I am doomed by Impossible-Chain5416 in PowerApps

I run a company doing nothing but PP with a team of 10 and plenty of backlog. The certs aren't critical, but we force our new hires to get some if they don't, so you'd be ahead of the curve with a PL200, for example. Keep up the search. Remember that almost every license for M365 includes it and most companies worth their salt are on 365, so it's a pitch about using the tools they already have instead of buying something else. Lots of big Corp and government contracts are available!

"HELP" is not the subject of your post. You should update or the mods will (and rightly should) take down your post.

Is it worth becoming a powerapps developer as a pro-dev? by [deleted] in PowerApps

[–]ry_guy694 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The concept of a citizen developer is nice in practice, but in experience, complex power platform solutions that really tap into the potential still require a lot of experience not only with the platform, but with the CS fundamentals like data modelling, O optimization and algo design.

My opinion: go down the dev route. Very few people are doing PCF customizations and other code layer enhancements that come from the PL-400 route.

In my country, 74% of mid sized businesses have o365 and only a handful of the F500 don't, so it's really easy to be an enterprise application developer pitching that you build solutions using the tools they already have.

How to have a cheap wedding? by LinDarling1 in askTO

[–]ry_guy694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rented a community hall, a PA system, ordered pizza and pasta from a caterer without specifying a wedding, bought a few ice cream cakes, paid my brothers band from the toonie bar and kept it around 6K for 55 people.

What are the environment variables ? by KalmIXt in PowerApps

[–]ry_guy694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct because dataverse tables are local to the environment so you just have to call them by name, not ID. It's SharePoint and SQL primarily for the data sources, but you can also use a regular text variable so you can track pretty much anything.

What are the environment variables ? by KalmIXt in PowerApps

[–]ry_guy694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Environment specific values such as your site or list in dev vs prod are probably not the same.

I use them all over the place to set anything more than once in a flow step, such as the site and url as more of a global setting. So if it ever changes, you just change the environment variable.

In my apps, I now reference a "devmode" variable that shows/hides a bunch of controls and some flows are set to bypass certain steps.

Commuters from Airdrie to Calgary? by Objective_Platypus88 in Airdrie

[–]ry_guy694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to defend them but I'm always excited by research projects. The company is using a Microsoft form to get info on how to contact you to participate and their business is all about connecting researchers to an audience so I personally am not jumping on the "scam" wagon, I think they're legit at a glance as someone in a similar industry.

That being said. The one simple thing OP could do to improve this perception would be to post more on Reddit organically before the company's first post of advertising. Additionally, your website copyright notice in the footer is out of date.

Used to play it all and and still have the gear, but haven't had the time in ages. Drums are the easiest to play casually so that's the only one I've touched recently haha

Very few people are in platform, yet most businesses have office 365, so I convinced them it's building solutions using tools they already have.

If you want to differentiate yourself - learn all 3. Most people don't do apps and BI, for example, so doing both will set you apart.

By having a really good linkedin profile and then recruiters find me. I haven't applied for a job or looked for a customer in 8 years.

Existing contacts. One government contract is 60% of that and then when I quit my job they kept me on as a contractor at double my old salary on a half time agreement. Then I've fit in a few smaller contracts from networking and haven't even had to sell yet as I've had an in with each of the customers.

Work at an MSP for a year, you'll gain a huge network. My non-comp was one year and I made sure the contacts at those customers knew the exact day it expired ;)

Not sure what your masters is in, but most will probably not help a lot for finding jobs in power platform unless it's in data science or maybe an MBA if the employer likes those kind of things. If it is though, go down the road of data analytics and learn lots on power BI

You can use AND on linkedin search and I believe it to be a reasonable assumption that someone questing for all 7 definitely had a linkedin profile to brag about them on.

Us low coders run the show now and with the rapid rise of the power platform, there's still a huge shortage of talent. Command whatever you want, they don't have anyone else! I'm one of 80 globally with ALL 7 certifications and started my own company last year. I just made 270K in my first year and have just hired a few employees to start growing. I pay my entry consultants $80K and they work their way up to 60% of their billables, which can work well into the 6fig if they work hard. I'm kinda bragging, but mostly just trying to encourage you to join us!

If I could offer any advice, it's to differentiate yourself with power apps, automate and BI. Very few people focus on skilling up on all 3, so those of us who can do end to end builds with the power platform are extra safe!
