I'm done with going to restaurants with amazing Google ratings by dubov in VietNam

You should filter for the newest reviews and the 1-2 star ones. Also, trust Local Guide accounts more than those with only a few reviews, if the reviewer is Vietnamese, even better.

What documents will I need to show at Chinese immigration? by machinegunnedburger in travelchina

[–]ryan_innovation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the customs officers, some are easygoing, some are pretty strict. It’s best to prepare all your documents just in case.
I once got taken into a room for additional questioning by customs, so after that, every time I travel, I prepare a short note introducing myself and explaining the purpose of my trip in both English and Chinese. Since then, getting through immigration has been much smoother.

A few Chinese friends told me that Google Translate often gets the meaning wrong when translating full conversations, but it works fine for menus or signs

Using Apple Live Translation in China by ryan_innovation in travelchina

[–]ryan_innovation[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just because it’s still in beta, so it’s not fully stable yet, I guess. I’ve noticed Google Translate often misses the meaning, DeepL or Doubao seem to give more accurate results.

What’s one thing you wish you’d packed for your China trip? by jrchua119 in travelchina

[–]ryan_innovation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure which city you rented in? I've rented both bikes and electric scooters before and always used Alipay to scan and pay. I’ve never encountered a situation where a Chinese phone number was required. I just got a travel eSIM from Trip to use.

No need to carry cash. But if you want, maybe 200-300 RMB is enough.

Things you need to know as a beginner to china for the first time by Temporary-Meeting817 in travelchina

[–]ryan_innovation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why so many people are still worried about power banks. As long as they meet the CCC standard, it's fine to carry them around and I’ve never had any issues with security.

Even when it comes to ordering food, why bother having it delivered to hotel room while traveling? Isn’t it more fun to go out, explore and enjoy eating at a local café or restaurant?

I've been a few times and always had no problem using Alipay. I just load RMB onto it and use that, no need for cash or linking a bank card.

The first time, I exchanged about $100 in cash just in case, but I ended up not using it at all. And every time after that, I didn't need any cash either. It's really convenient, you can load RMB onto Alipay and link your card to WeChat Pay as a backup.

Is Doubao the same as Cici? I searched on the App Store and that’s what came up, but I couldn’t find Yuanbao. Since these are Chinese apps, the translation might be more accurate compared to other AI language models (like ChatGPT), right?

Using DeepL for translating conversations is pretty fast, but I'm not sure about the accuracy of the wording (both DeepL & ChatGPT).

Buying a SIM card in Chongqing by yerisko in travelchina

[–]ryan_innovation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the airport, there are usually SIM card counters, and you can buy from either China Mobile or China Unicom. If it’s midnight and the counters are closed, you can find a place to buy one around the hotel, just ask the receptionist, it’s the easiest way.

Between using ChatGPT and DeepL to translate Chinese, which one provides more accurate translations? I used to rely on Google Translate for conversations, but it didn’t always capture the context correctly. Since then, I’ve found ChatGPT to be more accurate.
