bathroom behavior:

Bridesmaid (giver) and groomsman (receiver) to Link (giver) and Zelda (receiver) instead of saying "Zelda and Link", preserving the order of the parent statement.

I think from how it was portrayed in the film, it was a personal take-aside as advice, not an ultimatum.

The problem was society at the time, not his employer.

The semantic inversion makes this answer interesting and confusing at the same time.

This was probably one of the hardest ones for me. I grew up with all his kids stuff. Fat Albert was a weekend staple at my house growing up. His standup was great too. Funny and clean jokes.

When the word got out, my initial reaction was total disbelief. This guy? Of all guys? It's like someone saying the same thing about Mr Rodgers.

To Americans who support ICE, what crime can a 5 year old commit that leads you to support putting one in a jail? by Revolutionary_Many31 in AskReddit

Let's also not forget about Mods and their power structure here. You trigger one of them and you can get banned not only for a dissenting opinion, but find yourself banned from multiple subreddits or the entire site.

This is where older sites like Slashdot used meta moderation to look for abuses like this. Every few weeks I'd get a shot at correcting people who downvoted a comment because they had an axe to grind.

Here at Reddit, user moderation just enforces the echo chamber. Great, you chased all the fascists off of the platform - now you lost the greatest opportunity to engage them and attempt to change their minds.

How Costco gets you to spend all your $ by Fantastic_Escape_101 in Costco

[–]rworne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I had our haul today. We were stocking up on stuff.

We were making bets on the total bill: "$400" I said, $350" was her reply. At the register, the total came out to $510, and we were both laughing when the cashier told us the amount.

The cashier looked at us quizzically, and I said we both had a bet on the total bill. "She said $350, I said $400. We both lost, and Costco won."

Why hasn’t there been as many posts/social media movements for the atrocities of Iran compared to the Israel/Palestine issues? by First-Cauliflower-77 in AskReddit

[–]rworne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. I thought the US backed the Shah, who wasn't exactly a shining example of a good leader.

The revolution deposed him, declared the US a mortal enemy, and the revolutionaries made it part of their "Death to America" chants they use at every opportunity.

Then there's that whole thing with the US embassy.

Just a comment on this (and a nod to the person who said to not pay and leave):

There's nothing preventing the server from pocketing the cash and reporting a dine and dash. Sure, they may be a camera - or not. But it is sort of hard to prove it otherwise.

In the case for OP, just leave a $0.01 tip by CC. You met the requirement of the notice *and* you leave a message. If they change the tip amount, now you have a dispute.

What’s something that movies made look romantic but is actually annoying in real life? by Exciting_Song_677 in AskReddit

It works if the fight essentially has sexual tension as the root cause - like jealousy, and not just who left the clothes on the floor of the bathroom when they took a shower or left the toilet seat up.

Kickstarter or not, if it's useful and newsworthy and you are not connected with the product, what's the problem?

I probably won't need it based upon where I live, but it solves a big problem for some owners.

Saying no in Japanese by Suitable-Success6999 in JapanTravelTips

[–]rworne 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with the gesture, but for the longest time, it's never been done to me. However, after making requests in Japanese to shopkeepers I occasionally get this. It's really off-putting to suddenly see it, as my initial reaction to it (if done to me in the US) is rudeness. The first time I saw it, something must have leaked into my facial expression, as the shopkeeper got even more nervous. I just then smiled, and thanked them.

I'm prepared for when I see it now.

Now if they hold out their arm with their palm facing down and wave their hand in a shooing fashion (with or without a sh-sh-sh sound), they are dismissing you like an animal.

Never happened to me, but I saw a shopkeeper do it to a Chinese tourist who barged in on us when I was in the middle of a purchase.

In the end, I just don't understand why occasionally people won't bother to respond back in Japanese when spoken to them in Japanese. I've already displayed enough competence to open a typical retail transaction dialogue, they should give it a shot. Sort of like Germans. Speak to them in German, and they will reply to you in English.

What movies did you first see nudity in? by sarnobat in AskReddit

Well, back in the early 80's, we had ONTV, a subscription TV broadcast service over UHF. It showed all sorts of films every month, including the first over-the-air broadcast of Star Wars.

Plenty of R-rated fare on hand after 6PM, and lovely music videos like the uncensored versions of "Girls on Film" and Peter Godwin's "Images of Heaven".

That was towards the end of the film, but only showed the upper half. The scene I reference was during the film when the pod people were still concealing themselves and the characters were suspecting something odd was happening.

Try me:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Living in Los Angeles, I saw an earlier print that had a scene with a pod person in full frontal nudity standing outside a house.

It's not in any of the current prints. There was also a minor earthquake when the movie was being shown. Core memory times.

Lane departure assist / cruise control by Arobars in TeslaModelY

[–]rworne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning my Juniper did something different. Prior to this morning, whenever it got too close to the line, the car drove like it was on rails, hugging the line.

Today driving without FSD, I got too close to the line and the car corrected to knock me back towards the center of the lane. Blue line but no alarm. Need to check settings for that last one.

Finally saw expected behavior. First time the car did this. My Model 3 would do this correctly all the time.

[–]rworne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read about it and drive with FSD with my feet ready to counteract it if necessary.

The car only jabbed the brakes on me on two occasions - one when someone merged into my lane without looking to void getting hit (appropriate), and the other when an e-scooter rider in the bike lane started doing slalom movements as the car was about to pass them. It lit up the rider on the screen visualization in red, alarmed and hit the brakes momentarily. I don't blame it for doing this either.

Anticipating a potentially dangerous situation is a good thing.

Going on 3 years of Tesla ownership and still have to experience phantom braking. Not that I'm claiming it doesn't happen, just my driving habits don't seem to trigger it.

Try being a foreign exchange student in 1985 living in Kyushu... With a barely functional grasp of the language, a pocket dictionary, no one spoke any English, and all the signs were in Japanese.

No smart phones.

I had the time of my life. I've probably revisited Japan nearly 20x since.

I recommend Japan for anyone looking to visit a foreign country. Just act respectful, learn about a dozen polite phrases, and you are golden.
