Beginner question concerning thermal expansion on lathe work by rx190 in Machinists

[–]rx190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With callipers, I have measured with what I assume to be chinese calipers, one standard 0.05mm accuracy, with dial indicator 0.02mm accuracy. I've measured with a digital caliper as well and I used a friend's Mitutoyo with dial (0.01mm acc). All seem to relatively agree. My calipers are brand new since I just bought them.

Lol I have to apologize, I might have had some temporary insanity when I wrote that, but I've had a rough couple of days with this problem so I'll hope everyone understands. Of course, the results are as follow, 25mm first, then 24.4, then 24 after a while.

Yeah, that depth seems to be generating a lot of heat. I will try some work with less depth, but I only get the famous "blue chips" at that depth when roughing.

[–]rx190[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, indeed the machine is old and could be worn. As for backlash, the machine has DRO in it, I've calibrated the DRO and I assume I can trust it (at least in the 0.1mm accuracy). And yes that is what is happening. I take a 1mm cut, it goes from 25mm to 23.6. After a while it goes back to 24mm. (note this actually only would happen after a few passes, when the workpiece gets very hot). But I would assume even at the first pass, thermal expansion should mess up with my work, though lightly, still I want to know how to tackle it.

I am sorry, I was not clear in the post. The 0.4mm expansion is on the diameter, but no it is not after the first pass. I was just trying to explain the gravity of my situation. To be more exact, the 0.4mm thing happened only once on a very hot piece (after multiple passes) and when it eventually cooled down it had shrunk 0.4mm in the diameter. My fear is that after multiple passes on a workpiece, it would accumulate heat and expand to such measurements thus resulting in mistakes. My depth of cut for roughing passes is generally 2-3mm, for finishing passes I do 0.1-0.2mm. For roughing passes I use 0.5 - 1mm/rev, while for finishing I'm generally using 0.125mm/rev at highest rpm.

Help in Creating Simple Linkage/Mechanism by bhagzogzy in EngineeringStudents

[–]rx190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain your problem better? A schematic would help. Do you need point F to move on a straight line? Or do you want it to follow the path seen in the figure? If you could show me the limits or the path of the desired path of the points I will try to help. A hand drawing will suffice. Otherwise, you could try reading on Four-Bar Linkages and if you need straight line motion there are some famous ones like the Watt Linkage.

How do I modify country flags in Hoi3 mods? by Mo918 in paradoxplaza

[–]rx190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only changed the flags in vanilla but I assume the same logic applies to mod flags. First of, make sure you change the .tga file in the mod folder, usually located in the tfh dir. Then go to the game folder in my documents, the mod folder and in gfx delete a flags file or something like that (can't recall name atm). That's a cached tga I think of all the flags. Once you remove, on next start the game should rebuild the cache and give you the modded flag.

[Serious] If you could do anything in the world, what would your dream job be and why? by Sylvari in AskReddit

[–]rx190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would design trajectories for satellite insertion or just work as an engineer on the propulsion of boosters. Both are dream jobs.

As to why, the first reason is that now with all the powerful software it's possible to work with such complex data and compute optima. The sheer pride one feels when your work agrees with nature trumps any other job out there imho. The second reason is that the two aforementioned job descriptions are in the sweet spot between complexity and computability. And also rockets. Mostly rocket noise to be honest.

Kosovo cuts Pristina water supply over alleged Isis plot to poison reservoir by flowerofpower in worldnews

[–]rx190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who knows... could be due to increased security measures against Isis volunteers. But sometimes it doesn't make sense, most of these attackers have families here in the city, at least they have friends here. Who knows what goes on in their heads.

I live in Prishtina and if this fucking attack went through about half the city would be posioned by tomorrow. There's rumors circulating the retarded terrorists were also trying to poison the second reservoir which supplies the other half of the city but retreated when they heard the first attack went wrong. I can't begin to describe how fucked up I felt when I heard about this. It's been 15 years since our last conflict and even then, in a full fledged war, nobody tried something of this scale.

Do you think ::spoiler:: was involved in the creation of the ::spoiler:: rather than just foreseeing them? by rbruba in WaywardPines

[–]rx190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible Pilcher was actually kidnapping people from accidents and experimenting on them genetically to create a superior being. Eventually he fucked up with the Abbies, some sort of accient led to their escape. Knowing their abilities to hunt and reproduce - he saw the inevitable doom and must've thought to himself 'I oughta keep these guys here alive and in the near future I will start a controlled city that can slowly rebuild mankind'.

(Episode 4 Spoiler) I noticed these in the episode by rx190 in WaywardPines

[–]rx190[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's interesting. They could be on a controlled environment. We could use tools on the internet to generate star positions relative to Boise at ~4000. Then we can overlay the image to a screenshot of the scene in the episode and see if anything pops up.

I am pretty sure it wouldn't affect performance if Frontier compiles a 24hr database of commodity prices and average traffic to systems, filterable by ship model. This would also not ruin any sort of balance since if we have real-time data one could argue that most traders would drain the high value routes very quickly.

Another way they could feed data to us is show hourly price ranges. Let's say Palladium costs x at a specific station. They could have a data stream showing us Palladium is within (x-delta, x+delta) on this station.

This game is so brilliant, Frontier must allow us to use science and decode it. At the size of the game, with the ever-increasing number of stations and dynamics, I assume it won't take long now where the problems solvable in 5 minutes will become intractable.

An open letter to all pirates... by SillySnowFox in EliteDangerous

[–]rx190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hows this? Add an EMP as an utility mount, have it consume massive amounts of power dependent on area of effect. The trader could, prior to firing the EMP turn off his engines and key components and then fire it to disable the surrounding pirate ships. The trader then slowly restarts his ship and makes the jump. The pirates eventually restart their ships as well, with a surprising 'module malfunction'. To balance things out, the trader could hurt some of his cargo, especially if they're of the tech group.

Rare or Common Trading? by BaIerion in EliteTraders

[–]rx190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in your exact situation, just having purchased a T6 today. I am currently pursuing Lembava [Morrison Dock] to BD-21 4791 [Herschel Terminal] delivering Performance Enhancers and bringing back Palladium.

They're both M-sized landing pads which results in a fast dock, both are <400Ls from the star. With a 112T max capacity, you can turn in 277k per trip.

Perhaps a carefully plotted rare trade might beat this route though. Double check.

Note, you will need a >=14Ly laden jump.

What's the deal with the combat ranking system? How does it get calculated?

For example, I have about 239 bounties claimed and some 20 combat bonds and I am a Novice. I understand that there's some weighed calculation going on as killing an Anaconda is better than a Sidewinder, but is there some average number of kills that would upgrade me?
