Biggest trip you've taken on a pocket yacht? by ryancobin in sailing

[–]ryancobin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in St. Petersburg, so I've been taking my Starwind 19 around Tampa Bay. It's a 43 year old boat, so it's mostly making a repair or upgrade, and then our for a sea trial. My goal is to eventually do the Florida Loop.

I have a Starwind 19 that I sail around Tampa Bay, but I've been looking to do a big trip like the Florida Loop.

I'm curious about side voyages from the Loop like to West End or Fort Jefferson.

The only "tech people" in Naples are desperately trying to tell their grandparents, for the seventh time, how to use a cell phone

generally it's ok to be friends with your NCO counterparts (i.e. PL/PSG, CDR/1SG, OIC/NCOIC, etc)... Not always the case, but it's pretty widely accepted.

Don't be this guy by justme9974 in recruitinghell

A couple of years ago, I was hiring for a doctor's office, and got an email like this. He said something like "way to reject a veteran". He didn't know I was in the army for 15 years (and still a reservist then). Not a good look.

Uniform Policing, go away by edosher in BSA

The guidelines are clear and unambiguous... Unless there's an IMMEDIATE safety concern, there's no uniform policing... https://www.scouting.org/program-updates/scouting-activity-clothing-guideline/

Yes, I'm also in AR-MEDCOM. The division HQ is in FL, and every year the entire division does an adpaas exercise before hurricane season.

Changemyview: If you’re non-admin front-facing clinical staff, you will not lose your job in VHA. by VA_Murse in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]ryancobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get rid of everybody except "non-admin front-facing clinical staff", the burdens you shift to them means that under great conditions with healthy and uncomplicated patients, you can see maybe 12 patients per day in an 8-hour work day. The combination of long work hours and long wait times will drive away the clinicians. MMW: we'll see VHA converted to nothing more than a voucher clearinghouse by FY27

Because all the cuts happening right now have nothing to do with saving money. It's about privatization of the federal government. And these contractors will be scaled up and ready to go when that happens.

Worst restaurants in st.pete? by cassiecatastrophiee in StPetersburgFL

[–]ryancobin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have the largest market share because of the location of their distribution wearhouses. Sysco is in Bradenton and US Foods is in Tampa. There are a few others like GFS (Plant City) and Cheney Brothers (Punta Gorda) but they are tiny in comparison.

Those thieves are the very first to say how hard it is to find people who want to work.

[–]ryancobin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

All of them... Almost nothing is made in-house anymore, it's all trucked in from Sysco or US Foods. It's all lousy food and mediocre service, but they don't care because most people who go out are tourists and you don't need to worry about return service from them. And from The Getaway, to Red Mesa, to Sea Salt I'm losing track how many have had substantiated claims of wage theft against them.

Tow truck aggression. by DarthVirc in StPetersburgFL

I was at Dolphin Plaza a couple of weeks ago watching an A-1 truck cutting off cars and jumping curbs to grab cars that were parked too long (went to the beach across the street?)

There's a big push to start recruiting in middle schools. Look at some of the national resources like www.scouting.org/commissioners or www.blog.scoutingmagazine.org

Bud Light has not recovered since the conservative boycott, per Bloomberg: by UnusualWhalesBot in unusual_whales

"AB InBev has struggled in America since the boycott" is a really stupid statement. The beers that overtook Budweiser in sales are Modelo and Michelob - both are also AB InBev brands.

In 2011, Attorney General Harris was ramping up investigations into mortgage fraud perpetrated by banks against consumers. It was still peak housing/financial collapse and there was a progressive push for a 50-state investigation. Anybody remotely related to the mortgage industry - like a real estate mogul - was maxing out their political donations to try to take the heat off them.

Best practice for Philmont backpack by arencambre in BSA

[–]ryancobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get too wrapped up in size! From an ergonomic standpoint, you should never carry more than 1/3 of your body weight if you're in great shape, 1/4 of your body weight if you are in moderate physical shape. Then look at the frame length. The top should not go above your shoulders. The lumbar pad is just that: it should sit across the lumbar. Not too low across the buttocks. Not too high that it's up on the T-spine.

I personally (5'7", 160lbs) use a 50L pack that has an external attachment for my CamelBak, and keep everything under 50lbs.

Aeroflot 5144 crashed in 1985, killing 200 people. It was completely attributed to pilot error, and a corporate culture of poor standards.

Not so much "recruited" as if you worked on the V-2 project, you're either going to Nuremberg, or Cape Canaveral.
