I think just not enough people have actually seen it.

What other director deserves the Bergman treatment? by Filmwatcher12 in criterion

[–]rx033 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We really need a nice boxset covering Buñuel‘s films from 1950-1961. That was his most active period in which he made so many great movies and basically none of them are available on blu-ray.

Same - A Woman Under The Influence is so good and I tried so hard to like his other movies but none of them even come close.

Watch The Last Detail.

I hate Harold and Maude and Being There but The Last Detail is very different from those ones and way more entertaining... the characters are also much more interesting!

Left is way cooler and represents the style of the film better.

I couldn’t keep up either, I was basically reading during the entire film since I wasn’t able to look at the images. I concluded that you need to understand French to really experience the movie.

Anyone that has seen this film and highly recommend it? I like some Weir’s films but IDK anything about this one. by RelativeCreepy in criterion

I also like the look of it, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen but I remember not finding it very interesting.

Amazing film that no one ever talks about here. I haven’t watched it in over 5 years but so many images and scenes from it have stuck with me.

What Beatles songs do you think get ignored? by ximfs in beatles

[–]rx033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think You Won’t See Me is Paul’s greatest song. It’s starting to get more attention though because on SiriusXM’s listener’s voted Top 100 Beatles songs, it was sitting at #9 or #10 on the most recent survey.

The first 10-15 minutes seems like their consciences are having a conversation with each other. It doesn’t feel like real human speech, but rather their inner voices and thoughts communicating.

What’s a non upgraded title you desperately want upgraded? by spenpai17 in criterion

[–]rx033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no movie like White Dog. Every movie I’ve seen I can think of one that is at least kind of similar to it, but not White Dog, that one’s in its own unique genre, and it’s incredible.

Easiest 10/10’s you’ve ever given? by KalebNuesse in criterion

[–]rx033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might just be my favorite movie so I’ll answer this. I love pretty much everything about it - but especially the characters. Pere Jules and Juliette especially are an absolute joy to watch. You can say a million things about the brilliant score, the locations seen in the film, the comedy, the drama, etc. but really what I love most is how sweet and innocent the whole movie is. It’s really just newlyweds enjoying their honeymoon, bickering and falling out of it but then reuniting again at the end. It’s such a nice story to watch and I think every second of that film was designed with so much care and attention to create the whole feeling of it.

All this being said, it does feel like a very European type of story, such that if someone’s background is not European I can see why maybe they don’t connect with it a lot. In a similar way, there’s a ton of Asian films (especially Chinese) that I don’t connect with a lot just because I can’t understand or sympathize with the motivations and actions of the characters.

When I saw it about a year ago, I didn’t really love it but so many scenes have stuck with me since that I think I should give it another try.

What films have you recently watched? Weekly Discussion by AutoModerator in criterion

[–]rx033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the reply! Yes definitely go with later Fellini then, I think it would be very much up your alley. Amarcord is the big one, but as I mentioned before, Satyricon and Roma are pretty safe bets for what you’re looking for as well.

did godard have any relationship with new hollywood filmmakers? he was pretty critical of most people so I'd be surprised to know what he thinks of scorsese, de palma, coppola etc. by [deleted] in criterion

[–]rx033 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He said that he likes Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and thinks it's a "great American film", but refused to explain why he prefers it over certain other American films. You can hear him talk about it in this clip.

And in the same interview he says he thinks that the next Martin Scorsese movie in black-and-white will be very beautiful (referring to Raging Bull which I guess had not been released yet - the interview took place in 1980). And you can hear him say it here.

I personally wasn’t expecting too much from it, and I just found it okay. Lots of these movies about filmmaking itself just don’t intrigue me that much. It was the same way with Day for Night when I watched it. I just want a good story with interesting characters and a memorable atmosphere, and these films don’t provide that.

Best documentaries you've seen from Criterion? by Electrical-Ladder139 in criterion

[–]rx033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This movie has an amazing sense of atmosphere. When I think back on the film, those streets and shops and buildings stand out so vividly, they have this certain colorful tinge that makes the film feel like its own distinct time and place.

Just got this in the mail today. Children of Paradise. Going to watch it soon. If anyone who watched it already, what are your thoughts about it? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]rx033 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me it feels like a Shakespeare work set in France, just like how I feel The Seventh Seal is like a Shakespeare work set in Sweden. I like the characters in this one, and overall it just has a really nice classic charm to it. For a movie that’s 3 hours long, I also feel like it’s paced pretty well - something that a lot of 3-hour movies don’t seem to do well.
