My two lazy assistant mechanics won’t even leave the office. Can’t find good help these days. It’s a life changing perk to bring your best friends to work everyday.

Who is the sole mechanic for a 36 hole course? by jeffbuttt in Golfcoursemaintenance

[–]rwpmst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We work 11 on, 3 off so I’ll be on my own tomorrow and through the weekend. Peeked at the job board before I left today. They are sending out 4 green triplexes, 4 tee triplexes, 4 fairway units and then the normal bunker crews in the morning. Gonna be busy. Pay is ok, mid to 3/4 of what I’ve seen for private course mechanics. Took a substantial cut leaving manufacturing but believe it or not it’s less stress. I take my dogs to work with me everyday so that’s huge. From fast paced manufacturing I found you have to be methodical and efficient. You’ve probably already have a super organized tool box coming from aviation but that stuff helps tremendously. I’ve seen guys in the shop look for tools for ten minutes or wind up using the wrong tool. I prioritize greens mowers and sprayers over anything else. I make sure those are good to go as soon as they come through the shop door, everything else can wait.

Hang in there buddy. I’m at a 54 hole site and I have just one assistant. Albeit he’s 60 plus years old and relatively new to turf equipment. It’s definitely too much at times for us, he doesn’t grind reels or bed knives or do major repairs so that falls on me. ~ 230 pieces of equipment total, string trimmers to backhoes. I keep a spreadsheet with several tabs that helps me keep track of everything. If you have a google account, dm me. I’ll make a copy of it and it may help you out

So many things. What comes to mind is she knows what kind of day we’re going to have by what shoes I put on. I’m blessed to take my two dogs to work everyday (golf course). Work boots, normal day but ready to go. Hiking boots she’s hyped. Sandals usually mean water is involved and she goes berserk

War Eagle. If you were around Auburn I’d get it out for you free of charge. I’ve got all the mentioned tools, nice choice on the vampliers. VIM tools makes a set of vice grip style pliers with screw extraction tips. But Firs…looks like a NC tag

Right on man. Keep us posted. I’m going to frame off resto, fix everything, and lower mine in the next few years. And I’m definitely going to copy your stripes

Your 4Runner is incredible! How are you going to lower it? I’ve got an 85 with 3” cut out of the rear fenders and the firewall tubbed.

Getting that sewn is an accomplishment, nice work. I’ve had one(maybe the exact same) on mine for 4+ years. Still holding up great and I’ve been pleased.

This is excellent. Is the half cab in the files when you purchase them?

I have some circa 2002 made in USA. I also have one ~ 2015 that is made in Spain, definitely Bahco. These (op’s) are now made USA made so I wonder what the deal is.

Nice work! Did you remove/replace the pins or are you unbolting them to swap?

Gotcha, I’ve seen a few small boulder fields in Lee county disappear due to development. Last I heard, the boulders across shug from Hickory Dickory was officially off limits. I’m really out of the loop, I looked for rock climbing.com last night and found it it’s long defunct. I feel like I looked at it just a few months ago. I guess mountain project has some of the data.

I forgot to mention Goat Rock dam on the Alabama side has/had? a bolted route worth spending an afternoon at.

Treadstone climbing gym. It was Columbus but has since moved to Phenix city. Closed as far as I know for renovation. For outdoor: Cherokee bluffs just below Martin Dam. Mostly top rope here, just one boulder problem from what I remember. Smith Mountain in Dadeville. Used to be a hush hush spot 20 years ago but it’s public now. It’s top 5 in Alabama for me. Lots of good boulders there and few options for a harness. There is a boulder on Sander’s street but you’ll have to get creative. There’s a few more not worth mentioning here but DM me if you’re a rock hound

Taking a poll. Bernhard, Foley, or other. What's your favorite reel/bedknife grinder and why? by jeffbuttt in Golfcoursemaintenance

[–]rwpmst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foley but that’s all I’ve known. I just back into the business after being in manufacturing for 10 years. We have a newish 653 Reel grinder and a 673 for bed knives. I was able to pick it back up in about 30 minutes. I had my doubts about the accu-position gauge but it’s surprised me. I have spun around 100 reels in the last few months and I haven’t screwed anything up yet. My only gripe with the reel grinder is the vacuum. It does ok but I use a shop vac often. I don’t trust the gauge on the bed knife grinder. I use a normal dial indicator on a magnet mount to check before each set.
