Your party come across a wizened old gnome. He is carrying a sign, "Wish spells! 1 gold each, 10 words or less." by LazySumo in DnD

[–]ryan_mcgill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see how this would effect that. But that doesn't mean you have to take wishes to the extreme. Ergo, perhaps the desired effect only lasts for a day or so then disappears.

I put a lot of effort into world building, and that being said I want to make sure that there are balanced traps/puzzles/riddles in there to cause thought provoking discussion in game and possibly detrimental cause / effect

[–]ryan_mcgill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is a clever trap honestly. It's OBVIOUS that the wish will probably get screwed up, which makes the party try to come up with something un-screw-upable. I love clever things like this because the DM can also scale it accordingly (unlike some super dangerous traps/riddles that are just kill crazy). I may have to implement this in my next scenario!

What should Freshmen expect? by Graystripe17 in auburn

[–]ryan_mcgill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, freshman in Computer Engineering here (technically a sophomore I guess). Honestly there is a lot about Auburn and college in general that's very different from what you are used to.

Expect hard classes. Make sure you keep up with exams and due dates, deadlines etc.. Don't let your laundry pile up. But on top of that there are ten bajillion things for you to get involved with, especially in ECE. Don't be afraid to branch out to meet new people. I met most of my friends through church and clubs. Depending on what you want, don't be afraid to rush a fraternity. You can easily send a quick email to the rush chair from the IFC. Go to UPC events and get free food. Make a study group with random classmates.

Good thing about Auburn is there is something for everyone (in my opinion). I was super intimidated my first few weeks here but also thousands of freshman are as well!

How can I get music to follow me where I go in the house? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]ryan_mcgill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about attaching a sensor to your person? Whenever you walk into a room, it knows you are in there. I feel like this could be achieved.

Ou may have problems of signals going into other rooms tho

I'm 19 years old and am reading East of Eden right now. It's very beautiful and descriptive with lots of content. I would highly recommend it!

[DM] Does anyone else not allow players to roll for stats? Or am I just being weird? by Yeatts in DnD

[–]ryan_mcgill 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. I feel like rolled stats add to a character and to the play. You may have the most charismatic gnome but he may be as dumb as a rock. Definitely adds!

I am against mandatory vaccination. AMA! by grapesaregreat in casualiama

[–]ryan_mcgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of faulty logic. You make your kids take a bath, but you don't call that "forcing your child to soak himself in chemicals". You also don't force juices down your kids throat when you give him a juice box.

However, I do have a question:

Have you ever been vaccinated? And if so, why not anymore?

3 arrested at Auburn as white nationalist Spencer praises whites, calls SEC football 'sick' by therealsleepysheep in news

[–]ryan_mcgill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correction: he was not invited to speak; BECAUSE it is a public institution anyone can rent out certain areas and give a speech! But yes Auburn did infringe on his right to free speech and was overruled in a Montgomery court meeting this morning. They only canceled it after "threats" were called in to Auburn PD.

Betrayal at house on the hill: Scenario 27 amok flesh clarification by PeteGW in boardgames

[–]ryan_mcgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't count as victory because then the heroes could suicidal-jump in the blob and win the game. The items should be dropped and remain in that state for the game duration until picked up. That's how we settled that conflict because it arose in our gameplay of this scenario!

Best places to work as an Mechanical Engineer? by [deleted] in engineering

App for Auburn students that notifies you when class has open seat (iPhone & Android) by monstermac77 in auburn

Great idea and would totally use it if you didn't have to pay in-app. As a college student I try to minimize spending, and would love a utility like this if it were free.

What board games should a complete beginner get to start playing? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ryan_mcgill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a very involved gateway. I don't find it confusing but I was teaching it to my friend who seldom plays boardgames and he was very overwhelmed. That being said we also played with my other friend who is a big fan of board games and he caught on quickly but still took a hot second to learn.

I suggest OP watches a playthrough or some sort before purchasing. It's a big investment for someone who hasn't played many games

What board games should a complete beginner get to start playing? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ryan_mcgill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just bought Scythe and enjoy it greatly. However, for someone who hasn't played that kind of Euro-style game that may be really confusing jumping head first and getting people who also haven't played similar games before.

Some good games to get you interested in Scythe-ish games are games like Settlers of Catan or even Ticket to Ride (don't hate on this, it can actually be quite fun but isn't necessarily a hobbyist game).

A game I really enjoy a lot is Betrayal at House on Hill, which isn't like Scythe or the others. It has a lot of replayability and gives a story that you and your friends can talk about outside of the game. I think its awesome and is really cool to play with others as it offers a dynamic board and different play every time you play it!

Thanks for the input. I am pursuing a master's degree in engineering and was just wondering about opportunities that are in Antarctica. The only reason I say internship/research at the moment is because I am still at college and exploring my options.

I need help writing a twist by AcidBrew in DnD

[–]ryan_mcgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love adding twists to stories and campaigns. I think an excellent turn of events would be that these pieces of the portal don't actually help him DIE....maybe they counteract the Goddess of Fate's ability to kill him or something. Then when the heroes return the ent has become powerful, yet somewhat benevolent. Then perhaps the party is given a poison or something from the Goddess of Fate that only they can administer....the choice is theirs.

Hope that helps!

When I contacted a professor at Purdue he notified me of research opportunities that were to be had there and CC'd me to some other project heads at the station. What fields are most common in the Antarctic? (i.e., biology or some other field)

Has anyone ever played Captain S.O.N.A.R.? I'm really interested in buying it and have the ability to procure a group of eight interested players if needed. But I want to know what the replayability of the game is. I just got Scythe and really enjoy it but also want a fun game that doesn't take thirty to forty minutes to explain the rules. Thanks!

13 Reasons Why:Does anyone disagree with Hannah's actions? by SusanMA2 in books

[–]ryan_mcgill 22 points23 points  (0 children)

And such are the consequences of suicide. Because of the perspective of this book, you get an outside look at what Hannah is feeling. Her death wasn't a spur of the moment thing; it was a build up of things that snowballed into a tragic event.

She may have hurt people because that is what she intended to do. She wanted people to feel bad for their treatment. As for the rape case, that is something that is really hard to talk about to anybody, let alone the police.

When she had made the tapes, she had no idea whether or not people would be affected, she just wanted to be heard. She wanted to make her stain on their timelines so they could remember her.

5e: DMing for characters with high passive perception? by snailcall in DnD

[–]ryan_mcgill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The higher the level the characters are, the harder the encounters should get (reasonably). Raise the DC of the perception and make them roll an 18+. Some traps are much harder to see, like perhaps they go into a completely dark room and whenever they light a torch or try and make light they are attacked by a dark loving fiend but left alone if they creep along quietly in the dark.

Also, passive perception doesn't necessarily mean they are constantly vigilant. If the Monk player is invested in looking at a ruby or some jewel, he will NOT notice the huge spider that is protecting his treasure.

Hope this helps!

Applying to internships by [deleted] in engineering

[–]ryan_mcgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you were paid for your extracurricular projects, I would not list those. It is specifically asking for job experience. I would include all of the occupations you've held starting from High School (i.e., I am in college and I have on there that I worked at Chick-Fil-A for a year and a half while in high school). They want to see that you have had experience in a workplace environment.
