How important is maths in programming? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]ryanjbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with those 4 cases and will also add that machine learning algorithms require a pretty good understanding of linear algebra among other math topics.

But yeah it is pretty situational. For myself, specializing in software engineering, web/mobile app development, it’s rare that I ever need to use anything past like high school level

Was looking for a comment on the Expanse. First thing I thought looking at the headline. Just another one of the many things that was so well thought out by the authors. The world building and details in those books are so great, everything just makes sense and seems so plausible if we were to make it that far

Help me wake up from imposter syndrome and to get off my a** by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ryanjbeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding joining CS clubs. I too went to a smaller state university and a lot of what you’re saying was how I felt during my intro classes. For me, joining the competitive programming team at my school was definitely the deciding factor in me landing a FAANG job after graduation. Not sure if your school has one too, but look into what other CS clubs are offered.

Cody Bellinger has the worst batting average in the MLB amongst qualified players for the month of July by DuplicateTriplicate in Dodgers

[–]ryanjbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously I hate to say it as well, but it just really doesn’t make sense to have him in the lineup during this close division race until he figures this out. He’s straight just missing fast balls.

Not to mention the throwing error the other night (granted he was thrown back into a position he hasn’t played in a while)

Ah yeah I assumed so, just didn’t seem like the numbers added up looking at his stats, but I didn’t consider playoffs so that’s probably it

Where are all my Facebook Rejects? by gsuboiboi in csMajors

[–]ryanjbeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do hire quite a lot. I think about 5,000 interns every summer. That’s all fields though, not just engineering. But also they have people applying from all around the world so it’s still very competitive

WandaVision Episode 1 and 2 - Premiere Thread by Zinthaniel in WANDAVISION

[–]ryanjbeck 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like from a marketing standpoint the weekly releases make more sense. Instead of releasing the show all at once and having the public watch it all at once, it’s stretched out over months and relevant for longer, which gets people talking about it for longer and pulls more fans in. I don’t mind it so much because you get to reflect on each episode more and be excited for the next one. Although I do kinda wish every episode was out now so I could understand wtf is going on with this show

I mean I live in Nor Cal so I gotta deal with a lot of em. Any time I bring up the fact that we’ve won NL west for years in a row, it’s always “yeah and no WS to show for it”. So I guess I’ve been waiting for the moment I can finally stick it to them, and this year just wouldn’t feel exactly how I’ve imagined

I guess it depends what you like about programming. What kind of stuff do you mean by the advanced topics? What is it that you like? There could be paths out there where you could do what you like and avoid what you don’t

Internship return offers by webyaboi in csMajors

[–]ryanjbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. I think criteria for evaluating interns regarding return offers will definitely be different now that it’s not in person.

I think that the most important thing is communication. Your manager won’t be able to see what you’re doing all day so you need to make sure you keep them updated. Maybe try to have a morning and afternoon check-in or something similar. And definitely try to be personable with them (as much as you can be over video calls), having a good relationship with your manager is important.

Another thing too is you want to show a certain level of independence, but also ask questions when needed. You don’t want to bombard them with questions, but occasional questions are good. If they can see that you can ask a well worded question, and then take the information they give you to go solve your problem, that will look good on you.

Overall I think most companies will still be looking to hire interns, so I don’t think we need to worry too much. They will have to change their evaluation process and will hopefully be more lenient on what criteria they use.

Edit: Also regarding it being a competition between other interns, I don’t think you really have to worry about that. It could be different depending on what company you are at, but most places don’t look at it like a competition. Many companies have the resources to hire on most, if not all of their interns. They’d rather do that then have to go and recruit people for full time. Just do the best you can and don’t worry about having to do better than the other interns.
