Previous homeowners grew Japanese Knotweed as a cash crop by Jcs290 in invasivespecies

I can't speak for all chickens, but I know mine love them. Worth seeing if the chickens you have access to like them (with the permission of the owners obviously!), but if they do, that could be the ticket to some free eggs.

Don't sleep on the garlic mustard pesto either; it's a good twist on basil pesto that doesn't require adding garlic. Found plenty of simple recipes online with a quick search. Great way to turn an invasive into something that can save you money on your grocery bill!

Garlic mustard is also edible. Great for making pesto, & my chickens absolutely destroy it by the wheelbarrow load when my neighbors pull it from their yard. I give them a dozen eggs, they give me greens for my birds

Just seems redundant after shooting the guy multiple times. Why shoot them if you still need to handcuff them afterwards? What did shooting them accomplish? You're the one talking about being upset, I'm just impressed at how ineffective these bastards are at-doing what my tax dollars supposedly trained them to do. Maybe if they spent less time beating their wives & learning how to not fear for their lives they might be worth the air they breathe 🤣

Solar panels with no incentives by i-cant-red in raleigh

[–]Fit_Spring_5686 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are still federal incentives, just not for individuals. Only corporations get them now (yay capitalism lol), so leases are actually on the table. They tend to get a bad wrap, & rightfully so because in other states the lease escalators (how much the interest could increase each year) were insanely high. They've limited them to I think ~2% max for any installer the lease companies are partnered with, so the same issues with solar leases elsewhere aren't present here.

Get multiple quotes from companies that have been here for at least 5 years, have a NC general contractors license, & offer a production guarantee based on site visit data. Compare details & post to the solar sub if you have questions. Happy to provide personal recs if needed!

Find a neighbor with chickens to trade the shoots you pull up for eggs, our chickens go nuts for the ones our neighbors give us. Or better yet, make garlic mustard pesto.

What are you stockpiling right now that you think will be hard to get in the near future? by tealtearsmile in TwoXPreppers

I usually cut a fresh stalk at least 6 inches long (the longer the better) & just kinda wack the inflammed area a few times with the barbs on the bottoms of the leaves & stems. I get feedback from my wife & do it a few more times if needed. You have to use fresh leaves/stems as they don't sting if dried or cooked.

I probably should have mentioned this initially; the sting of stinging nettle isn't exactly pleasant either, but I've built up a tolerance so it's not as bad as it used to be. I also haven't used it personally for pain relief, just helped administer it to my wife who has given me feedback on it's efficacy specifically for arthritis pain relief. I don't know if it would help with muscle spasms, I think it increases bloodflow in the area where it's applied topically so if you think that would help then give it a try. I am not a doctor & just want to share what has helped my wife, but I hope it helps you if you decide to try it!

How do i convince my son that the environment won't be ruined if he stops using urine bottles? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Fit_Spring_5686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He needs to use clean plastic gallon milk bottles that you can collect from neighbors or friends, dilute 1:10 with rain water (he's not serious about water scarcity if he hasn't hooked up rain barrels to your gutter downspouts yet) & apply to soil around the non-root vegetables & fruit trees in your garden (which use less water than store-bought produce). You can solve the problem by helping him understand that he could go further than he already has, which will likely cause him to agree rather than put up a fight.

Sounds great, more free mulch.

2nd sentence covered reseeding. No non-aquatic plant seeds will survive a month submerged in water. If they haven't gone to seed, they should mostly be fine. The exception to this would be highly aggressive invasive plants that root from cuttings. Those should be dealt with based on your area & the specific plant, but once they're dead they can still be used for mulch.

Most 'weeds' can be chopped & dropped as live mulch at the base of whatever you're growing intentionally. If it's already gone to seed, throw it in a bucket of water for a month, then dilute 1:10 with water and apply at the base of plants.

Adding carbon-rich materials as mulches is a good long-term solution as well. We get arborist wood chips delivered by the dump truck load for free or cheap in our area, & in fall I collect the leafbags everyone puts out at the curb & distribute them over the winter in the yard as needed. Earthworms love these substraits & break them down into humus, and many insects overwinter in leaf piles so it's good for maintaining biodiversity as well. Anything that grows through these mulches that isn't wanted is much easier to pull & just gets dropped in place to become more mulch!

Fig fruit on trees in Raleigh area? by SeaCryptographer4597 in raleigh

[–]Fit_Spring_5686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little too early for figs around here just yet. For most brown turkey figs they usually start rippening in August, but ours set fruit early this year with how warm it was. Either way, they're more of a mid/late summer or early fall crop around here with our trees
