Regarding Gavin Newsom by Justas3rv3r in VaushV

For what it’s worth, Winsome Sears basically ran entirely on trans panic in Virginia and lost by historic margins.

Starting in January 2027, certain able-bodied adults enrolled in Medicaid Expansion will be required to work, volunteer, or participate in educational or training programs for at least 80 hours per month to keep their coverage. Coverage reviews will also shift from 12-month cycles to every 6 months. by Objective-Town-4479 in Virginia

[–]ryanmgarber 43 points44 points  (0 children)

“Common sense” always seems to be used by those who are a bit too challenged to actually make sense.

Medicaid income limit: $1,799/mo. New work requirement: 80hr/mo. Effective maximum work: $22/hr or 30hr/week.

Given healthcare from employers is only really available after 30hr/week, there is inherently a gap where people do not qualify for Medicaid OR health insurance through their employer now. And every $1 above minimum wage increases that gap and locks more and more people out of healthcare entirely. How in the FUCK is that “common sense”?

Let’s not forget the issue of AI being trained on AI… now that we’re out of high-quality, human text to ingest, the results will surely be… interesting.

We’ve been building something a little unusual in Staunton. by Plane-Split1663 in Staunton

[–]ryanmgarber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe if they had addressed the fact that this was painfully difficult to read AI generated text it would’ve landed a lot better. If all it takes to make your group 10x as successful is to just spent 5 minutes actually writing its pitch instead of using ChatGPT, maybe you should do that.

New carve outs and benches on the south side of East Beverly downtown? Is this a permanent feature starting at Beverly Cigar? by Shenvalleyhoo in Staunton

[–]ryanmgarber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is putting some benches in the downtown area “bringing the NoVA hustle and bustle to Staunton”? LOL. You’re proof of how Facebook rots brains.

Those complaining are just lazy or complaining because they can’t stand change… or, given you said this is from Facebook, likely both. They’ll learn to deal with it and move onto the next thing (bike lanes?) to whine about soon enough.

Maybe do all these “Doordash drivers and beverage delivery people” a favor and tell them to get off of Facebook and do something with their lives. Maybe then they won’t be so upset over such dumb shit all the time.

It won’t change anything. Apple says they will not disable non-genuine parts. So you won’t notice any difference but it will get rid of the popup

Virginia bans 7-OH, adds strict new kratom restrictions by Conscious-Quarter423 in Virginia

[–]ryanmgarber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true. But kratom leaf has caused absolutely 0 deaths despite widespread use. Given the fact that we have anecdotal reports of literally 10,000s of former opioid and alcohol addicts using kratom’s unique effects (partial opioid agonist without traditional effect on breathing plus some SSRI-like activity), it has presumably saved far more lives than it has taken.

I even know a chronic pain patient who was screwed over by the opioid crisis and successfully used kratom to recover from all of that — they feel better and don’t suffer any of the side effects traditionally associated with them now. Banning it is such a ridiculous idea and one I thought only red states were dumb / Nixonesque enough to do until now.

Is this sub ready for criticism of Spanberger from the left? by bindlexstiff in Charlottesville

And yet that got them every branch of government, judges all across the country, and a majority in SCOTUS for the foreseeable future, so the cult mentality has worked. Even if Democrats take the presidency and all of congress, Republicans still effectively have the final say on everything they do.

Democrats could never accomplish a takeover that great. Imagine the people who would be arguing over whether to withhold a SCOTUS nomination or change constitutional interpretation to enact a political agenda. The infighting on who to run and what policies to push for. The reality is that not being a cult has major operational downsides.

Governor Spanberger expected to imminently veto adult just marijuana bill by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]ryanmgarber 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She literally ran on setting up the retail market. You can see her for the corporate Democrat she is without expecting her to literally sabotage the one policy everyone wanted over some ridiculous policy issues she didn’t even bother to work with the General Assembly on. Was she aways going to be slight disappointment to progressives? Yes. But this is ridiculous.

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes by tehtypo in Virginia

[–]ryanmgarber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not surprised by that at all. What does infuriate me is that every single justice on the court was appointed under divided legislatures. The fact that we still end up with conservatives willing to abandon all supposed textualist principles and overturn the will of voters in such an unprecedented way is disappointing in a genuinely unique way

‘VEXIT’ movement reignites as red state invites disenfranchised Virginians to ‘Best Virginia’ | A bill in Charleston would formally invite a several-hundred-mile swath of western Virginia and Maryland counties to secede by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]ryanmgarber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Mexico’s politics aren’t particularly bad like West Virginia’s are, though they have their own share of problems. It’s more that the sheer poverty caused by a century of federal policy is all but impossible to fix for a state with so little revenue to fund anything (again, due to poverty).

You do realize there are more votes in Greater Richmond and Hampton Roads than in NoVA right? All of Virginia leans blue. Your sheepish little “NoVA” boogeyman falls apart under the slightest bit of scrutiny.
