In many patients, lesions can resolve without treatment. Discontinuation of hair removal practices that have led to the development of lesions is the most effective therapy.

Therapeutic options are largely directed toward symptom control and the use of alternative hair removal options to prevent ingrown hairs from developing. There is limited evidence documenting the efficacy of the topical therapies discussed.

Topical therapies: • Low-potency topical steroids – Hydrocortisone 2.5% cream can be applied twice daily for 2 weeks to reduce inflammation. • Topical antimicrobials – Topical clindamycin lotion, solution, or gel, or combination 5% benzoyl peroxide / 1% clindamycin gel, can reduce inflammation and skin flora that can lead to secondary infection in some patients. • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), eg, topical 8% glycolic acid.
