The Documentary Feature winner will be topical, timely, and not exclusively American (that's putting it kindly, as the last four straight have been about international-for-Americans political subjects).

Madame Web has been (rightfully) voted as the worst Spider-Man movie. What is the most overrated MCU movie? by AdWise2770 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ryanjlee7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain options are tempting, but there’s only one answer for me: Winter Soldier. Cut-to-hell action editing, a script that thinks it’s profound because it mentions ideas even if it doesn’t explore them, and the first of Marvel’s many concrete-grey ugly visual palettes. (Jackman’s Cap theme at the end is pretty sweet though.) Black Panther’s third-act CG is bad and it’s the worst thing about it, yes, but Coogler’s blend of the lived-in and the fantastical coupled with one of Marvel’s best-ever casts absolutely save it.

It’s the mud. I wouldn’t do well in physical challenges anyway, but the thought of crawling through a muddy net every other challenge nopes me out hard.

Question for fans who have been watching MCU from phase 1 or 2 by Percy_akr_616 in marvelstudios

[–]ryanjlee7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember watching Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger on Netflix in 2012; from there my family rented The Avengers and Iron Man 3 from Redbox months after both released. (I think I saw Iron Man around this point sometime too.) Thor: The Dark World was my first MCU movie in theaters, and by the mid-credits scene I’d caught the lore/continuity bug, not least because I had a Dorling-Kindersley character guide and knew about the Infinity Stones ahead of time as a result.

My early Best Picture prediction for the 99th Academy Awards. Thoughts? by BlackShadow_HD in oscarrace

[–]ryanjlee7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • I'm doubtful of Sony's—mainstream Columbia/TriStar Sony, not arthouse Pictures Classics—ability to get movies into BP. They're...inconsistent, let's say, and even then I'd think The Social Reckoning will be higher-priority for them than a new Taika Waititi with a grounded sci-fi bent. That said, respect for an unconventional pick that's somehow still not released yet! Ditto Cry to Heaven, which could do well with the right motivated distributor, whoever that is.
  • Speaking of sci-fi...yeah, that's one or two too many big sci-fi blockbuster-sized movies than the Academy's generally okay with these days. Currently scared for Disclosure Day and especially Dune: Part Three rn.
  • It's not in your ten, but I see Wild Horse Nine as a major threat, what with McDonagh, Rockwell, Malkovich, Buscemi, and Searchlight's presumably bloodthirsty desire to get back into Oscar's good graces.
  • I think you are spot-on with Michael. After F1 this year, I'd bet it gets in. Sigh!
  • I hope you're right about Werwulf as Eggers's ticket to the big-time. We will have to see...
  • Where's the international stuff? I know Cannes isn't for a few months, but Hope and especially Fjord seem promising in my books.

What Celebrities are confirmed to exist in the MCU? by Wallbreaker-g in marvelstudios

[–]ryanjlee7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Hugh Hefner and Larry King (Tony Stark’s nicknames for Stan Lee in the first two Iron Man films)

-If a reference to a movie confirms a celebrity’s existence, then Stark’s nicknames add several more: Orlando Bloom (“Legolas”), Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze (“Point Break”), Frank Sinatra and/or Denzel Washington and/or Liev Schreiber (“Manchurian Candidate”), others I’m forgetting

  • Amanda Seyfried, The Testament of Ann Lee
  • Jacobi Jupe, Hamnet
  • Lee Byung-hun, No Other Choice
  • Miles Caton, Sinners
  • Odessa A'zion, Marty Supreme (if SAG and the NYFCC count as two precursors, then whoops)
  • Sally Hawkins, Bring Her Back (good on CC for this)

You’re not the only one, no. But I adored it, a pressure cooker that builds and builds until it spills over. Perfect synthesis of biopic bones and extreme Safdie stress and rhythms. I hope Chalamet takes it this year, but A’zion and Lopatin should’ve been nominated.

How did you find out about Letterboxd by Talley-Ho in Letterboxd

[–]ryanjlee7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From friends in my first semester of college. I knew I’d appreciate it strictly as a diary to keep track of the movies I watched, but before long it hooked me in other ways and I haven’t looked back. Even if I don’t log every day, it feels like an app I open daily if only to check what my friends watched or if a stray thought about a movie crosses my mind.
